Regarding Sabean and Lincecum

So Tim Lincecum wasn't traded at the deadline, after all. I suspect a lot of us Giants fans are relieved by this, but it begs the question of what will happen at season's end. The best case scenario, and feel free to correct me, is that Tim accepts a qualifying offer to stay on for another year. Worst case is that the team doesn't offer and he walks, and the middle ground is a draft pick.

Not that long ago, there was a question regarding the merits of locking Lincecum into a long term deal despite his struggles last year. I remember specifically a hypothetical 5/$100 million deal. He's been a little better in 2013. I guess I'm wondering whether fans are happy that Sabean was smart enough to take Lincecum to arbitration every year. Do you suppose he suspected Tim's physique would eventually lead to reduced velocity and all that? If Lincecum had signed that deal a year ago, the Giants would be on the hook for, what, another 3/$60?

My basic question is whether Giants fans would have preferred the long term deal to the possibility of seeing #55 in another uniform in 2014. If it's been discussed elsewhere, I apologize, but i just wanted to gauge where others were on this.
