minor lines, 5/15/13

Wednesday highlight from the Giants' farm: Andrew Susac homered and doubled.

AAA: Fresno had a scheduled off-day
(their second of just four scheduled off-days before their all-star break July 15-16)

AA: Richmond defeated Harrisburg 7-6

Richmond: LF Javier Herrera: 1 for 3, BB, HBP, SB
Richmond: 3B Mark Minicozzi: 2 for 4, 2 SO, E
Richmond: 1B Andrew Susac: 2 for 4, HR, 2B, SO
Harrisburg: 3B Anthony Rendon: 1 for 5, HR, SO

Richmond: SP Omar Javier: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K--1 HR--1 HB

Getting the rare start at 1B, Susac hit his 5th HR and 11th double. Snapping a five game hitless streak, he raised his OPS back towards .900 (currently .893). Minicozzi was the lone other Flying Squirrel with two hits, raising his AVG just above .300, but he also committed his 10th error. Herrera reached base three times and had his 10th SB. Rendon, the Nationals' top prospect, connected for his 5th HR.

Making his first start after eleven relief appearances, Javier began with three scoreless frames before allowing a run in both the 4th and 5th innings. The latter run came after he departed the game after 66 pitches (40 strikes) with the bases loaded and two outs in the 5th inning.

A+: San Jose defeated Rancho Cucamonga 4-3

San Jose: LF Shawn Payne: 2 for 5, 2 2B
San Jose: CF Elliott Blair: 2 for 4, BB, CS

San Jose: SP Ty Blach: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 9 K
San Jose: RP Hunter Strickland: 1.0 IP, 2 K
Rancho Cucamonga: SP Ted Lilly: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K--1 HB, 1 PO
Rancho Cucamonga: RP Scott Elbert: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB

Payne, who had his 6th and 7th doubles, and Blair, who reached base three times, combined for four of the Giants' seven hits.

After a career-high 6 K in his previous start, Blach greatly advanced that mark with a new career-high 9 K in his seventh pro start. On the downside, the 3 ER were also a new career-high. He has an outstanding 33/3 K/BB line and 2.27 ERA but has also surrendered quite a few hits with a .295 BAA (46 H in 39.2 IP). Strickland pitched a perfect 9th inning with 2 K for his 7th save. Over his last four appearances, he has 0 H, 0 BB and 8 K in 4.0 IP. The Dodgers' Lilly and Elbert both made their third rehab appearances for the Quakes this year (although Lilly's previous two appearances came during a previous DL stint). The final statistical line was not that impressive for either pitcher.

A-: Augusta defeated Rome 5-4

Augusta: CF Jesus Galindo: 2 for 4, 2B, HBP, SO
Augusta: SS Matthew Duffy: 1 for 3, 2 BB, 2 SB
Rome: SS Jose Pereza: 3 for 4, HR, 2 E

Augusta: SP Chris Stratton: 7.0+ IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K--1 HR
Augusta: RP Brandn Farley: 1.0 IP, 2 K
Rome: SP Mauricio Cabrera: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K

Galindo, the lone GreenJacket with two hits, continues to swing a hot bat. Over his current eight-game hitting streak, he has hit 12 for 29 with 5 XBH and 7 BB. His OBP is now just shy of .400. Duffy was one of two other GreenJackets to reach base three times. Duffy's .423 OBP ranks 6th in the Sally League. Peraza, one of the Braves' top fifteen prospects, connected for his 1st HR among three hits, although the 19-year-old also committed his 11th and 12th errors.

Stratton had his second straight start pitching seven full innings, this time even facing one batter in the 8th inning; but he also allowed a career-high 10 H and matched a season high with 4 ER. He has a 3.38 ERA after seven starts. Farley pitched a perfect 9th inning for his 1st pro save (in 37 appearances). Cabrera, one of the Braves' top ten prospects, had a season-high 9 K. Although he has been tough to hit with a BAA below .200, tonight's performance merely evened his K/BB ratio at 1.00 (with 30 BB and 30 K in 42.1 IP).
