Open Gameday Thread, 6/16

When people make fun of Barry Zito, they'll refer to him as "Kirk Rueter with a curveball." That never rang true to me, as Zito has the potential to dominate a game. When Rueter was successful, it wasn't because he was doing anything different; he'd just run into a team that was too aggressive or unwilling to take pitches to the opposite field.

When Zito's successful, it's because he has control for that particular game, and it's making hitters uncomfortable. If you're looking for a big curve, you can't worry too much about a fastball right on the inside corner of the strike zone. If Zito can place that fastball there, he can tear the other team apart.

So, no, Kirk Rueter isn't a good comparison when you want to rip on Barry Zito. The correct answer is Shawn Estes. Ol' 55. The Giants have signed Shawn Estes to a 13,031-year contract. It's going to be a hell of a toboggan ride.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 6/16
I like to think that I'm not one of those knee-jerk fans who call in to talk radio at the first signs of distress. But I'm angry as we appear headed for our third straight losing season, after an offseason of big-spending. Our problems came be summed up with one name: Pedro Feliz. OBP: .287. SLG: 423. We are a team that doesn't walk enough and doesn't hit enough doubles or home runs. Indeed, we are 11th in the NL in OBP (.319) and tied for 11th in SLG.

Of course, our pitching (especially the starting rotation) has been better than expected. Our biggest problem has been Zito, promised by him and Boras (and believed by Sabean) to be one of the best pitchers in baseball. Instead, he is now 6-7 with a 4.41 ERA. Worse, for me, since he is our number one starter, expected to win playoff and World Series games, is his record in his five most important starts this year:

IP     H    R   ER   BB  SO
Opening Day April 3 v Padres            5      4     3    2    2    2  (L)
First return to Oakland May 18           4      6     7    7       7    2  (L)
First time against Mets May  30          7      6     0    0      1     7 (W)
First time against A's at AT&T June 9  4      9     4    3      1    2  (L)
First time for Giants against Red Sox   5.1   5     7    6      4    5  (L)
Totals                                              25.1  30   21   18    15  18  (1-4) ERA 6.45

So how does this add up when deciding whether Sabean should get his contract extended after this year? Especially when you consider the success of the A's every year?

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 6/16
This has got to be the most asinine comment.  You cannot say the ONE player on the Giants is the reason they are doing so badly.  Aurilla has choked alot more times when we needed runs.  In fact, everyone on the team chokes when we need a big play.  To blame one player is childness.  Bonds took 3 straight strikes today, lets blame him.  It's hard being a Giants fan right now, they are not coming through on any level and they look like a AAA team could come in and beat up on them.  But they are a TEAM, and win as a TEAM and lose as a TEAM, and as a fan you either stand behind them, through good and bad or you're not a fan!

I...
am slightly suprised at how Giants fans have given Zito a free pass so far.   I mean his ERA finally reflects his peripherals DESPITE moving to a league where he gets to face the pitcher 5 times a game.

Sign of the apocylapse:  according to FIP (which is better measure of year to year performance than ERA) Zito is actually performaning slightly better this year (4.64) than last year (4.92)

<whew> I sure am glad we gave this man the richest pitching contract in history.

Barry Zito is too likeable and too not-on-the-offense for fans to turn on him so soon no matter how average his performance has been.

If he was unlikeable or if he was a position player, things might be different, but alas.

Re: I...
One positive we can take from Barry Zito's performance this season.  He has pitched rather well against the National League teams, fashioning a very nice 3.25 ERA.

And fortunately for Barry and the Giants, they don't play many more games against the American League.

On the other hand, if one extrapolates Barry's 14 starts this season into the 34 he made last year, we get 221.0 innings pitched last year, 201.0 this season.  We have 211 hits last year, 192 in 2007.  99 walks last year, 100 this season.  151 strikeouts last year, 128 this year.  27 homers last year, 20 this year.

Barry basically has pitched about as well this season as last, probably with a slight edge to 2006. His 4.41 ERA this season is much higher than his 3.83 of last year, but as we said at the time, he was lucky it was that low in 2006.

Barry's 2005 season has been his best of the last four (including this one).  His 3.87 ERA was probably pretty true.  But in the other three (this one partial, of course) seasons, Barry's ERA has averaged a little over 4.20.

For this the Giants paid $126 million?

I was watching the 9th inning of the A's-Cardinals game last night. The Cardinals were getting hammered so badly they brought in Scott Spezio to pitch the last inning.

He threw harder than Zito. No joke.

I'm clinging desparately to the "career post-all star ERA of 3.26." This may be a statistical fluke, and he didn't have a strong second half in 2006, but I have to believe it's going to get better for my own sanity if for nothing else. For the money he's making he should pitch well every month, but oh well.

What bothers me more than anything is how unpleasant his starts have been to watch. Yet another way he's been much more Estes than Rueter.

Moonstruck is on TV right now
I wonder if, even before this year, Zito knew deep down that he's not the ace he used to be. Consequently, he tried to incorporate a new windup in the spring. Maybe we should've let him try it out longer.

by Dan from NM on Jun 16, 2007 11:13 AM PDT reply actions

Re: Moonstruck is on TV right now
Zito hasnt been the ace he used to be in years. Why wouldn't he have tried to change his motion as an A when it became apparent he wasn't Cy Young anymore? Maybe he just wanted to make some noise and somebody else who knows something about motion stopped him and we're all the better for it.

At the very least, he's unlikely to get hurt throwing the way he always has and he's not likely to have the control problems you could expect from somebody completely changing their muscle memory index for the first time in years.

But really, we have no way of knowing. I just don't care for the assumpion that Barry Zito-desperate-to-make-a-change automatically knew better than the guys who fix pitchers for a living.

Barry Zito has been nothing less than what we expected, and as a solid pitcher in a fantastic rotation, any changes he would have mde would have done squat to make this a winning team anyway. His pitching and his mechanics are not the problem.

Sorry, this was a bit of an overreaction to your simple comment, but consider it directed toward the total cumulation of comments that have just supposed that letting Zito do what Zito wants with his arm with no consultation and no consideration for consequence is a good idea. And there have been a lot. And they frustrate.

Would this season be more or less painful if our pitching (starting and relief) were performing more in line with expectations? (that's worse for those tuning in)

I thought Sabes had a hopeless task last off season, and managed to not completely screw us.  Oh, then he signed Zito.  Now maybe it won't, (for example, if average salaries double by 2009), but it's sure is looking ugly now.

I don't like when Durham has batted in the top thre for teh Giants, because I've never seen him do well there while he's been on this team, and Nate batting sixth, ahead of what should be 3 major league bats that should be batting in front of him, is a little disheartening.

I really don't care for that bottom 4. Reminds me a lot of the way I used to feel last year just about every day. A little nausea, a little diarrhea. And both coming back out the front way...

This has been a test of the Emergency Aurilia Praise System. In the event of an actual reason for praising Aurilia, grab a shotgun and head to the basement. Don't open the door for anyone. ANYONE.

SF Giants Pitching
8th best ERA in the majors
Most complete games in the majors

SF Giants Hitting
26th best team batting average
25th best extra base hits

Wish I had the team stat for runners left on base and hits with runners in scoring position

Anyone?

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 6/16
If I remember correctly, the Giants were actually hitting better than expected with runners in scoring position. That's why they aren't in the bottom of MLB in runs scored. I think. Could be wrong.

Wretched, nonetheless.

Its because they are like 23rd in OBP (dead last sans Barry) that they haven't scored much.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 6/16
You can't do that as a player, and I love Cain for the fact that he hasn't been doing that.

I'm sure he thinks it, and tells all his friends and family how he'd rather see Matt Morris at the plate every time Omar Vizquel steps in the box.

But you CAN NOT do it publically. You can't.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 6/16
I'd actually bet that most of the pitchers are okay with Omar's horridness at the plate because at least they can see him saving them runs on defense.  I'm sure they're much more frustrated by the general suckitude of Richie, Ray-Ray (in current slump form), Winn, and Roberts.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 6/16
Having been an advocate for Le 55 before switching to Le Z (common thread: both lefthanded, both people i would the opposite of kick out of bed), I must say that Zito projects himself as much more even-keeled, a blend of arrogance and Zen. Shawnee (as I once called him) blew his top every now and then. It was horrific and spectacular. I still remember October 5, 2001, as the day Estes left the Giants, not for the other thing.

Of course, maybe Barry Z is repressing. I wouldn't mind a good old burst of passion as long as he doesn't get injured doing it.
