Melky Cabrera Asks Not to Win Batting Title He Will Win

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Melky Cabrera will not win the batting title that he will win.

Melky Cabrera will win the batting title. Melky Cabrera has asked not to win the batting title. So Melky Cabrera will not win the batting title he will win. I hope this clears things up for you.

This is a non-story to end all non-stories. I never cared about Melky Cabrera winning the batting title. Well, maybe a little. It was sort of embarrassing. But not enough to think about it for more than a few seconds. And Melky is isn't doing some magnanimous gesture out of the bottom of his heart. He's trying to make good with someone, somewhere. Teams in the offseason? The Giants for the postseason? Whatever. I guess it's a nice enough gesture, even if it's calculated.

I saw a lot of the arguments with this had to do with a slippery slope -- if one player asks the union to allow the rules to be changed retroactively, that sets a precedent for other rules to be changed retroactively. Maybe. But I think this was a case of a player asking for something that no one was really against. No one was rooting for Melky to win the batting title. This sets a precedent for more things that no one is against. Which, well, no one will be against.

The important part is that Buster Posey has a chance to win the batting crown and ... dammit, are we talking about batting average? What is wrong with us? Is it 1986? That's enough of that.

Here's some important news:

San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey was selected winner of the 2012 "Willie Mac" Award, the club announced today.

I always said he had a chance to be the next Kirt Manwaring. Here's your proof.
