The Ninth Annual McCoven Awards: Conclusion

It was another great year on McCovey Chronicles. Memes were created. Newcomers were welcomed. Trolls were fought. Hank Schulman was lol'd at.

Oh yeah, something something Giants something something World Series something something. That wasn't really important.

Nevertheless, it has come that time of year again when we must immortalize the best that this fair website has to offer in a process that the scholars of yore once called the "McCoven Awards." Your winners are:

Alex_Lewis Memorial Spirit Award: Roger

For the most part, I hang around open threads and GDTs when I'm here on McC. I do not know much about MiLB, and I don't really participate in debates and threads on the topic. Maybe, then, I am not the most qualified person to talk about Roger. However, I can say that based off the little I have interacted with him, that his thoughtfulness, rationality, and devotion all contribute to his presence on McCovey Chronicles. She who nominated him, Tortured, said that "he keeps us informed and at peace." On a baseball site, one whose posters can get a bit hot-headed at times, this combination of reasonable opinions presented with such composure makes Roger, and his impact on McCovey Chronicles, stand out.

Most Informative Poster: garbanzo24

As many of you might know, garbanzo is a college student at UC Berkeley, fairly young when it comes to this website. He also happens to be one of the smartest, most informed posters on McCovey Chronicles. As a fellow college student, his knowledge of numbers and sabermetrics astounds me. I can't even imagine what goes into the creation of a system like BEANS. His various debates with posters like owlcroft (that is who I remember him debating the most) has made me more knowledgeable about the Giants and baseball in general. Garbanzo has made an indelible impact on how I think about baseball, and I assume for many others, making him an excellent choice for 2014's most informative poster.

Most Amusing Poster: Hyoton

In spirit with the last McCoven awards, I decided to look at ten random Hyoton posts and see how many I laughed at. Just as last year, I laughed at three out of the ten I looked at. That's good for a .300 batting average. .300 is higher than Barry Bonds's career batting average. Therefore, I can conclude that Hyoton's funny level is higher than Barry's good-at-baseball level. And yet the race was still that close (closest race in McC awards history?). Regardless, Barry Bonds was one of the three greatest baseball players of all time, and Hyoton is better than him, meaning that Hyoton is, at the very least, one of the two funniest people of all time. Science!

Outstanding Newcomer: Retro_grade

When I was thinking of who to nominate for each category, I got stuck at Outstanding Newcomer. Nobody seemed to stand out to me. Of course, I didn't know that Retro_grade was a newcomer. Not only is he/she (sorry I don't know your gender, buddy) new, but he/she is VERY new, having joined on October 25, 2014, just a few days before TGWTWSYA. Somehow, though, Retro_grade managed to make me think that he/she was not a newcomer. That accomplishment is the hallmark of an outstanding newcomer.

Official Guide to Humor

There were a few submissions for best image of 2014. This was the only one that was actually made in 2014. Hooray for defaults!

Regardless, this image is deserving of the award. Many people express confusion over what the nuances between the expressions/internet acronyms "LOL," "LMAFO," and "LG1B (lol! good 1 bro)" mean. This easy-to-understand chart helps clarify when to use each expression, and hopefully allows the rest of us to understand aved24 just a bit better.

Best GIF: Belt's Big Hit, by MLB.com

Belt

Game 2 of the 2014 NLCS went 18 innings, as you may or may not recall. It was a nervewracking game. Yusmeiro Petit, called upon for six Herculean innings, has had problems with the dingerball in the past. One of them dingers either way would have spelled certain or near-certain defeat for the other team.

Boy, did Brandon Belt ever hit a dinger.

Best Meme: Literally Travis Ishikawa

Once more, I ask upon you to remember all the way back to the very depths of your memory. This time, to game 5 of the NLCS, when, as you may remember, Travis Ishikawa hit a game-, series-, and pennant-winning dingerball. This is the same Travis Ishikawa who was on the Giants in 2010 (another thing you might remember) and bounced around the majors and minors for the next four years, before being signed by the Giants. Upon signing him, Grant wrote that "hopefully, we'll never see him in a Giants uniform again, because that will have meant something went seriously wrong with the major league roster." Then, he hit one of the, if not the biggest home runs in San Francisco Giants history.

Literally Travis Ishikawa. This danged sport. This danged year.
