Open Gameday Thread, 5/6

`Twas the night before Lincecum, and all through Mays Field
Not a creature was stirring, not even Lou Seal
The pitcher's mound dirt was packed down with care
In preparation for our hero, who would soon be there

The fans were at home, all snug in their beds,
While visions of perfect games danced in their heads
And Lefty with his wit, and Steve S. with his stats
Had just settled down for a nervous spring nap

Then the next night, arose such a clatter
ESPN angled their cameras to see what was the matter
The crowd was gathering down at Third and King
Anticipating the heat our savior would bring

The sun kept fog away for the Sunday night show
And gave the luster of early evening for the field below
When what to our wondering eyes should appear?
But one miniature pitcher, and eight of his peers

With an overpowering fastball, so lively and quick
He then flashed a curveball that would make Phillies sick.
Like a wee Nolan Ryan, his pitches they came
And as he warmed up, he called them by name;

"Now four-seamer, now two-seamer, now changeup, now curve!
On slider, on palmball, on split-finger and slurve!
To the catcher's mitt; to sixty feet, six inches away!
You'll miss those bats, and in the rotation I'll stay!"

As he got loose before a national crowd
The pops from the catcher's mitt grew ever more loud
So to the corners of the strike zone, his pitches they flew
With an arsenal of pitches, St. Timothy threw.

And then, with an announcement, Rollins came up to bat
Adjusting his wristbands, he gave his cleats a pat.
As I grabbed my remote and adjusted my sound,
Lincecum's first-ever pitch was now plateward bound

He was dressed in French vanilla, and his shoes colored black
He had a huge "55" right on his back
An entire franchise perched on his right shoulder
As the once warm night grew ever colder

His eyes - how they focused! His hat bill, so bent!
His delivery was perfect; Bad hitters repent!
His right arm went back and stretched like a bow
And his beard would have been badass, if a beard he could grow

He pumped two by Rollins, and then dropped the hammer
Rollins, caught looking, left with a stammer
Chase Utley ended the inning, waving at a fastball superb
You deserve to be struck out, when your first name's a verb

Tim looked out of place; he looked like he was twelve
And the Phillies laughed when they saw him, in spite of themselves
But Tim spoke not a word, and went straight to his work
And mixed curves up with heaters, whiffing all with a smirk

And after the 27th strikeout, he lifted his cap,
Gave a wink and a nod, acknowledged the cheers and the claps
And I heard him exclaim, as he jogged out of sight
"I won this series right now, but I'll win a World Series some night!"

This was great stuff, Grant.  Tim wore #12 at Fresno.  I like the number 12, since it is a factor of 24.  And I like 14, since that the number of Vida Blue, who won the Cy Young Award as a rookie, didn't he?

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 5/6
OK, I know everybody is going to hate me here - but:

We all talk about potential lasting impact trades for the Giants, and what it could bring us back.  Mostly the talk has revolved around either Morris or Lowry for a decently low class albeit mildly sexy bat.

Starting pitching isn't our problem right now.

Imagine what we could pick up for either Cain or Lincecum.

We could easily pillage the entire minor league prospect rostsers of say someone like the Yankees or Angels for either of those two.

I know the prospect of having the next Clemens for 10 years is undoubtedly sexy.  However, if Lincecum is having a year like Prior 2002, he can bring us lots of wealth to our minor league system - and possibly allow us to stop signing 35+ y.o. replacements for infield and outfield positions.

by DaveK on May 6, 2007 1:22 AM PDT reply actions

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 5/6
It's not that the Giants have the prospect of having the next Clemens for 10 years, it's that they have the chance to have TWO. There are a lot of great sluggers out there, most teams have at least one, and many have at least two. But teams that have two elite ace pitchers spent a lot of time playing in October. I'll take the pitching (especially in the pitcher's park they play in), and hope they can cobble together a good enough lineup to win.

by English Professor on May 6, 2007 1:37 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 5/6
I don't even want to think about trading Lincecum just for personal preference, but even from a pragmatic standpoint there's a reason guys like Cain and The Enchanter don't get traded - there's really no way to get the kind of value you should from them. Of the teams you mentioned, the Angels aren't going to part with the multiple top prospects you'd need to make that kind of deal and barring dealing Hughes (which they wouldn't) the Yankees don't even have the minor league talent to make that worthwhile for us.

Lincecum is a once-in-a-generation kind of talent and Cain isn't far behind and those guys just don't get traded.

Winn RF
Vizquel SS
Klesko 1B
Durham 2B
Molina C
Feliz LF
Linden RF
Frandsen 3B
Lincecum P

I know there are examples of other trunkations doing this same thing (and we do it often at my work, shortening words like Environmental to words like Envi (envy), so it's not without precedent.

I'm not usually a big fan of poetry, but this was great, Grant.

And I was thinking earlier that this DOES feel like Christmas. The anticipation has been great fun.  Willie Mays and WilRiv both turn 76 today. Good day all the way around.

Things on Sabean's List of Things To Do On Monday:

  1. Get some reliable, good hitting
  2. Get some reliable, good hitting
  3. Get some reliable, good hitting
But those can wait another day.  (Hell, we've waited YEARS; one more day won't matter.)

According to Will Carroll, Ortiz's injury is minor and he should miss only about the minimum 15 days, though the Giants may be conservative. That means The Enchanter has three or four starts to make sure he doesn't get sent back down.

For Good Announcers
Just mute the TV and put on the radio broadcast. The respective delays are usually not synched very well (since, well, there is no reason for them to be), but it can often be a much better listening experience than what you get on national broadcasts.

So in fantasy, I have Lincecum starting tonight. I'm getting reamed by my opponent this week and won't be able to come back, but the irony is he has Cole Hamels.

Now comes the dilemma. Bonds probably won't start tonight. I have an open utility spot, and the only two players I have available to put in tonight are Bonds and Ryan Howard. I have this feeling Howard's gonna strike out three times.

Should I go with the "huge star in need of a turnaround facing possibly overpressured ace-in-the-making" path, or the "maybe Bonds will pinch hit" road?

Help me, Giants fans. You're my only hope.

Go for Barry. Howard has looked pretty bad this weekend. He was one of the few who didn't join in the fun on Thursday. I don't think Lincecum will give him anything better to hit. Besides, you wouldn't want something detrimental to the Giants benefitting yourself right?

Oh crap, I almost couldn't finish typing that without cracking the kind of smile that would have given me away in a heartbeat if we'd been talking face to face...

Go with Barry. He doesn't seem to be resting as much this year (still early, though), so if he's not in you're practically sure to see him pinch hit, which means you'll at leats get a walk out of the deal.

And if he doesn't play at all, no negative impact on your BA and a difference of maybe one or two runs for the week.

I used to like Roger Clemens.

But he's singlehandedly turning MLB Free Agency into a joke. Now, I hear, he actually has to spend 3 or four weeks in the minors getting into shape.

Because, you know, he hasn't had the whole month of April to do that. Jesus, what a complete farce.

Personally, I'm in favor of some kind of rule stipulating season ineligibility for veterans who decline contract offers over a certain amount during the free agency period. I'm sure it will have to have more to it than this, but Clemens is setting what I consider to be a dangerous Free Agent precedent.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 5/6
I think that as much as what you say is true, there are good players in baseball who are more business oriented than anything else, and who will see an opportunity not only to make the same amount of money while playing two to three fewer months, but also to be able to make that money after taking some time to see what teams are winning - which for me is the most disgusting thought. It doesn't have to be a lot of players to be a problem. In my opinion it's a problem now only because Clemens has been able to do it more than once without question.

Bad for Free Agency. Bad for Parity. Bad for the first two or three months of baseball. Just... bad.

I first thought that's it's so cool that Lincecum's debut is on ESPN national TV. On second thought, I wish it was a regular game, cause Kruk and Kuip would be giving Lincecum more airtime, more gushing, more compliments, more analysis, more stories. Miller and Morgan and giving us the unbiased national bland play-by-play, and a whole lotta Gammons on Clemens action.

I may have to mute and get KNBR on the speakers.

Yeah, I heard the curve was the out pitch, but after the 1st inning HR, they haven't thrown one with 2 strikes. Also, Gammons said some hitters claimed the change was his toughest pitch to pick up, but he's only thrown one. I don't get it.

freaking Chulk. You want to feel good about him because he got them out of what could have been a huge fifth inning and then he gets that big second out on Victorino, but he gives up a double to a weak hitting pitcher and grooves a 2-0 pitch to Rollins. What can you do with such an inconsistent pitcher?? DFA??
