Word Cup Thread 4: The Return of Michael Bradley

A thread overdue. Algeria is well on their way to putting themselves close to the knockout stage. So, good for them, I guess. I don't know. Is there any reason not to like Algeria? I don't really know anything about the country or the soccer team. In fact, this World Cup has made me significantly more aware of both. So, good for them again, I suppose. I'm sure they would be pleased by my slightly improved awareness.

Korea just scored. We'll see how this goes.

More important, though: US kicks off the 3 p.m. PST. The possibilities for the game are literally countless, but I will count three of them for you:

ELATION:
The US defeats Portugal, securing a spot in the knockout round.

DEATH OF THE SOUL:
The US is defeated by Portugal, all but eliminating the team from a knockout stage appearance. Though this result does not eliminate the US outright, it does the team no good, while dealing considerable harm.

LIMBO:
In the case of a draw, everybody will walk under progressively lower bars until eventually a champion is crowned. This will have no bearing on the group standings, but we will have finally answered the long unanswered question of how low all of us can go. As for the US, this is not a favorable result, exactly, but leaves the team with a clear goal differential advantage for the second spot in the group heading into a game against Germany that may not bode well for the US goal differential. We will feel optimistic, but also hopeless. It will be awful.

Please win today, US.
