Billy Beane wrote a book called Moneyball
In it, Durham loudly and consistently refuses to play the outfield. Durham is not a good second baseman, but I figure that's where he's most valuable. A bit like Kent.

he kills the club defensively at 2B.  He has reinvented himself as a hitter and think he would be an excellent OF if he desired.

by wilriv21 on Sep 29, 2006 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Per ZR, he's -5 runs per 150 games
Below average, but far from terrible. And he'd definitely be a below average outfielder unless he was in left, and he might well be a below average outfielder in left. The reason to move him to the outfield would be to keep him healthy, not to save his defense.

I am also sceptical about him reinventing himself as a hitter. There are more runs everywhere in the NL this year, and a rising tide floats all boats. I very much doubt he'll match these numbers next year.

My one question quiz for any potential manager:

shows clip of Correia's 8th inning

So, do you put in the emergency closer just because you've named an emergency closer to do closer things, or do you leave in the guy who has proven he can get outs on this specific night?

Good way to sum up the season, and all but guarantee the Dodgers a playoff spot. Isn't it great to see them celebrate on our field.

Giants season in microcosm
Tying run on 3rd, 1 out, can't get it done. Looking like they have a chance, when really they have none. Feh.

Marketing Dept. is active, even after a loss
"Feh" is a nice, soothing sound, and is emblematic of the 2006 season.

It must be stamped on a T-shirt and prominently displayed in the McCovey Shop. Could be a big seller.

Re: Marketing Dept. is active, even after a loss
Why would anyone want to pay for anything emblematic of the 2006 season? (That could apply to Shea Hillenbrand as well as the t-shirt.)

The good news (such as it is) is the Brewists' loss means that at least four NL teams will finish no better than the Giants.

Okay, that looks even less like good news in print than it seemed when I was thinking about it. WHOO! WE WON'T FINISH WORSE THAN MILWAUKEE!

Ain't no big deal to own something that's out on the sidewalk labeled with a greasy piece of cardboard with the word FREE written on it in green crayon. Which is pretty much how the Giants have disposed of the last 13 games.

We can't even play spoiler right. Sorry Phils. We wanted to beat them. They just couldn't do it.

I know the Cubs haven't won anything in a century, but they haven't had as many heart breaking playoff/late season moments as we have. Where's our HBO special?

Anyone else at the game?
I was sitting up in 319, and I'd say the atmosphere for at least the first three or four innings was somewhere between "subdued" and "funereal", which was pretty shocking for the last Orange Friday of the year with the Dodgers in town. The LA fans, of whom there were a fair number, made more noise. Just a frustrating evening all around.

Two sightings:

  1. Leaving the park a cop literally pushed me onto the MUNI median strip so Barry Bonds could get through in his white BMW (he was wearing a striped shirt and on his cell phone, blank expression on his face. Also, this was maybe 15 minutes after the game ended.)
  2. Then I walked right by Steve "Psycho" Lyons waiting to get into MoMo's. Jerk.
