This double header was not exactly a-buzz with offensive activity. Despite more than a sprinkling of major leaguers in the lineup, including two All Star 2b, the two teams combined for just 13 hits over 14 innings of play, with just 4 hits coming in the 1-0 opener.
No. 21 #SFGiants prospect Ty Blach twirls one-hit outing to reach double digits in wins. https://t.co/fBReRGWYUx pic.twitter.com/1i3wunEOko
— MiLB.com (@MiLB) July 20, 2016
In that 1st game, Ty Blach kept his roll going. Blach was close to perfect in the outing, facing just one over the minimum through 6 innings. Blach's now allowed just three runs in his past four starts (30 IP), and if you'd like an eye opening stat, during that stretch he's allowed fewer total baserunners (21) than he's had strikeouts (22). A lot of Giants fans are quick to put Blach at the head of the potential DFA list whenever a 40 man need comes up, but he's left-handed, he throws strikes, and he has four decent pitches that he mixes well, and that's a profile that pitches in the majors, even in major league rotations. That's not a prediction that he will, but it's certainly within the sphere of reasonable outcomes for him.
Of course, it's also a profile that relies on having a solid defense behind him, like this sterling assist last night from Kelby Tomlinson. That's not just anybody that he's getting with the spin move: that's Dee Gordon speeding down the line, but Dee was no match for Kelby's arm here:
The nightcap was a virtual offensive explosion with the two teams combining for three runs and nine hits. It even featured a HR. Whoa! let's not go crazy out there, people! Old friend Kendry Flores started for New Orleans and picked up the win with five shutout innings. This should be Kendry's final option year. With Miami in the hunt and desperate for some decent starter innings you have to wonder if he'll be on the move at the trade deadline again.
Joe Panik got in five innings in the opener, but Hunter Pence again didn't appear in either game. I'll just repeat what I said yesterday, that I like the type of feeling good that involves playing more than I do the type of feeling good that involves media inquires. That said, with a rainout the night before and storms all over the eastern US last night, I can imagine weather conditions motivating some caution for a rehabbing hamstring. I see there's 50% chance of rain there again tonight. Perhaps New Orleans wasn't the ideal venue for this rehab to get started.

Dan Slania had another fine outing, going 5.2 innings without allowing a run. But Christian Jones provided no relief, allowing his inherited runner from Slania to score and then adding some extra, just for him. The big hit was a two-run triple to light hitting 2b Todd Hankins that gave Akron a lead they wouldn't surrender.
Rodolfo Martinez allowed a couple of 9th inning insurance runs with yet another rough outing. In 7 games since being promoted to AA, Martinez has just 4 Ks against 6 BB and 11 hits in 5.1 IP. He's also hit a batter and surrendered a HR. In over 30 IP in the Cal League he allowed just 3 runs, didn't hit anybody and surrendered just 1 HR. Tough transition for the hard throwing right-hander.
Steven Duggar had a rough transition for a week or so but he seems to be in the swing of things now. Duggar's gone 8 for 21 over his last five games with two triples and a double. He was certainly the Squirrels offensive star in this game, reaching base three times, getting one of their two XBH (a Jeff Arnold triple was the other) and even stealing his second base in AA.
Gotta love a swing that can go the opposite way with some pop! On the flip side of the coin, Chris Shaw began his AA experience hot but has been in a tailspin the last week as he took another 0 fer yesterday. Shaw was, along with Duggar, the only member of the lineup not to strike out in this game as the Squirrels went down swinging 10 times against hard-throwing right-hander Julian Merryweather and his relievers.

San Jose finally salvaged a win on the final day of their 8-game southern road trip, though it was nerve-wracking to the end. Speaking of rough transitions, in his two games as the team's new closer Tyler Cyr has allowed 5 hits, 2 BBs, and 4 Runs in just 1.2 IP as he's struggled to close the door (struggled in uncharacteristic fashion). Yesterday he came within a hair's width of continuing the losing streak for the second consecutive day, allowing four hits (all singles) while trying to protect a three-run lead. Finally, with the tieing run at 3b, he ended it, getting a called 3rd strike to strike out the side. Hopefully those saves go a little smoother from here on out, Tyler!
The offense got 10 hits, including doubles from Jebavy, Adrianza, and Bennett, but they could never get a crooked number on the board, scattering four one-run innings in the game. Jose Vizcaino concluded a very successful road trip with a three hit day. It was Vizcaino's third consecutive mulit-hit game as he went 7 for 12 in High Desert with a HR and two doubles.
You can hear SJ manager Nipso Lava's thoughts on the tough road trip and other subjects here:
San Jose returns home tomorrow night for hopefully a more enjoyable week. Which leads to Public Service Announcement #2!

Krook had a rough second with the command, but he threw a FB, CH, SL, and CB. Curve is a hard one, sitting 80-83. #SFGiants
— Jen Mac Ramos (@jenmacramos) July 20, 2016
Matt Krook flashed the repertoire that has Giants fans excited. Though the bottom line was unimpressive, many of the pitches were. He came out after 2 IP as the Giants continue to be conservative with his short-season debut, as they nearly always are with Pitchers in their draft summer.
Manuel Geraldo had an adventuresome game in this one, coming up with two hits and an RBI, a SB, a CS, and two errors from 3b. That's filling up a stat sheet!
Heath Quinn took the starring role for the team in this game with three hits including a double. Check out this bullet:
Jen got great open face footage of Bryan Reynolds and Gustavo Cabrera last night as well which is, of course, the best way to check out a swing.
Look for a full writeup of her trip north soon on the site with much more great footage and first-hand views. And don't forget to get her interview questions if there's something you want to hear.

Strong armed 8th rounder Stephen Woods, out of SUNY Albany, had his longest outing and set a new high with 4 Ks, but his defense didn't help out as errors from Nathanael Javier and Hector Santiago led to 3 unearned runs that helped set up a depressing end to this game. Sandro Cabrera, coming off a great, near-perfect 5 inning outing his last time out, ran out of gas in his 4th inning this time, giving up the game-losing runs in the top of the 9th. Cabrera had allowed an unearned run in the 8th that tied the game, the result of his own error and then a failure to turn a potential inning ending double play. Cabrera opened the 9th surrendering a double and a single to the first two batters and couldn't get himself out of the jam.
Jacob Heyward just kept on keeping on, with another double, a walk and a SB. And 29th rounder Michael Bernal kept up an excellent AZL season himself with his 2nd HR. The SS from Arkansas is putting up a healthy .525 SLG. Just behind him is the 22nd round choice, 19 year old Malique Ziegler out of North Iowa CC with a .500 SLG though in just 22 ABs.
