Do the 2013 Giants have enough payroll to re-sign Melky?

This was going to be a post in the other thread about 2013 Free Agents, but it got way too long.

Here's a look at Giants salaries in 2013 according to Cot's:

(1) Contracts set in stone:

Zito, Timmy, Matt (holy $63M batman!)

Huff, Lopez, Pablo, Vogie, Madbum

Sub-total: $81M, 7 total players, assuming Huff's gone.

------------------------------------------------

(2) The following players are due arb-raises.

I'm just going to plug in the standard 40/60/80 numbers for everyone except Buster and Wilson. Let's assume Wilson resigns for a multi-year deal with $3M on the books next year. Let's also assume Buster signs a multi-year deal with $7M on the books next year.

Pence: Arb-4 $14M

Wilson: Arb-4 $3M

Casilla: Arb-4 $3M

Romo: Arb-2 $3.1M (!)

Hensley: Arb-3 $1.1M

Posey: Arb-1 $4M

Blanco: Arb-2 $1M (random guess)

Arias: Arb-1 $800k (random guess)

Sub-Total: $33M, 8 players

-------------------------------------------------------------

(3) The following players are still under control for league minimum:

Kontos

Belt

Crawford

Hanchez

Sub-Total: $2M, 4 players.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Grand-total of controlled players:

$113M, 19 players.

Let's assume a modest budget increase to $135M.

--------------------------------------------------------------

That leaves $23M to fill the following 6 holes:

Starting 2B.

Starting CF.

Starting LF.

7th bullpen arm.

UT IF 1.

Super-UT/PH-guy.

1) Bullpen arm: Mijares

I'm not sure about Mijares' status. He entered the league in 2002, but only has 3 years service time, and was signed last year as a free agent. The Giants might let Affeldt walk and keep Mijares as 2nd loogy, filling the 7th bullpen slot. If so, I'd estimate around $1-1.5M for him.

2) 2B: Scutaro

Scutaro has declined from his previous production. They may be able to keep him around for $5M.

3) CF: Blanco/Brown?

Let's plug-in Blanco as the leadoff CF. That pushes the opening to 4th OF. Let's assume they decide to go in-house with either RogerK or Christian. The other option might be Brown takes the starting CF with a great spring.$500k

4) UT IF? They won't get a free agent for anything less than $2M, so they decide to go in-house with Noonan. (ugh). $500k. The risk here is obviously accumulating large amounts of negative WAR due to starter injuries like the past two years.

5) Super-UT/PH? That's another in-house AAAA player: Pill or Gillespie or Manny. Yech. $500k. Same risk as above.

6) That leaves $14M open with which to pay Melky in the first year of a multi-year deal. Feasible? Yes. Likely? I don't know.

Top areas to recover some cash: (1) Posey's contract, (2) Wilson's renogiation, and (3) going cheap for 2B like this year.
