The Giants signed Ryan Vogelsong last week, but they had a full 40-man roster. The other cleat dropped on Thursday, and infielder/outfielder Chris Dominguez was designated for assignment and removed from the roster.
The move comes the same week that Dominguez was named the best infield arm in the organization, but there's a strong chance that the 28-year-old clears waivers and returns to the Giants. Dominguez is a career .278/.312/.446 hitter in just over 1,200 Triple-A plate appearances.
These posts always make me a little ghoulish, considering there's a fair possibility that Dominguez will never get on a major league roster again. Still, when you consider the thousands of players who never reach the majors at all, at least this video exists:
Seventeen plate appearances. One hit. The hit was a home run hit into the ozone. Sometimes prospects aren't that mysterious at all. That's exactly what a lot of us would have predicted his possible career might look like.
Remember, though, that there was a slight possibility Dominguez was going to make the postseason roster as a fifth outfielder. Before you react with skepticism, remember that you would have thought he was more likely to do so than Travis Ishikawa from about 2011 through September, 2014.
What a weird game. Best of luck, Chris Dominguez.
