Lincecum....the Clue

A fans take….. Timmie, aka, "the Freak", has lost the recipe before. During the Dog Days of Summer in 2010, he had a pretty rough August. Part of it was conditioning, part of it was mechanics, part of it lack of command. Why is Lincecum struggling so much now? My gut tells me to look at Paul Goldschmidt of the Razorbacks. Last September he rolls into town, and just owns Lincecum. Lincecum throws low and in fastballs to Goldschmidt, and he hits them a country mile. For whatever reason, some hitters just feast on certain pitchers. Punch and Judy hitters, can just rake off of a top line pitcher, if they just "see" them well. I’m not saying Goldschmidt is a Punch and Judy pitcher, but I think Goldschmidt got into Lincecum’s head. Last Summer, Goldschmidt lights up Timmie, and then in April, he lights him up again. What happened to Lincecum, in my opinion, is he just won’t throw fastballs much, in the strike zone, once he has two strikes on a batter. He’ll show a batter a Fastball. He’ll throw one across the letters to get a batter to chase. He’ll throw one off the corner to get them to chase, but he won’t throw one in the zone. Hitters know this, and are just looking for off speed pitches with two strikes. Yes, Lincecum has made a lot of location mistakes with two strikes up, but I still see batters hitting pretty good offspeed pitches with decent location, because they are looking for them. Lincecum, has to use the fastball more. Show the batter an offspeed pitch with two strikes, then, throw a strike with the fastball. A good location fastball, but a strike. My 2 cents, and you’ve heard it before, but I say, "it was Goldschmidt, in the parlor, with the candlestick".
