This was an absolutely brutal game for the Sacramento pitching, particularly early. Braulio Lara, a minor league free agent who last pitched in the Tampa Bay organization, hadn't started a game since 2012, but the River Cats have tried him as a starter this year. The results have not been good, as he's had two games where he's been blown out, and the other games have only been average. He got through the first inning with two strikeouts and no runners allowed, but a one-out walk in the second inning was the beginning of his undoing. This was by far his shortest stint of the season. Brett Bochy did not calm things down, although his first inning was marred by two errors sandwiching a single to start the inning, Bochy only let one run come across. Bochy had only allowed one run in his last seven outings, however, so this broke a solid streak of games.
At the plate, though, there were a few signs of life, but not from the top prospects. 31-year old Juan Ciriaco (who's batting .194 with a .472 OPS this season) had the biggest hit for the 'Cats, with a three run homer in the 4th, but it was already too late, with Sacramento down 8-3 after that. Catcher Ben Turner, meanwhile, has been hot since his callus from San Jose. He had a .225/.283/.275 slash line to start the season in 12 games at San Jose, but he's now 4-for-5 in Sacramento. This was his first start in Triple-A. John Bowker got in thanks to a myriad of changes after the fourth inning, and he picked up his fourth double of the season.
Plus, Juan Perez is still playing defense. Here's your highlight of the day:

Tonight, you have a lesson in box score reading. It looks like Jose Casilla had a fine night, looking at the box score, but he was just the final dash on the kerosene of the 7th inning fire that cost the Squirrels this game. First, Matt Lujan had his best start of the season, his first without allowing any runs and doubling his previous strikeout high. But in the 7th, Stephen Johnson gave up a walk and a double (along with a wild pitch) to let New Britain on the board. With two out and a runner on third, Phil McCormick and Tyler Rogers each came in to face one batter, and each walked him, and the bases were loaded for Casilla. Castilla gave up two singles, and a third grounder was turned into a run by an error by third baseman Mitch Delfino on the throw. Oops. But, Casilla didn't allow any of his runs to score, so his ERA is still a pristine 0.77.
On the offensive side, it feels like it was a good day for the struggling Squirrels. They got 14 hits, but could only manage three runs, all coming off the bat of Mac Williamson. Williamson got his second home run of the season, and first since April 21st. And it was a nice blast.
However, all the rest of the hits didn't result in anything. Ricky Oropesa collected his second and third doubles of the year as he got on base three times. Those doubles and the Williamson home run were the only extra-base hits for Richmond. Delfino also managed to be on base three times, picking up his first walk in a week to go with two hits.
For those counting at home, that's now 14 losses in a row for the Squirrels. Oh my...

Jake Smith | 1.0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1.06 |
Well, San Jose has some nice hitting going, so let's start there. The top four spots in the San Jose order combined to go 10-for-21 with a home run and two doubles. The home run was a two-run shot by Ryder Jones in the third, his third of the year, and Jones is batting .313 with a .845 OPS as he's settled down after his hot start. Austin Slater had his second three-hit game in three games, and collected his fourth double. Jesus Galindo got his fifth stolen base as he got on base four times. Deeper in the order, Brian Ragira got his first home run of the year, which will hopefully break him out of his struggles where he's batting just .151 and slugging just .205 on the year.
On the mound, however, the story was not as sweet. Luis Ysla made his fourth start of the year, and while it was his second-longest of the year (he went 5 inning in his first start), he was absolutely pounded. He did manage a season-high in strikeouts (besting a previous high of 4), so that's something? Jake Smith had another decent spot in relief, however. Smith has only allowed three hits and three walks in his last six outings, a total of 11.1 innings.

More wasted offense, and a failed late comeback. Down 11-6 in the ninth, Johneshwy Fargas started a rally with a one-out single, followed by back-to-back triples by Travois Relaford and Seth Harrison. Jonah Arenado singled in a third run, and after getting into second with an error, scored on Andrew Cain's single. However, that would be the end of the rally.
Relaford has quietly put together a nice string of play, getting on base three times for the third time in the last seven games. In addition to his first triple of the year, he also has three doubles in 14 games. Aneroid had his second multi-hit game in three games, and has a .306 batting average with a .839 OPS on the season.
On the pitching side, there's a mixed bag of results. On one hand, there's this tweet about starter Samuel Coonrod:
Coonrod has 7 K through 4 IP, mostly on fastballs. He's adding the occasional slider. FB is 89-93 after the 2nd inning, was 92-95 early.
— David Lee (@David11Lee) May 3, 2015
On the other hand, he gave up five earned runs for the second start in a row. He went deeper into the game than he has all season, but only by one out. For what it's worth, Coonrod did give up two runs in the first inning, but the rest came in the fifth and sixth innings.
Meanwhile, Connor Kaden has been a little snakebit since he had a spot start three appearances ago. He gave up two runs in 4.1 in that start, but has given up four earned runs in each of his subsequent appearances, with six hits and five walks given up between those two appearances in 3.2 innings.
