Schulman at the Winter Meetings....

Link

According to one major-league source, the Giants are talking to the San Diego Padres about Ryan Klesko, and another source said Seattle first baseman Richie Sexson is in play and the Giants are interested in acquiring him, perhaps as part of a three-way deal.
They are looking at other outfielders and reportedly are kicking around the name of Reds power hitter (and strikeout artist) Adam Dunn. The Giants are not looking merely at corner outfielders, a source said, but also those who can play center. Two who are said to be available are the Cubs' Jacque Jones and the Devil Rays' Rocco Baldelli.
The agent for lefty Darren Oliver, who pitched impressively for the Mets in 2006, said he has had several discussions with the Giants.
According to sources, the Giants are talking to Colorado about 28-year-old right-hander Jason Jennings, whom the Rockies will move if they can get a younger big-league starter in return.
Interesting stuff, all. Let's see: Barf, at the right price, ohmygod, barf, no way he comes at a fair price, barf, no way he comes at a fair price.

Edit: OMFGWTFBBQ!!!!!!

A source indicated late Tuesday that Seattle might have interest in sending slugger Richie Sexson to the Giants and reliever Rafael Soriano to the Braves. In return, the Mariners would receive a starting pitcher (Tim Hudson) and a first baseman (Adam LaRoche).

The Braves -- who are shopping for relief help -- would then also receive relief pitcher Armando Benitez from the Giants.

Hat tip: Lookout Landing.

Obviously something would need else would need to come from the Giants...right?

Another edit: With the number of offseason diaries exploding, remember there's a "recommend a diary" button for diaries that you think have some good discussion going on.

Klesko is a free agent so why would the Giants be talking to San Diego about him?

Re: Schulman at the Winter Meetings....
At a couple mill for one year Klesko could make a good platoon partner for Richie at 1B.  Richie rakes Lefties and Klesko rakes righties much better then Sweeney does.

Re: Schulman at the Winter Meetings....
Would be a productive platoon if a Burell or Sexson deal doesn't happen

In fact, it would be  much cheaper and would save trading the little young talent we have.

Because lets face it Aurilia alone at 1B is nothing to be excited about.  Klesko/Aurilia would be a step up.  I'd accept it

I've been suffering from post traumatic stress disorder ever since Game 6.

Klesko, why him??
Why do the Giants mutter around looking for a 1B when there is an inexpensive, talented and available one down in Anaheim?  The Angels let it be known they are shopping for a 1B making Casey Kotchman expendable.  Before you laugh too hard, this kid is more talented than the McCoven highly praised Todd Linden.  Many McCoven faithful are sold Linden is ready to burst out on the MLB scene.  So is Kotchman and he is only 24 yrs old.  A glove of silk and a stroke of dare I say The Thrill.  Give them a call Sabean, help the Angels rid themselves of this kid ready to break out this season.

by wilriv21 on Dec 5, 2006 8:20 PM PST reply actions

Re: Klesko, why him??
This is exactly the sort of player Sabean should be pursuing -- a onetime hot prospect who has flopped but is still young -- and exactly the sort he never pays the slightest attention to.

by Evan on Dec 5, 2006 8:26 PM PST up reply actions

Re: Klesko, why him??
I agree, I think Kotchman is a great idea.  I would rather see someone like Carlos Pena platoon at first over an old, broken down vet like Klesko.

by sfgreg on Dec 5, 2006 8:29 PM PST up reply actions

Re: Klesko, why him??
Anaheim might have made him available, but for a price the Giants can't pay. They are notorious for overvaluing their prospects. Every offseason or trade deadline they're rumored to be shopping their prospects for big league help, but never end up doing anything because they want too much for unproven players.

Re: Klesko, why him??
I wouldn't laugh at all.  There is no way that Kotchman forgot how to rake like his minor league numbers would indicate.  They are consistently better than Linden's numbers, and if he hasn't hit well lately I would chalk it up to small sample size or maybe nagging injuries.

As long as there isn't anything seriously wrong with him, and as long as the Angels don't want our entire stable of pitching prospects in return, I would get Kotchman in a heartbeat.  The kid can rake.

by North Side Chicago Expatriate Giants Fan on Dec 5, 2006 10:18 PM PST up reply actions

Kotchman
In his first stint with Angels, his worst game was better than Linden's best game during Todd's first stint in SF. In Casey's second stint in Anaheim he hit 7 HRs in 135 AB and showed flashes of the brillant player he can become.

LAA is talking with Atlanta about LaRoche to play 1B and has inquired elsewhere. Once they trade for a 1B Kotchman will be expendable. He is over mono and playing winter ball in Puerto Rico.

This is the kind of talent I envisioned when Magowan & Co stated younger and healthier players for the future.

on another note, why is rotoworld so hard on the giants - we didn't sign pierre or GMJ to $50M contracts.

Kenny Lofton-OF- Dodgers
In looking to upgrade in center field, the Rockies discovered that free agent Kenny Lofton received an offer far above what the Rockies thought he'd command.

Funny... we had no idea the Giants were involved in the bidding. In truth, it's probably from the Cubs or Rangers, assuming that it exists at all. The Rockies are also looking at Jay Payton, who is another potential target of the Rangers. Their best bet to upgrade in center might come in a Jason Jennings trade.

Good point, but in a ridiculous winter where there's been a huge discrepency between the money being thrown around and the actual talent involved, it seems odd to single out a team that hasn't signed a single deal over $18M as the reckless spenders of the year.

Mariners fan here:

The M's and the Giants make out like bandits. It's the Braves that get absolutely screwed in this deal. The Mariners trade Sexson and an oft-injured but good reliever for a younger, better version of Sexson and a starter who just had an off year and shows every sign of probably bouncing back.

You guys...well...Armando Benitez sucks. Richie Sexson doesn't.

It's the Braves that get screwed. They get a piece of shit reliever and a really good but probably-injured reliever.

M's and Giants fans should be rejoicing.

Re: Yeah, we're that Stupid
Thats why it won't happen.  If the deal was w/ the Nats I would believe it, but the Braves' GM is too savy.

by amoose on Dec 6, 2006 8:45 AM PST up reply actions

Re: Schulman at the Winter Meetings....
So the trade is basically a switcheroo of unwanted contracts (Sexson, Hudson, Benitez), and the real trade is Soriano for LaRoche?  That seems to help both teams...and any situation where Benitez is several thousand miles away from SF helps the Giants.  Please Santa, this is all I want for Christmas (well, maybe some new shoes also).

by scotterduder on Dec 5, 2006 9:45 PM PST reply actions

If this trade happens, I'll buy you some shoes!
One of these things is more unwanted than the others.

Although, if I squint my eyes just right, this deal starts to look realistic. Benitez is due $7.6M this year and Sexson $28M over two years. Pretending that Sexson was a free agent, if the Giants make this trade, it would be like waiving Benitez and signing Sexson to a two-year, $20.4M contract. Pretty good for the Giants, but not the steal of the century or anything. And it's a very good deal for the Mariners.

But the more I think of it, the more it seems unreasonable from the Braves' perspective. Hudson has three years and $32M left on his deal (I think). The Braves may be worried that he's slipping, but that contract is not an albatross in this crazy market. They could probably trade Hudson (and maybe a little cash) for a good reliever without essentially throwing away LaRoche. And then there's the fact that Benitez probably couldn't pass a physical due to his knees.

Ah... forget everything I said... I love this rumor!

Re: If this trade happens, I'll buy you some shoes
LaRoche seems to be coming up in a number of rumors.  Why are the Braves eager to deal him? Seems like they could do a lot better than just, as you said, throw him away in a deal that is essentially just an exchange of bad contracts.  I know the M's wouldn't do this trade if he wasn't involved, but you would think the Braves could do better with him.  I would like to see the Braves and Giants work out a deal involving LaRoche, but they probably dont have what the Braves are looking for.

by sfgreg on Dec 5, 2006 10:18 PM PST up reply actions

Re: If this trade happens, I'll buy you some shoes
I read that the Braves have been trying to trade LaRoche to the Pirates for Mike Gonzalez, which seems like a pretty decent deal for both sides (uh, don't tell the Braves GM  I said that) but the Pirates have been hesitating.  I'm guessing the Braves have some kind of blue-chip 1st base prospect waiting and they see LaRoche as expendable.

by scotterduder on Dec 5, 2006 10:24 PM PST up reply actions

Aha, actual information
This is from Jayson Stark on ESPN:

"One of the most intriguing position players available this week is Braves first baseman Adam LaRoche, who has been shopped to a number of teams. The Braves believe that Scott Thorman -- who had 16 extra-base hits in 128 at-bats after a late-season recall -- is ready to step in and play first right now. Which would make LaRoche expendable in the right deal."

The Braves desperately need pitching...we have a closer to offer...please?

Yeah, but the braves are going to have to do something about that glut at catcher eventually.  I remember reading that Saltamacchia was the #1 catcher prospect in baseball a year or two ago, but McCann is hitting lights out.  It's a nice problem to have though, something we can't really relate to.  sigh

Re: If this trade happens, I'll buy you some shoes
The Braves have Brian McCann behind the plate, but he sucks defensively.  They also have Jerrod Saltalamacchia ready to catch in the bigs.

They are willing to trade LaRoche to help the team because McCann will move to first and Salty will come up and catch.

The Marlins are also interested...
"In the category of potential future business, a source familiar with the Florida Marlins' thinking said they might be interested in reacquiring closer Armando Benitez, who had a career season there in 2004, if the Giants will pay most of his $7.6 million salary. The Giants, still thin in late relief, are hoping for Benitez to rebound from knee trouble in 2007, but are said to be open to moving him."
