I think they’d be able to if they had a big center & power forward combo that could run the floor with them and help out on defense. They tried to overpay DeAndre Jordan, but I think he could have meshed well. Tyson Chandler would fit in well, also. Offensively, they create a lot of mismatches and can push the tempo, but I’d like to see them work better without the ball when the other one has it.

The Golden Bear is ever watching
2011 Giants Adoptee: Orlando Cabrera (because everyone needs to be loved)
San Francisco Giants Won the 2010 World Series: Not a Typo
about 20% of the budget
Hmmm, what should it be? Let’s say the budget should go half to offense and defense. Relievers typically throw about a third of the innings pitched, so they should get 33% of the 50% allocated to defense, or 16.5%.
But! Roughly a third of “defense” is fielding rather than pitching. Subtract that third and you’re down to 11% for the bullpen. So it’s a pretty bad overpay.
Offense?

Named after her autobiography, Are You There, Vodka, It’s Me Chelsea.
This is on E!, and is a fictionalized look at her writing staff. So, think 30 Rock but focussed on Frank and Twofer and the rest.

Bugs me, because that show has potential, and I like Kat Dennings a lot. But shit like that makes it hard to watch. Not to mention the awful Asian stereotype boss (who I went to high school with, and like a lot as well).

How is the boss an awful stereotype of Asians? Don’t they mostly just make fun of him for being super short and dressing like a little boy? I guess Asians aren’t known for being tall, but that doesn’t really seem like a racist thing to make fun of his height.

Well, he’s supposedly Korean, but they make Chinese, Japanese, etc… jokes. Plus the broken pidgin English is awful (the actor speaks perfect American English) and hasn’t been funny in decades, to boot.

The last time we did this, it was in Giants Stadium," Tuck told a crowd of approximately 40-to-45,000 fans at the team’s Super Bowl XLVI championship rally at its home stadium. "And I am sure you know where I am going to go with this. Now we are in MetLife Stadium. It’s MetLife Stadium.

Well I guess you can’t bring backpacks into the stadium, so I had to check my bag at some creepy ass bowling ally and stuff everything of value into my wifes duffle bag sized purse, which is perfectly ok to bring with you. Also I was terrified of going to the restroom during the 7th inning stretch.

I used to take the bus and/or the ferry to games all the time when I was in college in San Rafael. The bus can be an adventure, especially after extra inning games, but it’s far more affordable than the ferry.
Is it February 19 yet?
Plus, the ferry can barely handle the demand as it is. They don’t even use the original ferry because it’s too small, they use one of the old, slow, full-size ones. It’s extremely crowded, not everybody gets a seat, you often barely get there before first pitch, and are definitely never there in time for promotions. If you want to get there on your own time, you have to take a different ferry to the main terminal, take your MUNI transfer, then get to the embarcadero line to get down to Third Street or walk.

Ah American public transport. Bad and expensive compared to other parts of the world.
Oooh Aaah, Oooh Aaah, Oooh Aaah, Cantona! Oooh Aaah Cantona!
The last time I took the ferry was in 2008, so the crowds were reasonable. I’m sure they have gotten far worse though.
Is it February 19 yet?
I used to just park in a garage downtown and walk.
Oooh Aaah, Oooh Aaah, Oooh Aaah, Cantona! Oooh Aaah Cantona!
We park under the freeway on Second Street these days. It’s a fenced lot, and it’s still half as expensive as parking in Lot A.

I think on 2nd Street, the meter stops at 6pm. If you get there right at 6 before all the spaces are filled, you can get free street parking.
You drive to the ferry in Green Brae, park and pay 17 dollars for a round trip ticket.

And some people have to drive a decently long way even to get to that. People come in from Sacramento and the Central Valley, over and above the people coming from Marin and Petaluma.

Yeah, and a guy in my Twitter feed flies up from Long Beach every month.
You can’t expect the middle of a major city to be convenient if you choose to live three counties away, and you know that going in.

I’m just saying, making parking prohibitively expensive for a large portion of your fanbase is cutting off your nose to spite your face.
I live one county away, and my cheapest option to get to the game is paying $20 to get sprawled on by drunken teenager for forty five minutes, with a chance to arrive in the middle of the first inning.

Well sell-out almost every game. Even if you adjust for “sell-out” sell-outs.

Yeah. Cheaper options are crappier (and clog our streets less). More expensive options are better (and clog our streets more). It’s not the Giants’ fault that Marin refused to join BART.

The cheaper options aren’t really all that cheap. As I said, for the same price as the ferry I can drive, get there in half the time, and get there when I want.
The pricing of the system is all out of whack, starting with Lot A and going down the line.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Again, if you live in a transit-unfriendly place, you can’t expect good transit. I mean, I don’t really know what else to say. Everyone has to pay a premium for access to culture and entertainment. You have to pay out the ass to get to the ballpark, I pay to pay out the ass to live walking distance away from it. Sure, it’d be nice if we could all be whisked away to wherever we’d like to go, but everything has to go somewhere.

I don’t have to expect good transit, but I don’t think I’m being unreasonable to be charged rates meant to be discouraging to the people who actually have alternatives for getting to the park. And if my sole alternative is overpriced as well, then the system should be better adapted to meet demand if it’s not going to provide meaningful savings and is intended to be a realistic alternative to driving.
A European model for an American transportation grid doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. The parking is more than expensive enough as it is.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
the system should be better adapted to meet demand
I agree, but Marin opted out of that system. And it’s not the Giants’ nor the City’s responsibility to get you here if you (obviously not YOU personally) won’t (literally) meet us halfway. There’s only so much we can do (and, I suspect, only so much we’re willing to do) for what is by FAR the most sparsely-populated part of the Bay Area.
That said, I’d love an easy way to get to, say, Santa Rosa, and so I’m really looking forward to SMART, which should solve a lot of North Bay-SF commuting problems.

A second, early ferry would go a long way. The original Giants Ferry would do juuuuuust fine, since it’s probably just collecting rust somewhere.
Get me to the ballpark an hour before first pitch, so I have some flexibility. That I would be more than happy to pay $17 for.
Or at least shave the cost of the big ferry by a dollar each way. Last Giants game I went to, my ticket was cheaper than the ferry one way.

I don’t know anything about the specifics of SF ballpark parking, but in general, parking in U.S. cities is crazy stupid cheap by any economic measure.
Seriously.
Considering how much gas and roads are subsidized for drivers and how badly roads are fucked up for anyone else who wants to use them; it’s hard to claim that driving & parking is “expensive” anywhere in America. When you pay $35 to park at a ballpark, that’s not expensive, that’s just market rate for real estate in a city.

Pagan played with a fractured rib last year. Evidently, PECOTA thinks his peak was 20% better than the rest of his career, and wasn’t impacted by injury, and is well into his decline at age 30.
I don’t blame him for being skeptical.

Fair; I was mostly responding to “starting from a much higher performance level than Pagan.” Obviously he is not nearly in the same category as those guys, and it kind of sinks his point, so I thought I’d just offer a reminder that Pagan’s peak was something like an OPS+ 110 from CF with plus defense. The projection seems weirdly bearish to me.

I think the thing about trading for prospects is you do that if you’ve gone in rebuilding mode and the Giants refuse to admit that they’re in rebuilding mode. Even when the team sucks. It’s always “Win Now!” with them

And when they were in rebuilding mode, they didn’t have anybody worth trading for prospects.

I also wonder if the lack of developing players on the international front— which I agree seems non-existant— is a cost saving move. It’s expensive to put together the scouting and building the academies. It’s kind of like how they threw draft picks away in the 00’s because they wanted to save money to build a team around Bonds. Also, as always, RDF

Today's Weather
A couple of lows over the central and southern Appalachians bring some nasty winter weather to parts of the Mid-Atlantic. Snow is forecast from Pennsylvania and Ohio to West Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area. Winter weather advisories have been posted for the panhandle of West Virginia, western Maryland, northern Virginia and south-central Pennsylvania.
Further south, the second low will bring clouds and light showers to Tennessee, north Georgia and the Carolinas. Ahead of the cold front, mild temperatures; behind it, seasonal temps.
Overcast today across much of the Midwest, but not much in the way of precip is expected. Sunny along the northern tier, from Montana to Michigan. Partly to mostly cloudy skies will dominate the weather picture in the southern Plains and Texas, but things should stay dry.
Light snow is expected in the heart of the Rockies. Not much accumulation is forecast.
Along the Pacific Northwest coast, rain showers. Inland, gray skies. To the south, California and Nevada are expecting a pretty nice day, with clear skies and highs at or slightly above seasonal averages.
Our pick city today is Dallas, Texas, Clayton Kershaw’s hometown. Partly sunny with a high of 50.

Much better than Swedish version and almost mirrors the books.
US version was much edgier, better pacing, and better storytelling. It was also better with the details.
Rooney Mara is excellent as Elisabeth and definitely went all out for the role.
Daniel Craig was also very good.

Much better than Swedish version
I liked the English version, and haven’t seen the Swedish version, but I can tell you from the outset that you’re probably going to be in the minority on this count.
I also think they sacrificed a lot of the most important part of the book – Blomkvist’s whole motivation – for the sake of pacing.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
I think it lacked the necessary ‘oomph’ to be plausible. The director caught so caught up in the ‘sexiness’ of an in media res intro that he glossed over the details. I’d rather be shown why it’s important than told why it’s important.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
How was it different in the Swedish version?
I though they dealt with the issue even less.

I couldn’t tell you that. But regardless of how it was handled in the Swedish version, I’d still like something more compelling. I think they spent a whole lot more time on Salander’s motivations and psyche, which don’t really get drawn out until the second book anyway. It came at the expense of Blomkvist being more than two-dimensional.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
I think the "show don't tell" critique has turned into an obvious crutch.
How do you show that he’s been convicted of libel without saying that?
And, visually,
He’s alone when we first see him. The way people physically react to his presence tells us he’s sort of an outcast.
By giving us some background on the amount of work that went into the Wennerstrom exposé, the betrayal, all that.
“Convicted of libel” is about the bare bones background you can provide, and I don’t think the movie went much further than that. It doesn’t build up Wennerstrom as an important enough prize to justify him giving up his life for a year.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong

but I don’t think in the movie it was stated how long he would be working on it.
The motivation buildup in the movie was less than in the book but I think sufficient. Books are much better at showing motivation anyways.

It was enough that Lisbeth — the titular character — said “He is who he presents himself to be” and hints that he was setup.
This guy did something good and he got screwed for it. Perhaps they didn’t build up Wennerstrom enough as a violent threat (his mob ties), but that wasn’t really the focus of this particular story (though, I assume Lisbeth’s machinations will now involve the Russian mob in the sequels).
See, this is where we disagree. Hinting that he was set-up isn’t really enough for me. It was a conscious gloss by the directors, and it left me cold with regards to him going to Hedeby, agreeing to the project, and getting the investigation underway.
I don’t think the movie was made with people who had read the book in mind. Not to say that it should be, but the only way I can really justify not spending more time on the background with Wennerstrom is if you want to fling the audience into the mystery as soon as possible and not get them distracted with this other story.
Since they felt it necessary to put the cathartic Wennestrom takedown at the end, though, I don’t really get that choice. It felt really tacked on. It’s just there to set up Salander’s newfound wealth in the subsequent movies. I don’t think the director/screenwriter cared much about Wennerstrom at all.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Another view is that the cathartic take down only happened because of Lisbeth’s interest in/attraction to/friendship with Blomquist, so, structurally, it could have only happened at the end. She redeems him because he — in some way — redeems her. Now, I don’t really care for plot point of them sleeping together. Not that I think rape victims become asexual prudes or anything, it just didn’t quite feel right and I was actually pretty happy with the friendship that was developing between them.
You’re spot on about not wanting to distract the audience from the main storyline and that’s why the Wennestrom stuff became background noise, pulled into the fore at the end to comment on the relationship between our two leads. In that sense, the story is very much about Lisbeth: she has a friend.
This
also it shows the difference between the two. Lisabeth is looking for a companionship, Bloomkvist is looking for a warm body in his bed.

I think we agree on that much, but my personal opinion is that their treatment of Wennerstrom left both Wennerstrom and Blomkvist feeling a bit like cardboard in the movie.
I think Lisbeth is the move compelling character in either case, but it felt weirdly lopsided to me at the beginning and end.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
I wish they could have made Bloomkvist’s situation more dire in the beginning. He had to pay a fine. The movie could have mentioned he would be giving up his life’s savings/his flat etc.
It did
I can’t remember the exact sequence but in the movie Bloomkvist said that the last time he did something with solid basis, he lost his life savings.

Right, the motivating factor is the dirt on Wennerstrom. But in the book, the motivation for revenge is much stronger, more clearly illustrated, and better emphasized.
In the movie, I felt they portrayed Blomkvist with a sort of “oh, bother” attitude about the whole libel thing. If they had spent 10 more minutes on background with Wennerstrom, I think it would have given more drive and plausibility. But I guess I’m in a minority in thinking that.

Like I said, it’s supposed to be this big cathartic thing. Wennerstrom wriggles away, and Salander, in her emotional attachment to Blomkvist, is like “aw, heeeeeeell naw,” and then does her thing. Which in turn highlights that attachment that pushes her further away when she breaks all contact with him at the end of the first book/movie.
The whole sequence felt really tacked on in the movie to me, which made the scene at the end with the leather jacket also feel a little stale. Just my opinion.

She is portrayed as having Asberger’s. I know people with the disorder, and while it does have some impacts on social cues and building relationships, it doesn’t make them take down mafia crime lords.
It answers the hacking and fixation questions well, but the Wennerstrom takedown goes well beyond the realm of fixation.

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/7553701/the-lost-art-doctoring-baseball
Meanwhile, doctoring pitches helped extend the careers of countless fading arms throughout baseball history. More than a simple performance enhancer, it was damn fun. Anytime a suspected scuffer or greaser came to town, local media fired off breathless “Does He or Doesn’t He?,” “Will He or Won’t He?” columns. Students of the game watched the pitcher’s every move, looking for a fishy hand movement or sleeve swipe. A batter’s dirty look as he walked back to the dugout was itself worth the price of admission. The mere threat of a spitball drove hitters batty, to the point where they’d get pissed if it wasn’t thrown, given all the waiting and anguish they went through over the course of a game.
How and why did all of that vanish from the game?
“Bruce Sutter,” said Mike Maddux, the Texas Rangers pitching coach and 15-year major league veteran whose own pitching career briefly coincided with the Hall of Fame reliever’s. “He mastered the splitter. All of a sudden you had a pitch that had the same action you could get with the greaseball.”
lol
… Of the four major leaguers on the list, only Sutton avoided overt admission of his crimes. In one oft-told account, Sutton was asked if it was true that he used foreign substances on the ball. “Not true at all,” he replied. “Vaseline is manufactured right here in the United States.”

How big is too big?
Decent article in NYT about size of televisions. My favorite line:
Televisions are getting huge. Eighty inches is 6 feet 8 inches. That is as big as Carmelo Anthony of the Knicks. If Carmelo Anthony moved into your living room, you would notice
I think my next major purchase is going to be a new TV to replace the Reagan-era CRT now taking up an entire city block of my living room. The reason I mention it is that I want something reasonably-sized, maybe 32 inches or so. And my family thinks that’s crazy. It’s 12 feet wide or GTFO. Whatever happened to having a nice, Cainish television?

I’d have a Fontenot in the kitchen, and something larger, probably a Mauer, in the living room.

We’ve been happy with forty two in an apartment living room. Thirty two seems small, unless it’s in your kitchen or bedroom or other small space.
It really depends on the size of the room. In a large living room a 32inch tv looks tiny.
