minor lines, 8/25/13

Sunday highlights from the Giants' farm: the four full-season starts Eric Surkamp, Edwin Escobar, Jason Forjet and Joe Kurrasch combined for 3 R in 26.1 IP.

AAA: Fresno defeated Las Vegas 4-1

Fresno: 1B Johnny Monell: 3 for 4, 2 2B, BB
Fresno: 2B Carter Jurica: 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB
Fresno: SS Ydwin Villegas: 2 for 3, 3B, BB

Fresno: SP Eric Surkamp: 8.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Las Vegas: SP Rafael Montero: 5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Although the Grizzlies did not homer, seven of their nine hits did go for extra bases.  Monell led the charge with his 26th and 27th double while reaching base four times.  Reaching base three times each were the middle infielders Jurica and Villegas.

Surkamp had another fine start.  He has allowed 2 R or less in nine of his ten PCL starts this year.  After five straight starts completing seven innings, he raised the ante a bit further with a season-high 8.0 IP.  Montero, a top ten prospect for the Mets who started for the World squad in the Futures Game, had his sixth straight start allowing 2 R or less.

AA: Richmond defeated Altoona 3-0

Richmond: 3B Adam Duvall: 2 for 4, HR
Richmond: RF Jarrett Parker: 1 for 3, HR, BB

Richmond: SP Edwin Escobar: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Richmond: RP Edwin Quirarte: 1.2 IP, 1 K
Richmond: RP Cody Hall: 1.0 IP, 1 K

Duvall and Parker connected for their 15th and 17th HR.

Bouncing back from his last start (2 ER and 3 BB in 0.1 IP), Escobar delivered 6.1 scoreless IP.  He threw 99 pitches (63 strikes).  He has a 2.59 ERA in his nine EL starts.  Quirarte and Hall finished the shutout with 2.2 perfect IP.

A+: San Jose defeated Bakersfield 4-2

San Jose: DH Mac Williamson: 1 for 3, HR, HBP
San Jose: 2B Ryan Cavan: 2 for 4, 2B, 2 SO

San Jose: SP Jason Forjet: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K--1 HB, 1 E
San Jose: RP Chris Marlowe: 1.0 IP, 1 K

Going deep for the fourth time in his last six games, Williamson moved alone into 3rd placed in the Cal League with 24 HRs.  Cavan was the only other Giant to reach base twice.

Forjet had one of his better starts, getting his ERA back below 4.50 after yielding 5 ER in each of his last two appearances.  Marlowe pitched a perfect 8th inning.  Baseball America rated him among the Giants' top twenty prospects entering the year, but he has an ERA close to 4.00 and a K/BB ratio below 2.00.

A-: Augusta defeated Hickory 6-1

Augusta: 3B Mitchell Delfino: 2 for 4, BB

Augusta: SP Joe Kurrasch: 7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 12 K

Delfino had another strong game, extending his hitting streak to seven games.

Kurrasch, the Giants' eighth round selection a year ago, had perhaps the best start of his pro career.  In 7.0 IP, he faced just three batters over the minimum and struck out half (12 of 24) his batters.  The 12 K nearly doubled his previous career high of 7 K.

ssA: Salem-Keizer at Eugene tied 1-1 when suspended in 4th inning
(game is scheduled to be resumed tomorrow)

R: Giants defeated Angels 5-3

Scottsdale: SS Christian Arroyo: 3 for 4, 2B, BB, SO
Scottsdale: 1B Jonathan Jones: 2 for 4, 2 2B, SO

Scottsdale: SP Luis Ysla: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K--1 HR
Scottsdale: RP Dusten Knight: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K

Arroyo has multiple hits in seven of his last ten games, including 8 XBH during that span, raising his SLG closer to .500 despite just 1 HR through 176 AB.  While he hit his 18th double, Jones hit his 8th and 9th doubles.

Ysla allowed more than 2 R for just the second time in his last nine starts.  With 43 K in 31.0 IP, Knight leads all AZL relievers in strikeouts.

DSL: The Gigantes finished their regular season yesterday
(Their first playoff game is tomorrow, hosting the Red Sox.)
