Open Gameday Thread, 4/7

Matt Morris was terrible in the spring, but he had a great first start. Same with Noah Lowry.

Russ Ortiz: destined to give up six runs. I hope I'm wrong, but it's hard to argue with unrelated data points.

Yes, good news on pitchers three and four, but 12 hits and 1 run is incredibly worrying.

Re: Better data point
I dunno.  I can't help thinking that if Feliz wasn't in last night's lineup, the Giants would have had a much better shot at winning - he basically cost the team two runs, which is the difference in the game (first, he pussies out on throwing to the plate on a play that's an easy out if he just would have thrown the frickin' ball, then he pussies out on crossing the plate himself because the Dodgers' catcher has it blocked.  What kind of Giant is he?)

by ololo3 on Apr 7, 2007 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: Better data point
I had that exact same thought...I love watching the Giants, win or lose, watching baseball is just fun, but its no fun to watch him play...Is there any way we could start some sort of online petition asking to relegate Feliz and his 5 mil contract to the bench?

I would take Aurilia and Klesko or Aurilia and Niekro any day of the week over having Feliz in the lineup.

The Chronicle today mentions that the Giants have interest in Jose Cappelan, the Brewers' reliever.  He throws in the "upper 90's," so you gotta like that.  Maybe we can trade Feliz and a coupon for free delivery on their next Safeway.com order and land him...

It also says that Schmidt is basically a selfish ass who cares more about money than he does about his team.  I gotta ask, though, in this day and age, doesn't that describe like 95% of the players?

And article on the Giants' site says that the Giants didn't even make an offer on Schmidt, so I don't see how anyone could conclude that Schmidt's a self ass out for the biggest paycheck. Particularly after he turned down a bigger contract from the Mariners in 2001.

And Capellan would be sweet. IIRC, he's a bit of an Frod in that there's not much past the fastball, but that's better than what we've got.

In all seriousness
Is there any conceivable real-world trade of Feliz? Who really takes that guy with his salary? Do any of the big-money teams need a backup 3rd baseman?

One would think that, in the right situation, he's at least worth a reliever, and we could use that, and we've got a surplus of infielders. Seems like a no-brainer, but I guess the problem is that the giants don't know how to handle "no-brainers".

Re: The reason
The sad thing is that you're probably exactly right.   At times, the Giants seem to make decisions like this as if they're playing a baseball simulation game for the PC in which you get stats, but don't ever actually get to watch the games (Out of the Park Baseball, for example).  They see he had a lot of RBIs and figure he's got value.  He may have a low batting average, but he finds ways to get it done, so maybe they figured $5M was a steal for this invaluable run producer.

by ololo3 on Apr 7, 2007 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Re: The reason
I often wonder if any other team would have matched what the Giants gave Feliz.  I find it hard to imagine that anyone would have valued him as highly as the Giants did.

by Chaco on Apr 7, 2007 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Re: The reason
Hey, I play Out of the Park all the time, and I would certainly bench Pedro. Their problem isn't a focus on stats, it's a misunderstanding over which give an accurate evaluation of a players talent. OPS for example is player-dependent, RBI is team-dependent. Had almost any other Giant batted every day in Pedro's lineup spots they would have driven in more runs. IIRC, he didn't even have a great average with RISP for that matter.

Sabean is Lost in Fiscal Mismanagement
The Giants wrote at least three contracts which seemed to place them in a vacuum of rational thought. Those overly generous contracts were for Feliz (no league interest), Zito (interest, but the Giants overpaid by tens of millions), and Bonds (who should have had league interest, but didn't for reasons we all understand).

The only guy they can somehow explain the big money for is Bonds, who built the stadium they play in. They can almost justify that $15 million, but they didn't necessarily have to pay it.

i mean yeah feliz is the biggest offender (he always seems to get up at important times and consistently not come through) but the main point is that our offense is just really feeble.

it was pretty optomistic to think that durham was going to repeat the year that he had last year, and to think that he was going to be a consistent run producer was premature at best.

as every year, we needed to go out and get a bat...i mean it's not like we didn't try (carlos lee, soriano) but in the end we just didn't get it done.

Screw it. Start Niekro at third just for that at-bat. Let's try psychology on Feliz.

by Rusty the Mechanical Man on Apr 7, 2007 3:20 PM PDT reply actions

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 4/7
I don't mind Klesko on the team, I just mind him batting against a lefty reliever in the 8th inning on a one-run game with the tying and go-ahead runs on, as Bochy had him do last night.

Klesko has a good chance to be the third or fourth best hitter on this team, so sadly he is not really the problem.

i hate to say this, but the beginning of the downfall of the giants is when we decided to go with edgardo alfonzo instead of re-signing kent.

if i remember correctly, kent wasn't opposed to resigning with us...we just didn't offer him enough...

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 4/7
Today's game was very predictable. You sit out Bonds, Molina and Vizquel when the Giants are already in a batting slump, and you're pitching your number five starter against the other team's number one starter, and your chances of winning are very small. I don't blame Bochy for resting regulars, but today was a bad time to do it. The first week isn't even over yet, are guys really tired?? I would think with all the cold weather the team is more rusty than tired right now. Who needs a day off?? Did any Dodgers get the day off?? And that team is as old as we are!!
