So this season sucks, and a good way to avoid it is to talk about next season, which hopefully won't suck quite as much. With the minor league season wrapping up soon, no playoffs on the horizon for the big Giants, and literal weeks until the CPL, we need something to fill the time.
The scenario: we, collectively, are the Giants' front office. We have to come together to fix the team, from offering QOs, protecting players from the Rule 5 draft, signing free agents, and making trades. For the purposes of this exercise, assume it's the offseason and there aren't restrictions on free agents or trades.
I'll be putting up a new post every week with the results of the previous week's decisions. Since this is a new project, there may be tweaks based on how things go. Notably, players can be up for DFA or trade in any post. I'll give examples in the comments section where the voting will take place.
First up is options, qualifying offers, and the Rule 5 draft; this is a good way to figure out how open our 40-man roster will be. The following players are under team control for next year, and it's assumed they will be staying with the team:
That is 30 players. The following players are currently on the 40-man and are impending free agents:
I will assume that only Lincecum and Pence are potential qualifying offers. The following players are currently on the 40-man and have options:
Vogelsong (1 year, $6.5M, $0.3M buyout)
Zito (1 year, $18M, $7M buyout)
The following players are currently on the 40-man, are not potential free agents, and appear to be in limbo:
That adds another three players to the 40-man. Assume there are currently 7 open spots on the 40-man (six free agents, two options, but Torres is on the 60-day so he doesn't take a spot). This post will cover:
Rule 5 protection
DFA (if necessary)
Please vote in the poll and comments section (via rec) below. The most popular decisions will be enacted and reflected in the next post.
If there's anyone I missed, or suggestions you have, please mention them.
Edit: So I forgot you can't rec your own comments anymore. In the examples below, please reply to the player you nominate with ONLY the option you want; that will prevent the nominator from voting for both sides. If someone else wants to choose the other option, propose it by replying to the nomination comment. This will balance the count.
