I got to thinking about the players from the past who I'd love to have seen playing in their prime. This isn't a list of who I think are the all-time greatest at their positions...but these are the guys I'd want to catch if I had access to a working time machine. I'm interested to hear everyone else's selections. You can't vote for someone you actually have seen, so I suppose if you're older, your pool is a little shallower. I'll be 29 later this summer; my earliest baseball memory is of my dad pulling me out of kindergarten class one afternoon to go see a game at the 'Stick. We sat in the RF pavilion...don't remember much about the game except that someone hit a homer that landed a few rows in front of us and that the Giants lost to the Padres.
CF: Willie Mays
LF: Babe Ruth
RF: Roberto Clemente
1B: McCovey (I had trouble with this one; Stretch gets the nod since he wore the orange and black)
2B: Jackie Robinson
SS: Honus Wagner
3B: Brooks Robinson
C: Josh Gibson
RHP: Satchel Paige (throwing to his buddy Gibson)
LHP: Sandy Koufax. I hate throwing another Dodger in here, but man, I would have loved to see him pitch. Can't he lose 1-0 to Marichal, as long as we're dreaming?
Honorable mentions: Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, Pistol Pete Reiser, Cool Papa Bell, Joe Dimaggio, Bill Mazeroski, Juan Marichal, Bob Gibson.
