We all know nicknames are a familiar and traditional part of baseball. Sometimes it can even go to some major extremes. Even Abbott and Costello knew just absurd and extreme the art of nicknaming baseball players can go. The Giants are no different. The PR Dept. has made a fortune for the team with all the Panda and Baby Giraffe hats they've sold.
For those unfamiliar with the nicknames of players on the Giants' roster, here's a breakdown:
- Panda - Pablo Sandoval
- Baby Giraffe - Brandon Belt
- The Horse - Matt Cain
- The Bull - Madison Bumgarner
- Great White - Gregor Blanco
- The Reverend - Hunter Pence
- The Freak - Tim Lincecum
There are also some players whose name already is or seems to be a nickname, such as "Buster" and "Angel".
And then there are others whom some of us would LIKE to nickname. I mean, does anybody really think Brandon Crawford, with his beard and hair, is just begging for someone to label him "Wolverine" Well, maybe...though, to me, he probably looks more like Liev Schreiber, who played Wolverine's brother, Victor Creed. I'm sure the Giants' PR people could make something of that.
Nicknames are a fun part of the traditions of baseball. And I love that the Giants and Giants' fans (who are some of the best in all sport) are embracing that tradition fully.
