minor lines, 5/17/13

Friday highlights from the Giants' farm: starters Shane Loux, Craig Westcott, and Joe Biagini combined to allow just 1 ER in 20.1 IP, and Juan Perez and Mitchell Delfino homered while reaching base three times.

AAA: Fresno defeated New Orleans 6-1

Fresno: LF Roger Kieschnick: 2 for 3, 3B, 2B, BB
Fresno: SS Juan Perez: 2 for 3, HR, 2B, BB, SO, SB, 2 E

Fresno: SP Shane Loux: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Kieschnick and Perez each had two hits, including Perez's 7th HR and 8th double and Kieschnick's 5th triple and 12th double. The performances raised Kieschnick's SLG above .550 and Perez's SLG above .500.

Not allowing an earned run for the second time in seven starts, Loux improved his ERA to 3.68. The 4 K were a new season high, but his K/IP ratio remains below 0.50, and his K/BB is now even at 1.00 (15 K and 15 BB in 36.2 IP).

AA: Richmond lost to Altoona 2-1

Richmond: RF Jarrett Parker: 3 for 4, 2B, PO
Richmond: CF Ryan Lollis: 1 for 2, BB

Richmond: SP Craig Westcott: 7.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K--1 HR

Parker had three of the Flying Squirrels' seven hits, with his 8th double being the team's lone XBH. After hitting just .205 in 21 games in May, he has hit .327 in 14 games in May. His season OPS is now above .800. Lollis was the only other Squirrel to reach base twice.

Westcott enjoyed his longest start of the year, completing seven innings for the first time in eight starts. He allowed a solo HR in the 5th inning but otherwise kept the Curve off the scoreboard, lowering his ERA to 3.29. He threw just 79 pitches (51 strikes).

A+: San Jose defeated Rancho Cucamonga 5-3
(after rallying with four runs in the 8th inning)

San Jose: 3B Ryan Cavan: 1 for 4, HR
San Jose: 1B Angel Villalona: 1 for 3, HR, BB, SO

San Jose: SP Kelvin Marte: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K--2 HR, 1 HB
San Jose: RP Bryce Bandilla: 1.0 IP, 3 K
Rancho Cucamonga: SP Garrett Gould: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K

The Giants had just four hits, but that included two big flies driving in all five Giants runs. In the 7th inning, Villalona's 8th HR was a solo shot. In the 8th inning, Cavan's 2nd HR was a grand slam. Villalona was the lone Giant to reach base twice, but his OBP remains below .275.

Making his second start, Marte had a quality start despite allowing a couple solo HRs. Bandilla struck out all three of his batters in the 9th inning for his 1st pro save. Gould, one of the Dodgers' top fifteen prospects, threw 6.0 scoreless IP for the second time in three starts against the Giants. In each of his other six starts this year he has allowed at least 3 ER and so still has an ERA above 6.00.

A-: Augusta defeated Savannah 11-0

Augusta: DH Mitchell Delfino: 2 for 3, HR, BB, CS
Augusta: C Ben Turner: 3 for 4, 3 2B

Augusta: SP Joe Biagini: 7.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K--1 HB

Among the three GreenJackets who reached base three times each were Delfino, whose 3rd HR was a grand slam in the 5th inning, and Turner, who had 3 XBH.

Biagini had his best start of the year, at least from a statistical perspective. He combined with two relievers for a one-hit shutout. The performance brought his ERA just below 5.00.
