Corey Hart signs with Mariners, Giants fans spared year of 'Sunglasses at Night' jokes

Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

Giants Lurch closer to Mike Morse deal, pun most definitely intended.

Corey Hart went to the Mariners on Wednesday, agreeing to a one-year, $5 million deal with incentives that could push it up to $13 million. Take another option off the dry-erase board you hung in the bathroom at work, for whatever reason.

The deal makes sense for the Mariners, who needed a first baseman more than an outfielder. Then they traded for Logan Morrison, who isn't really either of those, so I'm not entirely sure what they're doing. Still, a one-year deal loaded with incentives for Hart was just about the last palatable option for the Giants on the open market. Now it's trade or bust if the Giants want sweet, sweet dingers. Trade or bust or Morse. Gulp.

If the Giants were really unwilling to play Belt in left, I'm not sure how much sense Hart made. He's a poor defender who had microfracture surgery on his right knee last year, which is no joke. He was a good buy-low candidate for a team in need of a 1B or DH. Not so sure about him in LF, though. Neither were the Giants, apparently.

Hold on, though. These Winter Meetings might get interesting yet.

Hoping to be surprised with a name I haven't thought of. Not expecting a name I haven't thought of. Expecting De Aza if there's a trade. That would be ... that would be a baseball transaction, alright.
