I wish deep inner contentment and bliss for Mark Sweeney.  I would desire for him to experience great joy in life as he attains to a lasting inner consciousness, a true spiritual awareness, and the perfect realization of his soul.  All this, while striking out every single at bat, and dropping and throwing away every ball that is hit to him.

By the way, this is a departure from what I wished for Jeff Kent, which was that his body would be covered with festering sores.

We will not find out who either of these players to be named later are until after the season ends.  These PTBNLs can not have been members of the Pirates or Dodgers at the times of these two respective trades and therefore must be minor leaguers that would not clear wiavers and therefore can not be named until the season is over.

The Giants might be an outfielder short with Robert's injury and two infielders down with Sweeney gone and Aurilia out. Velez may be in AA, but he seems like the best fit given his experience in both the infield and outfield.

Re: Sweeney gone
I think one of the most important parts of this trade is that it clears up a spot on the 40 man.  I checked and it's at 40.  It looks to me like Eugenio Velez was added.  Or was he already on the 40 man?  At any rate, I think this helps them protect players come the rule 5 draft as well as give a spot on the 25 man for player evaluation as well as moving someone to the 40 man, who could also be brought up for eval.

notice Jackie Robinson is missing?  if sweeney was a man, he would retire :O)

also I have no hope that the PTBNL is a good prospect but...

"Mark provides us with another experienced bat off the bench and from time to time he may be called on in a starting role," Dodger general manager Ned Colletti said. "He has tremendous makeup and will bring a lot to this club."

...so why wouldn't James Loney get all of these starts??? ... no, I guess I'm dreaming

Re: Sweeney gone
wow. nice list, I totally forgot that Eric Davis was on the Giants.
If Pedro Feliz and Randy Messenger had a kid they could name him Happy Messenger.

My girlfriend is totally jealous of Sweeney's makeup, too.

GREAT eyeliner!

Re: Sweeney gone
Sal Maglie and Juan Marichal are painful entries on that list.

Particularly Maglie because he wasn't cooked like Marichal was. The Indians got him off waivers for gelt and then sold him to Brooklyn, where he preceded to nearly win both the MVP and Cy Young by pitching his ass off as a Sunday starter.

I believe..
That if the PTBNL cannot be decided upon then the deal is cash.

Re: I believe..
Don't they have to agree to a list of players available prior to making deal? Then at a set time SF can make its selection from that list of players available. When I heard "or cash" I suddenly thought maybe the list of players is not as talented as I had hoped for  - hopefully I am wrong.

Re: Sweeney gone
I'm sorry to see Sweeney go, but his skills are more important on a pennant contender, not a last place team. The fact the Giants got anything for him is great. I wish him luck as long as the Dodgers continue to lose.

Re: Sweeney gone
His skills, in fact, are completely and utterly worthless to the Giants.

Which means that by getting back something of worth, we've made out infinitely better than we started!

Re: Sweeney gone
his skills are worthless to the Dodgers as well, because he no longer hits for power. He will hit singles and be stranded on the bases, just like he was here. By the way, the NY Daily News, which employs Bonds haters Mike Lupica and TJ Quinn, had a headline "Giants trade Bonds scapegoat Sweeney." I knew that garbage was coming the second Sweeney left San Francisco. If he had played another 10 years with the Giants and then retired, the News would have said "Giants force Bonds scapegoat to quit."

Re: See ya later Vanilla Ice.
This clip always leaves me in complete awe of the powers of the Ice.

So he spontaneosly Freestyles a choreographed rap (choreographed with multiple dancers, I might add!) to an unfamiliar beat, while a MUTANT NINJA BATTLE has unexpectedly broken out on his dance floor, AND he has the wherewithall to keep the content of said freestyle specific to said battle!

Better men than the Ice have stopped what they were doing to watch mutant ninja battles in awe. Better men, yes, but better DJs? There simply are none.
