Giants/Mets series preview

The Star-Ledger-US PRESSWIRE

The Giants are in the Big Apple to face the New York Wheelers, who have been wheeling and wheeling, wheeling and wheeling, until they were wheeler than the next guy, which is to say, quite wheeler. Say, you'll never guess who's starting the first game for the Mets …

When is this going to pass? Either until Wheeler is released after four 20-loss seasons, or until Kyle Crick wins the World Series MVP, I reckon. Until then, all I can think about when I see a Mets uniform is Zack Wheeler. Would the Mets have taken Gary Brown in the deal? I'll bet the Mets would have taken Gary Brown.

Here's why Wheeler stings more than usual for me right now. This is a typical lineup of the Mets this season:

1. Eric Young, Jr.
2. David Murphy
3. David Wright
4. Marlon Byrd
5. Petey Satin
6. John Buck
7. Herman Recker
8. Omar Quintanilla

The Baseball-Reference.com lineup page just lists last names, so I'm not sure about the first names of #5 and #7. I'm on a need-to-know basis with the Mets, and so far, the need hasn't come up.

There are other players the Mets work in, like Lucas Duda, Juan Lagares, Dack den Dekker, and Scarborough Lutz, but those are the most frequent hitters for each lineup position up there. No hitter has hit cleanup for the Mets more than Marlon Byrd, and no hitter has hit more in the #5 hole than Chance Satin. Et cetera.

Wright is having a great season. Byrd was one of the biggest surprises in baseball before he was traded to the Pirates. But, still, look at those names. When you think of a 90-loss team, you're thinking of a lineup like that. Omar Quintanilla was an A's prospect 16 years ago or so. I'm not entirely sure, but I'm thinking the defense is pretty clanky (other than Wright and, when he plays, Lagares). There's enough pitching to keep them closer to .500 than 100 losses,

The Mets are just a game-and-a-half behind the Giants for the season. The Giants' pitching has been the Satin/Buck/Recker of pitching. I guess that means Yusmeiro Petit is like Quintanilla hitting .350 with a four-homer game, but stay with me. The Giants have had injuries, sure, but it still stuns me to think a team that runs Pagan/Scutaro/Belt/Posey/Pence/Sandoval out in the first six slots can be this bad.

That's because of the pitching. Which is why I'll perseverate on Zack Wheeler until someone gets a court order and makes me stop.

Next year should be different. I still trust Matt Cain. Bumgarner is still amazing. Even if Ryan Vogelsong is merely decent, that's still a good start to a rotation. Two free agents later, and the Giants will good again, he said out loud, hoping he really believed it. And maybe then, I won't be thinking about Wheeler every time the Mets come up.

Do you still think about us, Zack?

The Mets and Giants don't really do so well with the whole "getting people to step on a white pentagon after running in a diamond-shaped route for 360 feet" thing.

Also, the Giants have scored just seven more runs than the Mets, despite having 25 points of batting average, 14 points of OBP, and 11 points of SLG on them.

Man, this season is weird.

I don't know, you can watch Ike Davis if you really want.

Pitcher to watch
Zack Wheeler is a prospect for the Mets in his rookie season. He has outstanding stuff! Check him out if you get a chance.

I wonder if Mets fans are feeling the same kind of regret and envy about Yusmeiro Petit. Probably.

Prediction
If the Giants lose, there will be mentions made of the 2014 Rule 4 Draft and the order in which teams will select amateur players.
