The Dominoes are falling...

Tad Iguchi to the Pads for a year:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/weblog/2007/12/fukodome_to_cubs.html

Dunno the terms, but one year sounds like a good deal for the Friars.

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
The article also seems to suggest that Pads are NOT after Rowand. Uh-oh...

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
Signing Rowand to Fukudome like money (4 years and $48M) would not be the worst move the Giants could make.  It sure would bet the hell out of trading Lincecum for Rios.

I completely agree, but that is a little bit like saying getting shot in the foot is better than being shot in the chest

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
nah it's more like losing your little toe. not really gonna hamper you much.  Except when the Giants wear sandals.
you will suffer humiliation when the sports team from my area defeats the sports team from your area

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
But getting shot in the foot isn't better than getting shot in the chest at all! Believe me, I know!

Wait... we are talking cortisone, right?

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
How in the hell is adding a still relatively young player (30) who last year hit 27 home runs, had a .309 BA, and a .374 OBP, while playing quality defense in centerfield akin to being shot anywhere? Anything close to a reasonable contract with this guy helps the Giants. Certainly not enough to make them competitive next year, but he makes them a better team as they add more pieces to the puzzle.

Or are we just assuming any signing or any trade is bad?

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
I think you're missing the hyperbole here, and possibly the jest.

But to be fair, it was never ever the acquisition of Rios that anybody thought was a problem. Anybody here would have likely welcomed Rios happily in most circumstances. It was the acquisition of Rios at the expense of either Cain or Lincecum that made it a bad idea. The idea behind a trade is to get better, and that trade would leave us at a wash long term in a best case scenario. The only reason to pull a trade that leaves you the same as before is for the sake of new faces (like the case of whoever plays 3b next year, probably not much better than Feliz, but at least a new face!). We don't need a new face for Lincecum or Cain. Their welcomes are hardly worn.

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
Boy I feel like the biggest idiot ever. You were OBVIOUSLY talking about Rowand, and I responded like you were talking about Rios. Which reminds me, I need to make that "I'm the biggest idiot ever" Diary. Considering this flub, I think it's probably way overdue....

Sorry. Really. I hate it when I do stuff like that. It's a total waste of a comment. You can just completely ignore my above post. It gets filed under d. For dismissable.

Or u, for unnecessary. Or m, for misguided....

Well, it gets filed somewhere, anyway.

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
Because Rowand had a career year and chances are will never replicate this past season, especially not at AT&T Park.

5 years of a guy who doesn't hit for much power isn't anything special, IMO.  We have plenty of guys like that.  Rowand's only topped 13 HR twice in his entire career and it's not like he's a crazy doubles hitter, aside from what he did this year and in 2004.  His OBA has jumped up and down quite a bit, too . . .very inconsistent.

Not a shot to the foot or to the chest, more like a kick to the groin.  You keel over, your stomach feels like it's about to drop out, and you become nauseous.  And you feel the aftereffects for quite a while, because you're limited in what you can do for some time.  That's what a 5 year, $70 million contract to Aaron Rowand does to me.  Bad analogy, but whatever.  You get my point =).

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
If they pay out that contract for Rowand I think they are being stupid, but he still makes this team better. Rowand would be a better defensive centerfielder than anyone on the team (only Davis has a chance to be better and who knows if he can hit enough to be a regular,) and his average year offensively would help - not a hell of lot - but it would help. I'm betting a more reasonable contract can be had.

And I'd like to see the difference to the Giants defense a Rowand and Frandsen playing regularly would make for their up the middle play. Of course, we are probably stuck with Durham and Winn playing second and center, but my dreams of marginal improvements still get me through the long winter nights.

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
You're right it wouldn't be the end of the world, but i'd be very surprised if Rowand signed a deal of that size. Rowand will get closer to to the Hunter deal than the Fukudome one.

Rowand
Kinda seems like the team is running out of options, which is never a good way to make decisions but pretty much standard procedure in Giantsland these days. And that could mean that either (a) Rowand gets more years and/or money from the Giants than anyone has been imagining or (b) he signs elsewhere and shortly threrafter we read that he passed up a better offer from the Giants.

Signing Rowand would mean losing our 2nd-round pick (somewhere around #50-53). Thats unfortunate but not terrible, given that he's a pretty good player. However, re-signing Feliz would mean forgoing a supplemental 1st-round pick (around #37). I really hope that Sabean & co. ask themselves: would I give up a Nick Noonan for a year or two of Feliz? And I really hope that its clear to them too that the answer is: no way.

Re: Rowand
Nice point about the draft picks. I guess resigning Feliz isn't as ideal as we all thought.;)

Fall back and recover
Last check the SF Giants 2008 opening day line-up per GM Brian Sabean during a KNBR radio show:

  C  BMolina
  1b ?
  2b Durham
  3b Frandsen
  Ss Vizquel
  Lf Roberts
  Cf Winn
  Rf Schierholtz

Time to get to work Mr Sabean. Dumpster diving commences after Wednesday non-tenders, Thursday Mitchell Report and after winter meetings discussions are finalized. Best of luck and Merry Christmas.

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
I feel like something's got to happen with 1B and 3B soon.  Sure these other guys we're talking about (Kosuke, Rowand, Matsui, etc.) would be/would have been nice additions to the lineup of a contending team, but the real holes in the lineup are at the IF corners.  Surely, Sabean has to realize this and try to do at least something to get some production out of those spots.

Knowing Sabes, I'd say that means the Sean Casey signing and the trade of Lowry for Rolen is imminent.  Yech.

Re: The Dominoes are falling...
The way Sabes sounded on KNBR, he does not really want to stand pat, but what else can he do?  Overpay for these crappy hitters?  What he should do is wait for the overpayment of hitters happens(like Rowand).  This sounds crazy, but he should go after some pitchers like Silva and then wait and trade Lowry and Sanchez for players like Encarnacion when the Reds realize they need more pitching.  He should lock up some pitching and trade for hitting.  The way the NL west is set up, every pitcher in the majors should take a pay cut to play in the NL West.  With the exception of Crackorado, the ballparks are pretty pitcher friendly.
