Farewell, Candlestick

So Monday's 49ers game vs the Falcons is most likely the very last game that will be played at Candlestick Park. The former home of our beloved Giants and the current home of the 49ers for the next month or so, barring any miracles this will be the final game played there. It was a dump pretty much from Day 1 but it was a dump where legends played. This was a place where history happened pretty much all the time. The Beatles played their final concert at Candlestick. Juan Marichal hit John Roseboro with a bat there. Gaylord Perry and Ray Sadecki pitched back to back no-hitters at the Stick. Then of course the Niners dynasty had a multitude of big moments there starting with The Catch in January of '82 and all the others that came after it. For myself, my Candlestick memories are mostly baseball related, though I did go to some significant 49ers games. I can remember my brother and I having to plead with my Grandpa to not leave the game early back in April of '93 when the Giants played an epic game vs the Braves where the Giants gave up 5 runs in the first inning and ended up coming back to win in extra innings on a 3 run HR by Matt Williams. I was at the Monday Night Football game vs the NY Giants when Bryant Young's leg got shattered when it collided with Ken Norton Jr's helmet. And my family all went as a group to the final night and day game at the Stick in '99 vs the Dodgers. It wasn't the best stadium, but it was our stadium and I will always have plenty of fond memories of spending a large amount of my youth there watching so many of my sports heroes do great things there. Whether it was tailgating with Bubba Paris 5 hours before the Niner game, or hearing the crowd roar after Will Clark hit a 1st inning home run while being stuck on the slow escalator, Candlestick will always hold a special place in my heart. So thanks for the memories, Candlestick! Feel free to share your favorite or worst memories of that concrete toilet known as Candlestick Park. :)
