MLB Draft 2014: Giants take Grant Holmes in pair of mock drafts

Reid Compton-USA TODAY Sports

There's a consensus! Nothing can possiblie go wrong.

The last time we met, we talked about Jeff Hoffman, the brilliant and broken pitcher from East Carolina University. The time before that, we checked in with Keith Law, who had the Giants taking high school right-hander Grant Holmes. Law has a new mock draft up here. His pick for the Giants?

Grant Holmes
SCHOOL: Conway (S.C.) HS
HT: 6-2
WT: 200
POS: RHP

Law also hears that Hoffman and Tyler Beede, previous Baseball America mock-draftees, are also being considered by the Giants. Over at MLB.com, Jim Callis is thinking the same thing as Law:

14. Giants: Grant Holmes, RHP, Conway (S.C.) HS Holmes has more polish and comparable stuff than fellow high school right-handers Kolek and Toussaint, and San Francisco has had success with smaller, live-armed righties (see Lincecum, Tim). The Giants also could go for Beede or Reid-Foley, and they're a possible destination for the two first-rounders with the most helium right now, Elk Grove (Calif.) High outfielder Derek Hill and Virginia right-hander Nick Howard.

This reminds me of the 2007 draft, when every mock draft was Beau Mills, Beau Mills, Jarrod Parker, Beau Mills, Jarrod Parker, Phillippe Aumont, and Beau Mills. Then the Giants picked some unknown lefty out of high school, and everything was ruined.

As of right now, the Giants are supposedly keen on a high school rightie who's a little undersized, but still mighty impressive. I'll talk my way into just about anyone, of course; I'm pretty good at playing the ignorant toadie. But of all the videos and writeups, Holmes is the potential pick who interests me the most so far. That is, I like watching him pitch the most.

I'm basically ignoring the hitters, even though that's where the Giants have gone the last two drafts. Is that weird? Feels like that shows my bias more than the Giants' bias. (But they're probably taking a pitcher. Just a hunch.)
