Interesting if True

Draper answers the mail bag with an interesting answer if true:  http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060306&content_id=1337088&vkey=spt2006n ews&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf

Star-divide

The interesting piece of news (anyone can corroborate?) is that he says that if Brad Hennessey wins the #5 spot, Jamey Wright will head to the bullpen for long relief or spot starts.  "Wright seems assured of sticking."

I know that Wright has said this spring that he'll do whatever the team wants, start, long relief, whatever, but I took that for spring time exuberance from a newbie because the bullpen is pretty set with Fassero as long relief/spot starter:  Benitez, Worrell, Kline, Walker, Fassero, plus two of Munter, Accardo, Taschner for 7 in the bullpen, 5 starting rotation, and 13 position players (8 starters, 5 bench).  If Wright gets the long relief position, that probably means Taschner's out since Fassero would become a LOOGY and we don't need 3 of them.

Re: Interesting if True
When he was signed, I recall it was quoted "Wright is a major league pitcher."

I took this to mean two things:

1.) they expected him to make the team
2.) If he didn't, he would be allowed to sign elsewhere before the end of spring.

I like having Fassero as a LOOGY more than Kline, and a lot more than Taschner [who I want just to relieve.].

The Dodgers ARE evil.

On the Bubble?
If Munter keeps putting up goose eggs, he's a lock.  Accardo has pitched well so far, even against Team USA.  It's still early, but I'm thinking Taschner and Tyler Walker are on the bubble.

bubbled Walker
You really think Tyler Walker is on the bubble?  Given how he has "proven" himself over the last two seasons and that he is out of options, I would think that his job is fairly safe.

A month ago I thought Accardo had the edge over Taschner, but I have changed my mind about that now.  Taschner is now throwing his curveball and is more experienced.  Accardo, who just began pitching a few years ago, has more to learn by spending time in the minors.

Does Hennessey have to win the 5th starter's job to make the active roster?  Would the Giants rather have him in the major league bullpen or starting every 5th day in Fresno.  Barring injuries to the bullpen, I suspect the latter.

As I have said before, if both Wright and Greene make the roster, it will be interesting to see who comes off the 40-man roster.  Erick Threets, Angel Chavez and Jason Ellison seem the most likely players to be removed from the 40-man roster.

Re: Who is....
It would be Linden.  There is also Sweeney.  I guess the question is more whether you want your 5th OFer to be a hitter (i.e., Linden) or a defensive sub and pinch runner type (i.e., Ellison).

Thinking aloud ... Would Ellison be an upgrade for the Marlins over Reed and Aguila?  If so, what might the Marlins be willing to offer for Ellison?  I was thinking perhaps a high school player they drafted in 2004 (still a couple years before they would need to be added to the 40-man roster), but those players had some rather poor stats (i.e., .650 OPS by OFers).

Re: Who is....
Will there be a 5th OF?

As noted, there's five bench spots open.  One goes to the backup catcher.  One goes to Sweeney.  One goes to Vizcaino.  And one goes to Finley.  That leaves one spot.

While Sweeney can play in the OF in a pinch plus the Giants probably hope to keep Finley playing as much as possible, there's no one who can play in the middle infield other than Vizcaino unless Felipe moves a lot of people around, like Sweeney to 1B, Niekro to 3B, and Feliz to SS.

That would mean that Felipe's PH ranks would be low because you can't really PH with the backup catcher nor could you really PH with Vizcaino, or there would be no one available to take those positions readily.  That leaves Sweeney and the non-playing OF to PH.

Adding a MI would open up Vizcaino or the MI to PH duties, whereas another OF would only add another option (though probably better option than the MI or Vizcaino).  I would think a spot would be open for a MI, either 2B or SS, though there's not much good options there at the moment.

According to Shulman, there will be 5 OFs (not including Sweeney).  See the other thread "Limeup construction redux"

Re: Who is....
I don't see that in the article, he just said that they are in competition for the 5th OF spot, but I didn't see any thing related to Felipe saying that there will absolutely be a 5th OF.  He said it might depend on what the team decides it needs more a corner OF with power or someone with a speedy pair of legs.  If I'm missing it, please point it out to me, but I don't see anything else related to your point.

And from what I recall, Chavez has some speed and he has shown a bit of power in the past, as well, at least more than Ellison has ever shown, I think.  His main problem was his inabilty to take walks.  So he could fill the bill plus play a position where Vizquel or Durham could take a rest for a day, leaving Sweeney as the 5th OF, if necessary.

Re: Who is....
You're right, Martin.  It didn't say Alou said that, but the way I read Schulman's piece it sounded to my like a foregone conclusion that there would be 5 outfielders NOT counting Sweeney.

Maybe I read too much into it, but it sounded like Schulman knew what he was talking about.

Re: Who is....
Nothing against Henry, as I like to read his columns, but I've found that journalist's interpretation of what someone says to vary a lot.  I remember when the Giants used to post the press conferences on their website (just last season, they stopped this offseason...) so I would stay up at night and transcribe, word for word, exactly what was said by Sabean and then post my thoughts on each interesting nugget of info.

Well, the next day, when I read the various accounts of that press conference by the various newspapers in the Bay Area, it would be like that old child's game of telling a story to a child at one end of the line and have that story repeated down the line, resulting in various versions of what was said, all very similar but with key differences.

I found that to be true this offseason as well without the replay feature.  I pulled up all the writers' report on the call, and, from what I recall, only one writer noted a piece of info that I thought was interesting, and each had a different version of the press conference, all sounding about the same, but one would emphasis one thing while another would totally drop another thing.

One I can recall in some detail was the first press conference after Colletti had took the Dodgers GM job, where Sabean discussed how he's hoping Colletti show up for Sabean's wedding, even though he'll be busy, because he's going to pull this huge prank on him.  One writer made it sound like a threat, by cutting out parts of it, another put in the whole thing so that you could see Sabean was in a friendly and joking mood.

This happened many a time to Bonds as well, which I've documented numerous times in my blog.  I'm sure the journalists work hard at what they do and are generally honest as well, but they are human and not everyone would be as anal as me to sit down and listen and transcribe the whole call, they jot down a few key notes and are forced by the deadline to take a few shortcuts, I'm sure.  And some are human and just assume the worse of Bonds and just mail it in with their article.

While I understand why they do what they do, it doesn't make it right.  I wish whatever needs to change in their work process, whether a later deadline or stricter guidelines on interpreting a press conference or greater vigilence towards reporting what's happening vs. opining on the situation or just better processes all the way around, so that we, the news consumer, can trust that we are getting the unvarnished facts, and not just their interpretation of the facts.

Re: Who is....
Oh and you're right, Schulman's version is probably the right version, his quote seemed more complete than the one that Draper had in his piece, I think Draper dropped a word here or there - there, a perfect example of what I was talking about, how there's different versions of the same interview session.

The team should just provide a voice recognition system to transcribe the interview into computer format and distribute to the reporters right afterward with an e-mail.  Then the reporter would get exactly what was said (there will be a slight delay as the team should proof-read the text to make sure it translated right.) and the team and player can stop worrying as much about being misquoted, the team will be releasing the official transcript of it, it will be harder to misquote that.

So if it's a 5th OF, I definitely want Linden in there, he won't learn that much more in the minors and I think, from all the stuff I've read about him, I think his ego and confidence is fragile and could take a hit if he is sent down.  Plus he's younger than Ellison.

However, I worry that he will regress on the bench because I was hoping he could do a Feliz can be able to come in and start in 2007 in RF.  If I had my druthers (well if I had it, we wouldn't have this discussion probably as Vlad will be in RF :^) I would rather give him another year to prove himself in AAA and be fully prepared for a fulltime role in 2007.  But with him up, while he'll be a better bench player overall, since he seems to be fragile mentally, I'm not sure if he wouldn't regress on the bench, particularly since Finley will probably get the vast majority of the ABs in the OF not taken by the three starters.

Re: Who is....
My question is why would you want Vizcaino being used as a pinch hitter?  He is a career .271/.318/.346 hitter, whom PECOTA projects to hit .258/.306/.374 this year.  Is that really any better than the .257/.295/.385 that PECOTA projects for Chavez?

If you need a backup middle infielder, as well as a backup catcher, in reserve on the bench, why add Chavez to the roster to fill that role?  Vizcaino is already filling that role.  If you want a pinch hitter, get someone who can actually hit.  The PECOTA projection for Linden is .254/.338/.456 and for Ellison .267/.321/.382.

At least in the short-run I think the Giants roster is in a situation where barring injuries they have only one backup infielder (not including first base).  That could change by July if Linden continues to struggle against major league pitchers and Kevin Frandsen continues to hit minor league pitchers.

by steve S on Mar 8, 2006 5:34 PM PST up reply actions

Re: Who is....
Because as bad as that is, it is still better than what a pitcher can hit.

PECOTA may project that for Chavez, but Vizcaino is signed and staying.

So the point becomes do you want Chavez or do you want a 5th OF.

If you have a 5th OF, your bench is essentially the 2 OF available to PH because wouldn't you need to keep your MI and C in reserve for late game substitution or replacement?  Plus, speaking of reserve, if Finley is one of the OF, he has to be held out so that he can replace Bonds, so that basically means you only have Ellison/Linden, i.e. the 5th OF, to PH in the middle innings.

If you have Chavez, it is the OF sitting on the bench and Chavez and Vizcaino who are available to PH, giving you three options.  Or only two if it is Finley and Alou saves him to replace Bonds.

OK, I see your point now, having Linden as PH is probably better than picking between Vizcaino and Chavez.

Though, that's only if you want power.  Linden hasn't hit that well, period, for his career, lefties or righties, whereas Vizcaino has at least hit lefties OK, and righties better than Linden.  Given that there are more RHP than LHP, wouldn't you want Vizcaino for more general hitting situations, and use Chavez when you want some power?  Because with Linden, it is basically hit for power or miss and make an out.  I guess it depends on what you want on your bench.

Re: On the Bubble?
Good point about Walker, Dr.B, I didn't think that way but I think you got something there.

My scenario that I was thinking might happen is that since Walker has closer experience, Sabean is holding him to the end of spring training then offer him up to teams in need of a closer, whether through injury or poor performance.

But outright just dropping him seems like a possibility since he didn't really do that well last season when he wasn't closing, and he didn't do particularly well at closing either, though he did do a passable job.
