Buster Posey will be the starting catcher for the National League in the 2015 All-Star Game. Let's reflect on what this means.
First, consider that Cardinals fans were voting like lunatics. Royals fans got all the press, but it was more of a Missouri thing. Matt Adams was fourth in the first base voting for the last update, and he tore his quad about a month ago. Jon Jay has been one of the top outfielders, despite being awful. There's a coordinated effort going on in St. Louis, and just because they don't have an Omar Infante to rally against, doesn't mean that they aren't voting up a storm.
Second, consider that of all the Cardinals players, Yadier Molina is a homegrown star who has been around for longer than anyone else on the team. If Cardinals fans were going to go goofy for anyone on the team, it was going to be Molina. And this reflects in the voting, as he got more votes than any other Cardinals player.
What happened, then, was that the world stood up, a collective effort of disparate minds, and said, "No! Yadier Molina is not better than Buster Posey. No! We reject this premise and consider it false. No! There is no catcher better than Buster Posey, and we are offended at the very thought!"
And that's the story of how Buster Posey got voted into the 2015 All-Star Game.
Brandon Crawford finished second in the shortstop voting to Jhonny Peralta, which is annoying, but not absurd. Norichika Aoki fell out of the top three, as his injury almost certainly didn't help him in the voting. None of the other Giants were close enough to the top to be noteworthy.
Posey won, though. The world recognized that he needed to start. The world came together as one to make it happen. Have you ever felt this close to your brothers and sisters? Have you ever felt this kind of peace? You might think that this is a meaningless popularity contest for a boring exhibition game, but ...
...
... well, I don't know how to answer that. Way to take the fun out of it. Still, congratulations, Buster Posey! Let's hope this is the first of five consecutive starts.
