Thread Game Open Day, 4/12

Dodgers and Giants.

Chavez Ravine. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.

Jeff Weaver, still unlikeable, against Kirk Rueter. Just when I think I'm overreacting to Rueter being the nominal #2 starter, it looks like the brass is considering skipping Jerome Williams in the rotation. Which means more starts for Rueter. So, have a game today, Woody. Renew my confidence.

The beat goes on
Cain, Aardsma, Accardo, Munter--another fine night of pitching....it's only a week but I'm officially excited.

PS--Say it ain't so.  Can Marcus Sanders actually play?  Take that Mike Caruso.

Can you...
post Cain's line SLC (or link to it)?

Much appreciated,

Kenshin

Sorry Kenshin
Cain, 20, worked his way out of two jams while pitching six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts, yielding one walk and three hits.

The Fresno Bee said he hit 97 but who knows anymore.

by slcgiant on Apr 12, 2005 10:28 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Cain
Minor League Baseball's got the box scores and even runs a live scoreboard during the games (doesn't automatically update, though).  Cain pitched 6, 3 hits, 0 runs, 1 BB, 7K.  First two batters of the game were a walk and a hit (AAA-debut jitters?). Struck out the next batter and then settled in nicely.

They should skip Woody
pitch Tomko today.  Of course, I can think of lots of things I would do if I was manager

Given the Thursday off-day
Are they skipping Lowry as well?  The article suggest Williams will next pitch on the 19th, which would mean Lowry would miss his turn his as well.  Personally, I think they should adjust the rotation to be Schmidt, Lowry, Williams, Tomko, and Rueter starting after Thusday's off day.

by Orange Giant on Apr 12, 2005 11:41 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Not a big deal
Lowry won't be skipped...  Lowry and Schmidt have to pitch Friday and Saturday if Williams is going to be skipped, so at worst Lowry will be pushed back one further day to Saturday if they want to keep Schmidt on a 5-day rotation.

And this will be an issue again this year, um... never. Or maybe the All-Star Break. This is the only time the Giants will have two off days in a week. This kind of scheduling is usually beneficial early in the season when most teams have a starter who is injured or getting shelled. "Unfortunately", the Giants rotation is in great shape right now, so someone had to be skipped, and they decided to keep the young pitcher with the shortened Spring Training out of Coors Field.

There are plenty of starts to go around... if Lowry, Williams and Tomko stay healthy and pitch as well as we hope they do, they will all get 31-33 starts.

I agree with the readjusting of the rotation, as I'm sure most on this site do. I think today, Reuter will make a difinitive case either for or against that. Let's enjoy.

No good reason exists to use Benitez in this game.  In fact closers should never come in to protect 3 run leads unless they need the work.

Fireman theory?
So use your best reliever in what you believe will be the tightest situation in the game? (like the 6th inning today, I guess). I read on some blog that such "firemen" were not uncommon in the past...wish people would try it more often today...

by scarface on Apr 12, 2005 4:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The save stat...
has destroyed the fireman modus operandi.  Simply put, the overreliance on this counting stat means gm's put to much weight on the 9th inning and overpay the closer.  Why be a fireman when you make substantially more closing games

by kenshin1 on Apr 12, 2005 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Saves and Moneyball
I think Moneyball implied that Beane considered the "save" stat a market inefficiency to be exploited, and closers to be "fungible". Unfortunately his "Rhodes as closer" experiment bombed in the same year that closers thrived in the postseason, and the inefficiency persists..

Migraine
Having a magnitude eight migraine headache BEFORE your closer blows the save.

Wow, this has been a shitty day.

not just a save
a three-run lead, fresh-start inning, against the effin' Dodgers. This is no Francisco-Cordero-giving-up-a-solo-shot blown save; this is waking up from a night of drunken revelry and spirited celebration to find out that somebody wrote "i (heart) dick" on your forehead in permanent marker.

Opening Day karma
Don't worry guys, it's all gonna be just like our Opening triplet, late defensive error by the visiting team, which then proceeds to win the next two.
