Open Gameday Thread, 9/17

I'm in class for the next, like, seventeen hours. It's a literary theory and criticism class; even though I consider myself a writing major, they still force this stuff on me. I'll be talking about Horace's dedrylical hexameter's impact on tendrilical pentameter, and trying to apply that to Aristotelian theories on small watercraft in dramatic plays of the 1930s, or something.

If I skipped class, I could sit down and watch the Giants flail away against Brandon Webb.

I'm going to go to class and have a better time. Sad, that.

I'm a gonna get a cup of coffee first, though....

Hey Grant, two years ago I wrote a paper on Horace's dedrylical hexameter's impact on tendrilical pentameter. I totally got a B+!

The only difference is that I had to apply mine to the Aristotelian theories on large watercraft in French dramatic plays of the 1950's, but if you want it a litte ctrl+f, replace all should fix those problems right up!

It's nearly time for dinner, and you are getting impatiently hungry. You have three corn dogs in your freezer. Do you:

A. Oven (425 degrees for 20 minutes)
B. Microwave (2:30 on high)
C. Forget the dogs and drink over-filling beers (I'm thinking Guiness here) whilst watching B-Webb miss bats.

Yesterday was option C, but substitute Peavy for Webb. I'd rather not repeat that.

News and Notes

  • Thank God Durham is starting as his quest for a sub .200 BA continues. He's currently at .217
  • Why is Roberts in the lineup? I'd rather see Schierholtz get more ABs.
  • Correia has been solid since his move to the rotation. He boasts a 1.98 ERA this year as a starter in 27.1 IP. He holds a career 2.87 ERA in 15.2 IP against Arizona.
  • Free Scott McClain already!

by xanthan on Sep 17, 2007 6:15 PM PDT reply actions

More useless numbers!
I might have answered my Roberts question.

He's a career .277/.306/.404 hitter against Webb in 51 PAs. Not great but who knows.

Durham is a .310/.326/.571 hitter against Webb in 44 career PAs.

Ouch. Feliz is a career .226/.306/.290 against Webb in 36 career PAs.

You would think, as a manager, knowing you're coming back to manage this team NEXT year, it would be in YOUR best interest to play the Frandsen's, Schierholtz's, Velez's - you, know, to get a look, to get a head start on next year.  Or is it baseball's right of passage that Septemeber call-ups just take in the 'atmosphere' for one whole September?

Why do they insist on bringing Hennessey into ballgames with men on base! He's proven that that's not a strength of his so why, especially when he's low on confidence, keep on putting him in positions to fail!

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 9/17
True, but you've got a bullpen full of other pitchers who are better suited to that position. In his career he's always come in with a clean inning (either starting or setup/closer) It's just annoying that he's getting put in bad positions, which isn't going to help him improve his confidence any!

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 9/17
Your point is well-taken, but is Hennessey a major league pitcher or isn't he?  If you're a major league pitcher, you ought to be able to throw a strike--men on base or not; Angel Her-freaking-nandez or not.

Yeah he is, and i'm not saying he shouldn't still be able to get the job done, he's a relief pitcher after all. It's just annoying to see a pitcher struggling & his manager not helping him at all. Brings back memories of Alou!

Giants have 11 relief pitchers right now, and I would consider only 2 of them (Wilson, Hennessey) to be legitimate major league pitchers. Two more (Kline, Walker) are borderline.  That's seven relievers, many of whom we're seeing on a daily basis, who I don't think belong in a major league baseball game right now.

Angel Hernandez
..so, I'm listening to Jon Miller badmouth the zone, and after all this is Angel Hernandez, so I check the Enhanced Gameday numbers for those last calls.

Here's Walker:
http://gd2.mlb.com/components/game/mlb/year_2007/month_09/day_17/gid_2007_09_17_sfnmlb_arimlb_1/pbp/ pitchers/400104.xml

Here are the called balls:
px="0.338" pz="2.268" [right down the @#%! middle]
px="-0.285" pz="0.800" [low]
px="0.705" pz="2.537" [easy, easy rulebook strike]
px="-0.531" pz="1.736" [rulebook strike, 'low' to some umps]

Has Hernandez been this bad all night?  I mean, I see umps miss a call or two now and then, but that's 3-of-4 "balls" that were actual, rulebook strikes.

That's because the Dbacks are the only team among the [snakes/plodres/hated dodgers] who are almost as bad a team.  The snakes have been very, very lucky this year.  The Plods and, much to my chagrin the Hated Dodgers are much better teams.

Congratulations on the victory, and your hospitality, as always.

And just to set the record straight, Murphy's is 1000x times better than either Guinness or Newcastle. (Guinness Extra Stout is legit, though.)
