minor lines, 5/3/13

Friday highlight from the Giants' farm: Michael Kickham had 7.1 scoreless IP.

AAA: Fresno lost to Colorado Springs 5-1 (11 innings)

Fresno: 2B Kensuke Tanaka: 2 for 3, SB
Fresno: LF-RF Roger Kieschnick: 1 for 4, 2B, BB, 2 SO
Colorado Springs: LF Greg Golson: 3 for 5, HR, 3B, SO

Fresno: SP Michael Kickham: 7.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K--2 PO
Fresno: RP Heath Hembree: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 K--1 HR
Fresno: RP Mitch Lively: 0.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER
Colorado Springs: SP Chris Volstad: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB< 4 K

Although not in the starting lineup, Tanaka was the lone Grizzly with two hits. He raised his AVG to .384 and had his 6th SB. With his 8th double and a walk, Kieschnick was the only other Grizzly to reach base twice. Golson, a first round selection by the Phillies in 2004 now in the Rockies organization, has generally been noted for his speed, but tonight he showed power at a key moment homering with two outs in the 9th inning to tie the game.

Kickham's sixth start was his most effective so far this year. The 7.1 IP and 8 K were new season highs, and this was his first start with no runs allowed. He shaved nearly two full runs off his ERA, now 6.00. Hembree allowed the tying run in the 9th inning but bounced back with a scoreless 10th inning. Lively allowed hits to five of six batters in the 11th inning. With more than two hits per inning (27 H in 13.0 IP), he has a .415 BAA. Volstad made his third appearance since being optioned to the minors. He threw just 67 pitches (46 strikes) in 6.0 IP.

AA: Richmond lost to Trenton 3-1

Richmond: 2B Joe Panik: 2 for 4, 2B, SO

Richmond: SP Craig Westcott: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K--1 HR, 1 HB

Panik had his 8th double and a single to raise his AVG to .308.

Westcott had a solid but below-average start. After 10 K and 2 BB in his first two starts, he has had just 9 K and 10 BB over his last four starts. He has a 4.55 ERA.

A+: San Jose lost to Rancho Cucamonga 6-3
(allowing three runs in the 8th inning)

San Jose: C Jeff Arnold: 1 for 3, BB, E

San Jose: SP Chris Marlowe: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB,4 K

Arnold was the lone Giant to reach base twice.

The pitch count (79 pitches, 52 strikes) apparently prevented Marlowe from pitching the 6th inning and having a so-called quality start, but he has allowed 1 ER or less in four of five starts, keeping his ERA below 2.00.

A-: Augusta lost to Hagerstown 9-1
(allowing seven insurance runs in the 8th inning)

Augusta: SS Matthew Duffy: 0 for 1, 3 BB, SO, PO
Augusta: 3B Mitchell Delfino: 1 for 4, SO

Augusta: SP Kendry Flores: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K--1 WP
Hagerstown: SP Dixon Anderson: 6.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 7 K

Delfino's single in the 8th inning was the GreenJackets' lone hit. Duffy had three of the GreenJackets' six walks, raising his OBP to .425.

Flores had his second straight start with 0 ER, lowering his ERA to 1.23 after five starts. Anderson, whom the Nationals drafted in the 9th round two years ago out of Cal, took a no-hitter through six innings. He did issue 5 BB, though, after having issued just 3 BB previously this year in 28.0 IP over five starts.
