Youthful Things

There was a moment in the Giants loss...loss...loss..., ahem, win last night where you could almost glimpse a successful future for the Giants in the near term.  The hitting side is exempt from the glimpse, as you can't count on Omar Vizquel to pop two-run homers too often in 2007, and you hope Todd Linden isn't going to strike out every other at-bat. The pitching, though, was encouraging.

Noah Lowry gave up four runs, but pitched much better than that reads. The command was there for most of the game, the fastball was crisp, and the off-speed pitches were fooling hitters. The Lowry of the past month is the one Giants fans were waiting for. He was relieved by Scott Munter, who is very easy to picture throwing bathtub-weight sinkers in the eighth inning for the next fifteen years. That was eventually followed up by Tyler Walker, who could be a filthy closer if he would a) get some consistent command, and b) stop hanging sliders like they were repeat offending cattle rustlers. It was a snapshot of what could be, if only....

This isn't to imply the future of any of the three is an assured success. Heck, if any of them are still around for the next contending Giants team, it will be a minor coup. Still, it was easy to picture last night, the progression flowed so naturally. Lowry was missing bats, Munter was inducing his double-play balls, and Walker getting check-swing strikes on his occasionally ridiculous slider. It was a good win, and the most fun I've had watching a Giants game in a while.

Sixteen months ago, it would have been borderline ridiculous for anyone to predict Lowry, Munter, and Walker would have contributed to a win for anyone but the Fresno Grizzlies in 2005. Sixteen months from now, it could be Pat Misch, Brian Wilson, and Casey Fossum getting the team through nine innings of winning baseball. For now, though, it is enough fun to wishcast on the current bounty of young players the Giants are trying out.

Comment starter: Of the You've Gotta Tolerate These Kids! brigade, give your pick for most likely to stick around. Current minor-leaguers are eligible.

Most likely
to stick around: Ellison, as a backup.
To excel: Linden/EME/Schierholtz equally [for different reasons]

Pitchers: Cain

Hitters
I won't choose a pitcher, because young starters seem so fragile and because for relievers, the line between effective and awful seems to be so thin. I wouldn't be shocked if Munter (or Brower, for that matter) had an ERA anywhere between 2.00 and 7.00 next year.

So count me in for Linden and EME as well... strikeouts and bad defense be damned.

And, yeah, Ellison should have a big league job for awhile as well.

I don't think Cain counts
... as someone you've "gotta put up with." He's eagerly anticipated.

I think if Brad Hennessey can learn how to get lefties out, he could be a good #3 or #4 starter.

Sure
But I think Grant was referring to all the young players, and rightfully noting that rookies usually aren't that good at winning. Especially when they are playing with other rookies.

Mostly Likely to Stick Around
I'm going with Justin Knoedler. He'll play the honored Yorvit Torrealba role of backing up a guy who, offensively, isn't qualified to carry his jock strap. (Yorvit will be traded to the Mets this season.)

What about Niekro?
He's a pure, professional, power hitter. His defense is still rough but improving -- he made a number of nice plays over this past weekend that he probably wouldn't have made a month ago. His past health issues probably limit him to only playing 1st base, but is that a reason not to keep him?

On the other hand, being so valuable as trade bait for all the above reasons, he's probably less likely than the others to stick around. If Sabean ever chooses to trade him, it better not be for Kaz Matsui or Jose Guillen.

Niekro
While I like the guy and think he will get better as he plays, he has sucked againt RHP and rarely walks. At least he doesn't k a lot, and that is cause for hope.

I think the RHP prob is largely because he hasn't had consistent AB's. But the fact he will probably have an average OBP at best might be a problem. I doubt he will ever be a 100bb guy, and I hope the giants don't try and make him one. But I would like to see him law off a few more bad pitches. Also, his power numbers didn't show up consistently in the minors. This could be because he isn't going to hit power consistently and is simply hot right now, it could be his injuries sapped his power in the past, or some of each.

Niekro vs. RHP
I'd like to see Niekro get a start or two at third base... I think his "worst case scenario" is a verstaile powerful free-swinging bench guy like Feliz has been in the past.

I was quick to write off Ellison vs. righties, but he's rebounded against them... hopefully Niekro can prove me wrong as well.

Speaking of righties (and small sample sizes)... Torrealba (3 for 36 vs. righties!) is in the lineup against one tonight.

I read
somewhere [no clue where] that Niekro is highly unlikely to play 3rd again due to inury concerns. Of course, that is the other problem with the guy. He is an injury magnet. I really do believe that staying healthy is a skill.

I think you are right that Niekro's worst case is as a good backup.

Sixteen months ago...
...Tyler Walker was coming off of a 2-9 season for Toledo, so Casey Fossum seems about right.

Misch...
... is my pick, though I think Ellison's downside is Doug Glanville, which means he could stick around as long as he's got a good quote in his back pocket. Ellison's upside? Darren Lewis, perhaps?

by lyricalkiller on Jun 16, 2005 5:27 PM PDT reply actions

Glanville? Lewis?
Pretty much the same player offensively... Glanville has a little edge in slugging percentage. I imagine Ellison will settle into this neighborhood eventually, but I'd like to think his upside is higher than Lewis's lifetime .645 OPS.

Needs to work on his quotability, though.

Most Likely To Stick Around Is...
Jack Taschner. Because with a name like that, he's gotta be an FBI agent with a dossier of dirt on Brian Sabean:

"Mr. Sabean, you don't want to send me back to Fresno."

"Oh yeah, Tasch-fuck? You ever heard of Greyhound?"

"Just have a look at these photos, sir."

[Audible sound of GM-Sphincter-Tightening.]

"Jack, kiddo. Buddy. My man."

Voice-over: "Another case closed for...Jack Taschner...Special Agent Lefty."

You nailed it
I was trying to think about what kind of name Jack Taschner is.....throw in some mean hand-to-hand combat skills and it's golden!
