Tyler Beede got the nod to start the Eastern League All Star game for the Western Division team. Quite an honor for Tyler! His single inning of work took a turn for the deja vú, unfortunately. You may recall, that in Beede's very last start he was cruising along in near perfection vs the Reading Fightin' Phils when he suddenly hit a wall in the 5th inning. That start ended when he gave up a two-out, three-run HR to Reading's slugging 1b Rhy Hoskins. And so guess who came up in the 1st inning of the EL All Star game with two outs and two runners aboard?
Yup, it's deja vú all over again. Whatever you're throwing him, Tyler, try something else! The blow launched the Eastern Division team to a 10-2 rout, and along with Ty Blach's poorly timed 5th inning appearance in the AAA All Star game, which the International League won 4-2, gave the Giants' organization a unique distinction:
Congrats to Giants pitchers for losing the MLB, AAA, and AA All-Star Games

Now I see from groug's timeline that this tweet perhaps needs some kind of Public Service Announcement attached, so .... uh...
WARNING: THIS TWEET WAS A JOKE! INVOLVING AMONG OTHER THINGS, THE ABSURDITY OF ASSIGNING PITCHER WINS AND LOSSES IN AN ALL STAR GAME ENVIRONMENT AND SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AS COMPLAINT, CRITICISM, NOR INDICTMENT OF THE GENERAL STATE OF THE GIANTS ORGANIZATION IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM.
There, that ought to do it. But in all, as is always the case with All Star games, a splendid time was had by all.

Well, game 1 in Lancaster got Lancastered up but good. San Jose jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks in part to Jose Vizcaino's 6th HR of the year, part of a four-run 3rd inning. But Jason Forjet got himself into a disastrous eight-run bottom of the inning and though the Giants kept putting runs up they could never quite get the upper hand again. SJ ended up with 14 hits, including six XBH, though they also struck out 11 times and committed four errors. Remarkably, the game reached it's final score of 10-9 in the top of the 5th inning, after which it concluded with four scoreless frames. The top of the 7th was the Giants last good chance to catch up as they opened the inning with consecutive singles from Arenado and Vizcaino, part of multi-hit efforts for both, but they couldn't get the big hit they needed and went down quietly in the 8th and 9th.
Ehire Adrianza finally began his rehab assignment, DHing to begin with. Adrianza finished with a bloop double and a Sac Fly.
No video in Lancaster so we'll just have to do some creative imagining.

The Greenjackets opened the series in West Virginia getting shut out in back to back games, just their 4th and 5th shutouts of the year (though, ironically, it's the second time this year when they've had two straight shutouts). They ran into two good arms in the first two days of the series, with Mitch Keller shutting them down today. Keller started the year as the Pirates #16 prospect in BA's list but when they put up the midseason re-ranking for Pittsburgh I'd guess he'll jump up into their top 5, as he's having a terrific year. Keller limited Augusta to just two hits, both coming from Shawon Dunston, Jr. It was the first time the Power had posted consecutive shutouts since May of 2010.
Perhaps even more unusual than the back to back shutouts is the fact that both of them involved Miguel Gomez going hitless. That's just the second time this year that Gomez has failed to register a hit in two straight games.
The shutout wasted a fantastic outing from Cory Taylor, who continues to be a revelation in his full-season debut. Taylor equalled his career best with 9 Ks, a career best that was set just two starts ago. Errors from Miguel Gomez and Lucius Fox (his 28th of the year) hurt his line a bit, but maybe they were just surprised to see batters put the ball in play. Taylor K'd nearly half of the 22 batters he faced in the game.

And now for the broken record portion of today's post: Mac Marshall walked the entire world, threw pitches wildly, surrendered batches of runs. Man, I need to make a macro for that. Marshall makes Kyle Crick's control problems look like child's play. And the crazy thing is Marshall's not a big velocity kid. The Giants have to be sincerely puzzled as to what has gone wrong with the lefty's delivery since he showed up in Scottsdale.
The offense certainly did their part, putting 18 runners on base. The team jumped out to a 3-1 lead thanks to Heath Quinn's two-run double. And after Marshall's outing put them behind, a four-run 7th inning momentarily put them back ahead again before Carlos Diaz and Nolan Riggs immediately combined to lose that lead too. Geraldo, Reynolds, Quinn, and Riley all reached base at least three times, though for all the accomplishment came with a little pain. Reynolds, Quinn, and Riley were all victims of HBP and Geraldo had to leave in the 8th for a PR after tweaking his leg or foot.
Riley is having himself a nice bounceback year. The now 22 year old is back to Catching and, although it's not a large sample size (61 PA) he's doing an excellent job cutting his K's down. His K% in the NWL last year was 28% and his career rate is over 30%, but so far this year he has it down to a manageable 19% which is not too bad. If he develops on the defensive side, there's enough pop in the bat for him to be able to advance. The system could use more Catcher depth in full season ball.

After Julio Benitez gave up a tie-breaking two run HR in the top of the 8th (the 3rd HR the Giants allowed in the game), Jacob Heyward and Sandro Fabian hit back to back run scoring doubles in the bottom of the 8th to help send the game to extra innings. But Reagan Bazar ran into all sorts of trouble in the 10th. He gave up a leadoff double and then a bunt single that brought a run in when OF-playing-3b Nick Hill threw the ball away. That seemed to rattle Bazar who followed with a walk, a WP, and a run-scoring balk before he finally got out of the inning.
DJ Myers threw a solid 5 innings, though he was touched up for two solo HRs, one from the Royals' #16 prospect C Chase Vallot (a 1Supp pick last year) and one from their #28 prospect CF Seuly Matias, who the Royals signed in last year's July 2nd class for $2.25mm. Matias would hit two of the Royals three HRs in the game.

Wow, so... lots of L's today! Not a single W on US soil even counting the All Star games. Tough hump day! Everybody's back in action tonight and a double header in Lancaster so there's plenty of opportunities to get things turned around tonight. Happy Bickford Day! Don't let the jetstream get to you, Phil!
Scheduled Starters:
Sacramento: Clayton Blackburn vs TBD
Richmond: TBD vs. John Means (that TBD is killing me, because I'm going if it's Coonrod but they won't list it!)
San Jose: Phil Bickford vs. Rogelio Armenteros and Jordan Johnson vs. Trent Thorton
Augusta: Dom Mazza vs. Dario Agrazal
SK: Victor Concepcion vs. Luke Lanphere
AZL and DSL: TBD
