Baseball Prospectus | Reintroducing PECOTA: The Weighting is the Hardest Part
The new PECOTAs are in! This is always a cool day, but it turns out the Giants can't hit. But if you look at the comparables like I spent my morning doing, you might notice some good things. Such as Brandon Crawford's comparable players including former Giant Ivan DeJesus (I'll take it), Serra grad Jim Fregosi (six-time All-Star), and Derek Jeter (Crawford's platoon-mate in 2016). Everything's going to be alright, folks.

Another attempt by Grant to give some meaning or excitement to the site
during the off-off season. Face it he’s got nothin’ today. So he’s doing the great white father schtick.
So he’s gonna rail about “no politics” and disguise it as anti-politics and the purity of the site. Actually he’s jealous of the attention politics has in the “real” world right now since it has marginally more content.

So out of incredible boredom, I've been doing napkin-math with baseball stats at work
Just playing with stat lines to see how much of an effect a thing like “two more home runs” or “ten less strikeouts” has on a hypothetical stat line.
I think if I end up doing CS when I go back to school, I’m gonna try and make a program for that.

oh, so far mostly that:
-Dingers are good
-Cutting down your strikeouts is more useful than I thought
-You need a super high BABIP to reliably “hit 300”
-My boss doesn’t appreciate my constantly having my phone out
by Lies and Perfidy on Feb 8, 2012 8:47 PM PST up reply actions
Cutting down your strikeouts is more useful than I thought
There are probably a whole lot of caveats to this.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
Well if you put the ball into play ten times where you would have struck out otherwise, you’re going to get three more hits (to drastically simplify the argument) It’s also up to 10 more chances to GIDP, though.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
(to drastically simplify the argument)
That would be where the whole lot of caveats come in. If you’re putting into play 10 balls that were on the edge of the strike zone, chances are pretty bad that you’re going to make great contact with them. Especially 3-2. In a 3-2 count, ceteris paribus, you’re better off taking a borderline pitch than swinging.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
It depends on how much you credit pitchers with controlling quality of contact. (How topical!). But you could probably do an analysis of percentage of strikeouts looking vs. swinging, batted ball type, and so on to give you a clearer picture.
My hunch is that in the abstract, fewer strikeouts has a positive correlation with results.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
In retrospect, I guess that’s kind of a ‘no-duh’ proposition. What I mean to say is that strikeouts correlate with good contact. My thinking is that someone who can at least get the bat on the ball has better bat control than someone who would whiff entirely.
There’s also the matter of fouling off pitches.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
What I mean to say is that strikeouts correlate with good contact.
Perhaps—though there are a fair number of players like Manny Burriss and Keppinger who don’t strike out a lot but don’t make “good contact” in my mind. I’m sure that someone’s looked at correlations between BABIP and K% (probably in xBABIP articles)—I’ll see if I can find anything.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
A quick list of K% leaders from 2009-2011 doesn't bear up any correlation
Juan Pierre, Jeff Keppinger, Placido Polanco, David Eckstein, and wRC+ leader Albert Callaspo, with 99!
BB/K is a different story, of course. Fucking Pujols.
by Lies and Perfidy on Feb 8, 2012 9:10 PM PST up reply actions
BABIP is average to below-average, too.
So much for that.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Yeah, there's no correlation between BB/K and BABIP either

This really doesn’t surprise me.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
In retrospect.
I guess if the Eckstein-y types had above average BABIPs, they’d be way better hitters.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Here we go
Moneyshot from the article I was looking for:
As mentioned above, all of our key independent variables are statistically significant at the 1 percent level. That is to say, there is virtually no chance that the effects reflected in this model are the product of random chance. Our regression results show positive effects for hitter’s eye, line drive percentage, speed score and pitches per plate appearance, all of which conform to common sense. On the other hand, we find negative coefficients on pitches per extra-base hit, fly ball/ground ball ratio, spray and contact rate.
One might expect a higher contact rate to lead to a higher BABIP, but the opposite actually seems to be the case. This is likely caused by the correlation between strikeouts and power, since players who swing hard tend to either miss entirely or crush the ball for hits
So almost certainly, ceteris paribus, lower strikeouts = higher BABIP. But it’s not ceteris paribus, and because of the confounding factor, it’s actually anticorrelated.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
Actually, ceteris paribus, wouldn’t lower strikeouts = the same BABIP? If you have a BABIP of .300, you strike out 10 less times, 3 balls are put in play, so your new BABIP is……….. .300
Actually, if one of those hits is a home run, you then add 2/9 into your current BABIP which would lower your BABIP.
Am I thinking about this incorrectly?
by GuyWhiteyCorngood on Feb 9, 2012 8:51 AM PST up reply actions
sorry, meant to say
you strike out 10 less times, 10 more balls are put in play, 3 falling for hits
instead of
you strike out 10 less times, 3 balls are put in play
by GuyWhiteyCorngood on Feb 9, 2012 8:52 AM PST up reply actions
I think the general idea that we were discussing was that it’s possible that striking out is correlated with not making good contact, and therefore that striking out less might equate to making good contact more often, and therefore a higher BABIP.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
yeah
There was a great article linked on the BN front page recently about Colby Rasmus’s struggles and why his low BABIP isn’t just “bad luck,” that throws into high relief just how abstract beginner SABR can be.
by Lies and Perfidy on Feb 8, 2012 9:03 PM PST up reply actions
Oh sure, this is entirely abstract
I just always underrated it by a little. You get a decent chunk of OBP by keeping a guy’s BABIP and BB% the same but dropping his Ks by a reasonable amount.
by Lies and Perfidy on Feb 8, 2012 8:59 PM PST up reply actions
which is really obvious, of course

WOW, and this is one of the better engineering schools. Well, you’ve seen The Ides of March? They filmed a bit of it there at Hall, and yea, i saw one of the Kennedy’s speak there, and Drew Rosenhaus.
Woa wait, what about Bishop Circle?
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker

Supposedly the reason there are woods in Bishop Circle is that it drains the surrounding portions of campus and it would be rather difficult to build a building there which didn’t leak. Other films shot at MU were Little Man Tate (Upham) and Rain Man (the Oxford area). No engineering but bit and pieces like Paper Science. The needs of Proctor and Gamble can not be overestimated.

If you (I think, been a while) double press and hold as it pulls you to your target, you will both go faster and instead of grabbing the ledge will be catapulted over it and you can continue gliding. Good for traveling quickly. It may also extend the range on your grapnel, I can’t quite remember.

I'm obviously biased and somewhat of a hypocrite. . .
. . .when I talk about Tebow and Lin. I really want Lin to succeed because people always say that the only Asian that dominated in the NBA was due to his size. That really bothered me. You wouldn’t be able to say that about a point guard.
Then again, with Tebow, I don’t really care if he is successful or not but I did not pray for him to fail like many have.
If Timmy played for the Yankees, would we all hate him? “LOL THE FREAK? ONLY IN NEW YORK, HE’D JUST BE A POTHEAD HERE IN SF.” I don’t know if I could see myself thinking about Timmy like that. I mean I still liked Pedro Martinez even after threw that old Yankee coach onto the ground. I liked Martinez because he was dominant. I don’t really like Tebow because he gets all the attention when he hasn’t done much in the NFL. W/ that said, he did deserve the attention in college when he was arguably the most successful player in college football.
So as long as Lin succeeds, the media won’t bother me. If he starts sucking, then I guess I could get tired. It’s all about the performance.
There's a First for Everything:
Edgar Renteria, The First World Series MVP in Giants History.
Oh i definitely understand… with Tebow i didn’t care if he did well or not, kinda wanted him to prove the doubters wrong, and he sort of did, but regardless, don’t really care.
Of course with Timmy, i wouldn’t think he’s an ass if he played for the Yankees at all…
What we need to do and what i’m trying to do now is watch the game and let the game speak for itself instead of having ESPN go crazy when someone does something well after one or two games. I don’t hate Tebow because he’s not really bringing any of it on himself, he can do whatever he wants in the endzone, and if that’s what he’s been doing for the last however many years, then all to him if he scores.

I mean, in a time where there are still dumb jokes at the expense of Asians and stereotypical depictions in the media (this was a Super Bowl ad, for criminy’s sake), there’s a positive Asian-American story in the spotlight. Yea, that’s probably a good comparison actually. And this is a perfect example of showing how hard you worked when given the perfect opportunity.
Steph for Lin!?!?!?! haha, the reasons why i liked Lin were because he was one of the only perimeter players on the team that played DEFENSE, but he had to work on his jumper and not turnover the ball. He was solid other than that. And he’s putting it all together now outside the turnovers, which isn’t BAD considering he’s distributing the ball and isn’t a ball hog, like what Monta+Curry have been at times

Now, that I would not try. My grandfather hated when the rats from the corn field next door would steal his apples, so he now and then he would sit in the yard on sunny days and pick off any rat that tried. He was a very good shot, needless to say. But he immediately had to upgrade from the old bolt-action target rifle he had thought would take care of them: hit a big field rat with a .22 target round and it barely even notices. And that’s a little old rat.

My grandfather was a policeman, his home town in the US zone. When the local Americans decided they were tired of policing that corner of Austria themselves, they took him to a storeroom and told him to pick a few weapons. The ‘30-whatever Luger and PPK are the ones he kept after he retired. The Czech machine pistol he couldn’t, as it was illegal by then.
Now that would have been pretty nifty. He said it was a beautiful gun.

It’s like boar hunting with a compound bow. You shoot the boar with the arrow to get its attention. Your buddy with the rifle had better not miss after that.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
The counselors at my old Boy Sprout camp did that. They had ‘modified’ their rifle to full auto. Their thinking was, put the boar down with a perfect arrow if they could. Fill its evil porcine skull with bullets if they missed.

I consider this to be dishonorable. If you are going to use a gun, just use the gun. If you are going for the bow hunting mystique, hunt with a bow, and perhaps a giant boar spear. If you choose the bow, it would be best if you also had some sort of well-staffed medical facility on hand.

Brown's blurb
Brown is at least a 70 runner who covers a ton of ground in center field and profiles as an above-average regular in the big leagues because of the value he’ll add on defense.
He is one of the fastest right-handed hitters I’ve ever clocked from home to first — the fastest is the prospect at the top of this list — and his hands are very quick, allowing him to stay inside the ball well. But his swing is very linear and he doesn’t let the ball travel, so there’s not much present or future power here. And while he makes a ton of contact he’s never been a high-walk guy to potentially generate .400 OBPs.
He’ll probably end up cast as a leadoff type because of his speed, but I see more of a .300 hitter without great secondary skills who saves 10 runs a year with his glove in center.

If not letting the ball travel is the only reason he doesn’t hit for power that may be something he can change without too much trouble.

% v upside?
Brown is surely a lock to make it to the majors in some capacity, whereas Wheeler has a non-zero probability of flaming out and never even making the majors (TINSTAAP and that), so if you were to multiply the expected career WAR arc for both players against the probability of making it to the majors then would the Giants necessarily be so wrong?
Sundrendy!
It’s honestly about a wash at that point if you were to take the area under the curve/integrate. If you’re risk averse, take Brown. If you’re willing to gamble, Wheeler.
The Giants have shown time and again that they’d rather take the known (s)crappy vet, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that they kept Brown instead of Wheeler.

You guys really should just buy ESPN insider.
When ranking players, I consider scouting reports on players — usually my own, supplementing with conversations with other scouts and front-office executives as needed — as well as performance, adjusted for age and context. I’ve made one adjustment in my ranking philosophy in recent years, favoring higher-upside prospects over lower-ceiling prospects who are closer to the majors. This better reflects how these players are valued now by front offices and scouting departments, and gives me a chance to deliver more information on prospects whose names or scouting reports might be new to you.
The most delightful ecumenical contradiction in nomenclature.
Dursh nerf darsh narf. Poop.
I understand that high-upside goes higher in his lists, but my point was questioning that, if you take into account the supposed volatility of minor league pitching prospects, would their expected career WAR really be that different?
Sundrendy!
If you have a player with a 25% chance of becoming a 6 WAR player and another with a 50% chance of becoming a 3 WAR player, they have the same expected war, but the former (Law says) is more valuable.
I think he’s setting the probability that Wheeler becomes a top-flight pitcher too high, though.
Probably. That said, npv(E[0.25/6, 0.75/0]) > npv(E[0.5/3, 0.5/0]) in baseball. You can only field nine guys at a time.

There’s definitely an upgrade due to the opportunity cost. Tango had a post on it a while ago.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
This has been my second big complaint about Sabean (after his habit of doling out contracts to the likes of Zito and Rowand as if they were Cliff Lee and Matt Kemp): he does not understand that the reason the market appears slightly to undervalue a garden-variety major league ballplayer is that you don’t win with average guys.
by wcw on Feb 9, 2012 7:57 AM PST up reply actions
If I recall, the free-agent market as a whole behaves this way. The rate is a linear $4.5 million (or whatever) per expected WAR, with little or no bump for the superstars. Though perhaps that’s changing.
Market prices are set by the marginal buyer. The marginal buyer of an average FA likely overpays for need.

–If the team does indeed move to San Jose, they will be called the "San Jose A’s," which has been assumed. Wolff pointed out how the franchise has moved from Philadelphia to Kansas City to Oakland, always keeping the "Athletics" label. There was a stuffed Stomper on hand at Wednesday’s event, with the A’s mascot wearing a "San Jose Athletics" uniform.
Wolff was asked about the possibility of the A’s simply buying out the Giants’ territorial rights to San Jose. "That has not been discussed with us," he said

Not really.....
A typical thermometer has ~ 0.5 gms of mercury in it.
If the reported concentration are ~ 0.5 ppm, a quick and dirty calculation : 0.5 gms / 0.5 ppm
leads one to conclude that the typical fish clocks in at around 1,000,000 grams, or roughly 2200 lbs.

Oil Can Actor
The retired Red Sox pitcher has been busy as of late. His autobiography, "They Call Me Oil Can," is scheduled for publication in June. In May, he will be filming his role as pitcher Satchel Paige in a major motion picture about Jackie Robinson, starring Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey, Richard Gere and Chadwick Boseman as Robinson.
Pitching and defense wins championships, but oh those dingerz....

OT: I'm a Affeldtoholic
I like Jeremy Affeldt and I don’t care who knows about it. I cheer for him when he pitches great. I apologize for him when he pitches poorly. My brain tells me the Giants picking up his option was stupid but I immediately started subtracting the 0.5 mil buyout and justifying to myself that this was a smart move (even though it wasn’t).
What’s weird is I don’t know why I’m such a fan. I’m not a born-again christian and I don’t really know much about whatever his religion is. If fact, I’ve un-followed him on twitter about 6 times because I get tired of his religious spam.
But, like many here, I was ready to throw a baseball at Rob Neyer’s mouth when he picked on him on twitter. Again, I don’t know why. I like Rob Neyer. There’s just something about Jeremy. I’ve come to the conclusion that it is some sort of addiction that needs a 12-step program.
He’s more than a nice guy. He’s a family man, a good ballplayer, contributes to society, is passionate about his beliefs, and genuinely cares about people less fortunate then him – and shows it by contributing his money and time. That’s why I like him.
Also, he's funny.
And can take a joke at his own expense. I like him a lot.
2012 is going to be awesome!
I remember a particular on-camera interview Affeldt was doing

Tough park, pressure of living up to a fluke-year big contract, getting a little older, changing positions yet again . . . A lot of things went wrong. He does seem like a good candidate to return, if not to form, at least to being useful.
What’s your cut-off for being useful, offensively speaking? ZiPS has him at a 75 OPS+.

Well, in 2010, he had a .340 OBP. Last year he would have been near that with a normal BABIP. I have to think someone who can play multiple positions and manage a .340 OBP is a valuable player even if he has no power at all. Probably down to .320.

What an odd collection of jerseys. Well, at least it’s not Yankees gear like so many other people in Asia.
It's like having 3 Giants Jerseys, 2 Dodgers jerseys
and a random Cleveland Indians in between. WTF?!?

Jerseys I've owned, in order of least to most ridiculous
Barry Bonds
Terrell Owens
Ken Griffey Jr.
Drew Bledsoe
Mike Alstott
The first six innings are overrated.
3 Phillies, one KC, one Mets and an all star jersey. I’m assuming that the Mets jersey is probably from a bet is an ironic buy, possible for a Halloween costume. So its not that weird.

Sure. The more I think about the movie though the more problems I have with it.
They seemed to kind of show this correlation with the team turning things around at the same time Beane started talking to the players, like they wanted this narrative that as he bonded with the players they played better, but that goes against the spirit of the story, and they did a half assed connection if that is what they were going for.
And he seems to appreciate Jonah Hill’s character when Hill says he wouldn’t have drafted Beane that high, but gives no reason why. Because of the numbers? His high school numbers?
There is no way that movie should be nominated for best picture.

The leaving out of important facts like Tejada’s MVP and the Big 3 is something that would bug people who remember it. The people I’m talking about who liked it wouldn’t have known that. To them, it was basically fiction.
@legaleagle88
I'm not crazy. My mother had me tested.
This was my big problem with it.
They totally played it like the team had NO good working parts, even though they had one of the better pitching staffs in the majors, and Tejada went nuts on the year.

sea temperature has risen in the Atlantic causing the strength of the hurricanes to increase, the frequency all depends on the precipitation in the Western Sahara.
The path of hurricanes is dependent on the Bermuda High, which is beginning to inch closer to the US, meaning the path of the hurricanes will change. Also it’s becoming stronger, meaning it will force more and more storms to take a path into the Gulf or the eastern seaboard

Be sure to protect that side of your Mac HD with a PC Virus program, because it will be just like a PC to the internet when you are using it.
oh shit, gonna have to watch out

Pika, if you’re serious about all this, I’d say that you’ll be much better off getting a pc to run along side your Mac Pro. I went down the same path 15 years ago. I do all my GIS on the pc, then output the shape files to my Mac for all the graphic work in MapPublisher. Of course, you can do all that on a PC, as well.

Good point, especially if i am serious about going into GIS, so you’re saying just get a PC and keep your macbook

well, I’m partial to mac’s, so, yeah. easy for me to say, though, because it’s not my money, and I build my pc’s.

ha, well damn! I know a few friends that do that same thing actually, building their own PC’s… but if i do ever get very serious or get a job in GIS, i’ll have to look to invest in something like that for sure

Just buy an OEM copy of Win 64 bit Pro ( about $120 ish on TD) and you are good to go. You will not get an off the shelf box with this much power at anywhere near this cost. I would prefer a Gigabyte Mother board, but MSI is a’ight.

Thirty-year-old Ioana Spangenberg attributes her 32-20-32 measurements to genes, not counting calories. In fact, she laments that she can’t seem to put on the pounds, a complaint that probably won’t earn much sympathy from American women suffering through salads and low-fat everything.
It’s her tiny tummy, you see.
"No one seems to believe it, but every day I eat three big meals and I snack on chocolate and crisps all the time," the 5-foot-7 model told the Sun. "I just have a small stomach. It’s a bit like having a natural gastric band — if I eat too much, I feel sick."

Hmm
It’s time for MLB to just do it. Wolff said at the Rotary Club that a buyout of the territorial rights “has not been discussed”, although he also said that the team would not object if the Giants kept their California League affiliate there. At the same time:
That would be weird right? A ML team and a single A team in the same city?
