Paul "Goldy" Goldschmidt
Goldy is a lumbering 6'3 245lb slugger that's batting .322 on the year with 10 jacks. If he keeps up those numbers, he's a legitimate MVP candidate. Now in his third year with the Arizona Diamondbacks, his batting average has improved each year he's been in the league. He received a 5-year contract extension worth $32 million at the start of the year too. Keep in mind that Goldy was drafted in the 8th round back in 2008, three rounds after Belt.
As for Belt, he's a 6'5 220lb baby giraffe that's batting .248 on the year with 5 jacks. Naturally, AT&T Park diminishes the power numbers, but the lower batting average and lack of plate discipline should concern Giants fans. Whereas Goldy's average has improved each year he's been in the league, Belt's has fluctuated along with his streakiness.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Belt. I just think we ought to have realistic expectations for a guy with over 700 career at-bats under his belt (no pun intended). Does Belt chase? Yes. Does he lack confidence at times? Yes. But he's a good guy, and I don't see an older career 4A guy like Brett Pill replacing him either.
Assuming his numbers don't improve much, my hunch is that he'll play 1st base until he's eligible for arbitration (2015) and/or the Giants move Buster Posey to 1st base. Your thoughts?
