After getting cuffed around pretty badly for much of June, Joan Gregorio seems to have righted the PCL ship a bit, as he's now had back to back one-run starts this week. Following up on Sunday's 7 IP, one-run 7 K outing, Gregorio matched a season high with 8 Ks in 6 one-run innings. Gregorio walked his first two batters of the game, prompting a quick visit from the coach, but then he righted himself and got out of the inning before breezing through the rest of his start. These last two home starts have been a very encouraging return to his April form. Now in his second option year, Gregorio needs to develop quickly to get to the point where he can contribute before his options run out (which, of course, puts him high on a list of potential trade options for the Giants as we move into the silly season of July).
Lines like .000/.750/.000 and .500/.500/.500 can mean only one thing: debuts! And we've got a ton of them today. Ali Castillo just kept right on hitting in AAA and Chris Denorfia showed himself to be the craft old vet he is in their Sacramento debuts. For Castillo it was his PCL debut though he did spend a solid chunk of last year in the other AAA league, the International.
But it was the lines of a couple of the RiverCats' vets that made the difference in this game. Gorkys Hernandez finished out a torrid month of June in which he hit .366/.440/.515 by picking up two more hits including an RBI double and scoring two runs. If not for the 40 man complications, you'd really have to wonder if Gorkys, an outstanding defender, isn't playing himself into the mix for some time in San Francisco.
Andrew Susac, on the other hand, had a June he'd really like to forget but he ended it well, ripping two doubles of his own. Susac is now the lone position player on the 40 man roster who isn't in SF. It sure would be good to see a healthy looking Susac again. He's been impacting the ball a little more regularly lately, so perhaps it's coming.

The new recruits brought the excitement, but once again it was a couple of vets of provided the thrills. Hunter Cole and Jeff Arnold each hit two-run HRs in a four run explosion in the 2nd inning that pushed Richmond out to a big lead, but that was just about all the offense the Squirrels would muster as they'd get just two hits the rest of the way (including Steven Duggar's RBI double). Cole is suddenly an extra-base machine. He has 29 XBH on the season and he's hit 11 of them in his last 11 games, and 17 of them have come since June 5.
Unfortunately, the Squirrels 4-1 lead didn't make it through the bottom of the 2nd, as Kyle Crick allowed four runs of his own in the bottom of the inning. NOT a shutdown inning! He gave up a solo HR to the first batter of the inning and then walked two straight. Two run scoring singles and a Sac Fly and Richmond suddenly trailed again.
Crick's third AA season has been his worst thus far by nearly any way of looking at it. His ERA has ballooned, he's not striking batters out, the walks are still high and his velocity is down (possibly from intent). Troubled times for sure, for the former 1st round pick who just can't harness his stuff.
And a final note, the EL named it's All Star rosters yesterday and the Squirrels were well represented (though it's a little surprising they didn't want Ray Black's 100 mph smoke at the event):

Speaking of troubled times, the San Jose starting rotation has busted a gasket. For the second straight night, the Giants' starter surrendered 8 runs, and Mark Reyes managed in in less than three innings. In the eight games since the All Star break that weren't started by Phil Bickford, the Giants have not gotten a single quality start. In fact, in none of those eight starts has a pitcher made it past the 5 inning and only once did the starter surrender fewer than four runs. Just a brutal stretch for the rotation.
Dylan Davis provided the best of the night's debuts, as he celebrated his return to the Cal League by hitting his first HR in two weeks. Davis had a short, unhappy stint in the Cal League in 2015 when he hit .206/.295/.318 in a little over 100 PA. Hopefully things go better for him this time. Jonah Arenado also pitched in with his 8th HR of the year and a double as well. With Chris Shaw gone Arenado takes over as the primary 1b and Jose Vizcaino the everyday 3b. Vizcaino has had a nightmarish 2016, posting just a .646 OPS and piling up the errors in a frightening manner. It's one thing for Lucius Fox to be running the error totals up, but quite another for a 22 year old college vet to have these kind of error totals.
It's going to take awhile for this new San Jose roster to find its way. Right now, what isn't there seems to loom so much larger than what remains behind (non-Bickford category of course).
A little late but want to thank everyone with the @SJGiants for everything you did for me while I was there! Again Thank You!

Hey and speaking of San Jose players who have gone on to better things, I must have one of these bobbleheads! The very very short San Jose career of Madison Bumgarner will be celebrated a week from Sunday and everyone should be there!

"Um, excuse me. EXCUSE ME! Mr. Turner, Mr. Evans. I believe there's been a mistake somewhere. I think maybe you forgot about me in all these transactions! I'd like to present my case for promotion if I may! You see, when I have a bat in my hand, I do this with great regularity..."
"I would appreciate you reconsidering my case if you would. I can be reached at Lake Olmstead Stadium, Augusta, GA. Thank you."
The first place Greenjackets improved to 6-2 in the second half, pounding out 14 hits including two run scoring singles from returning OF Jean Angomas, who carried over his NWL success for one night anyway.
Cory Taylor is now second in the Sally in ERA and has improved his K9 up to one per inning while maintaining a very high ground ball rate with his heavy fastball. Here he is, ending his night in style by striking out the Yankees 2013 2nd round pick Gosuke Katoh.

Melvin Adon was terrific for four innings yesterday, solid (but a victim of some iffy defense) in a 5th and then completely ran off the trail in the 6th leading to an ugly line that doesn't really reflect his effort. Adon was throwing a no-hitter into the 5th inning, and retired 13 of his first 14 hitters, but a long 5th inning seemed to have taken it out of him, and when he went out for the 6th everything fell apart. He surrendered a leadoff single which he moved around quickly to 3b with a balk and a WP, then a run scoring single and a two run HR to end his night. But he showed some tantalizing stuff over those first four innings.
As did his reliever Kendry Melo, the live armed RHP who was twice a six figure signee on the IFA market (ironically, he was initially signed by the Blue Jays, which I suppose gives him some kinship with Tyler Beede and Phil Bickford). After two fairly disastrous seasons in the AZL, Melo is really putting things together in the Volcanoes bullpen.
The offense collected ten hits spread throughout the lineup. Everybody had one, but only Gio Brusa had two. Ashford Fulmer, who had the team's only walk, was the only other member of the lineup to reach base twice.

Atypical game in the desert with just one run scored and only 10 hits in all. Five Giants pitchers, all members of the 2016 draft class, surrendered just four hits in all but two of them were back to back doubles in the 6th inning, providing the Reds with the game's lone run.
Nick Hill seems to be the Tyler Brown of this year's class, as the 26th rounder out of tiny Eckerd College has shown up at the complex league with his hitting shoes attached. Hill has gone 11 for 23 with 4 walks against just 3 Ks. There's no room at the inn in SK's OF, so it looks like Hill gets to spend the summer whomping on the AZL.

So my best guess on some of these. I think that's: Barager, Hill, Bernal, ??(Juan Rodriguez?), Baragar again, Edwards, Medrano, Will Albertson, Edie, Van Horn, Chris Falwell, Van Horn again (turning DP), Beicker, Medrano again making catch, Bernal again at bat, Edie (31), Van Horn (19), Hill (50), Bazar, and Ruotolo.

Ricardo Genoves now has an eight game hitting streak going, during which time he's doubled his season total of doubles (8). He's now just two behind the league leader in two-baggers. Genoves has only had three games this year in which he's failed to reach base safely (out of 20 played). And if all that's not enough, he also picked off a runner at 1b in this game. Pretty impressive debut that kid's putting together.
Jerson Severin has flipped back and forth between starting and relief this year, though ironically he's had longer stints in relief than he has as a starter, and that trend continued here as he failed to get out of the 1st inning. Jorge Labradour had only been a starter but came on in relief here and ironically he delivered a longer appearance than any he'd managed as a starter. The upshot was that neither was particularly effective, yet again, and they put the offense in a bind getting down 6-0 after 4 innings.
