2012 Adoption Draft: It's That Time of Year

Fellas and ladies: it's that time of year again. It's time to do the annual McC adoption draft. Here's how we're gonna start: here is the list of all currently adopted Giants and their "parents." Unless you "de-adopt" your son, that player/executive/human is not available for adoption. For this thread, the only thing we're going to do is decide whether or not you're keeping your son. I'll start this off; I'm throwing Jose Flores back into the pool (it was a good run, buddy). Commence the adoption thread!

Hat tip to nvsfg for the list of adopted Giants on the McWiki. That makes my job infinitely easier.

We'll give people until Wednesday night at 8pm PST to ditch their adoptees, then we'll move on to the next phase of the process.

Please don't rec this post, we'll have a lot of these and we don't want them clogging up the recommended FanPosts section.

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Last year, there was a weighted system of comments, FanPosts, and FanShots that I will attempt to resurrect from the depths of the Internet. Its not perfect, but it’s the best I got. The system is open to revision, of course, but that will be a future post.

With over 21,000 comments, it’s safe to say you’d draft pretty high.

No, the adoption draft is the adoption draft. Some thread you posted is just some thread you posted. I personally refuse to acknowledge mid-year adoptions’ legitimacy, for just this reason: I feel that what you did was basically jump the line, and I’ve had no truck with cutters since about the second grade. Luckily, I have zero authority on the issue.

Also, a note

as it was last year, people who lost their son through no fault of their own get first priority, so the adopted parents of Cody Ross, Henry Sosa, Zack Wheeler, etc will get first crack at a new adoptee, then the rest of us hacks who are so selfishly giving up on our sons will get our chance.

by Fla-Giant on Feb 6, 2012 7:03 AM PST up reply actions

Are you sure this is how it went last year? I’ll go on record as saying that we should change ths policy. Everybody who will be drafting should be ranked by the same rules. Let me explain why. The players that are most likely to get traded or released each year are minor leaguers and lower-drafted players. Should the guys that had adopted Travis Ishikawa, Waldis Joaquin, Max Ramirez, Jose Flores, … (all of whom drafted well down the list) really be put in front of older more-established members?

I was just picking him from a list of guys that are no longer in the org. The point that I was trying to make is that you and active/long-running members like you, will be getting a very high draft slot under the current system. People shouldn’t get to go to the front of the line just because their son got traded/let go.

by Johnny Disaster on Feb 6, 2012 10:35 AM PST up reply actions

Because it allows for the cynical manipulation of the draft.

Let’s say that I draw a low slot for this year’s adoption draft for whatever reason (rarely post, new member), so by the time I get to choose there’s very slim pickings left. I want to get a really good slot in next year’s draft so I cynically choose a player this year that I think will be released from the org before next year’s adoption draft (Joel Weeks, Drew Berger, Jesus Navarro, Luis Munoz, Brennan Flick, …). Let’s say that I guess right and my adoptee does indeed get released. That means that I automatically vault to the top 5 or top 10 of the 2013 draft (ahead of many very active and/or long-term members) without ever having to contribute much to the community. I’m virtually assured to get a good shot at one of the top 2012 draftees, or a new free agent signed in the offseason, or somebody released back into the pool.

I thought it was guys whose player gets traded get first crack at the acquisition. Otherwise you just get thrown back in the pool. So Wheeler’s adopter could have gotten Beltran and is now in the general pool. I guess whoever had Verdugo and Sanchez would have to fight over Cabrera and the loser ends up getting some sort of boost. Same goes for Torres and Ramirez.

I’m afraid this won’t be a very popular idea but…
As someone who worked on the list I think the adoption list should be thinned out a little bit.
There are people on the list that you never see or hear from, I know there are lurkers, but there are ways to see if they have at least logged on sometime in the past 9 months or so.

I dunno…I’m willing to copy my original list of adopters and remove from the list everyone who puts in a claim or gives up their adoptee. This way I’d end up with a list of absentee parents, who may be subject to GPS intervention (Giants Protective Services).

If you scroll way up towards the top you’ll see that we discussed this when Goofus proposed the following new rule:

I propose a new rule. If someone has adopted a player and that person has no activity since the last draft, we throw that player back in the pool.

Implicit in that suggestion is that youi don’t have to chime in saying that you’re keeping your adoptee as long as you post at least a few times a year.

It’s the names we don’t recognize that we’ll want to check.

"Recent comments" has a timeline

I looked up sharksrog earlier because I thought he still had Lincecum (SFGuy does now) and he’s still listed as having something like 6000 comments despite not having logged in for a year. He also has nothing under recent comments/posts. Evidently they just list comments past a certain date and if you don’t have anything after that date you don’t have any recent comments.

I would give a bit of a cushion

His last login was March 17th, in the middle of spring training. It’s quite likely there are people who don’t come around during the offseason, but they shouldn’t lose their adoptees. But if someone hasn’t been on since last January that means they spent the whole 2011 season and most of the offseason not commenting on anything. That’s a long enough period of inactivity IMO.

right, but my point is that if we use January 2011 as the cut off … when the draft itself was in Feb of 2011 then what’s the point, because technically, who would that exclude?

Anyone who hasn't posted since the last draft

I was trying to provide a bit of a cushion. I’m sure there are people on the list who adopted someone in the 2010 draft then quit sometime between then (Feb 2010) and Jan 2011. Those are the people I’m trying to exclude, most of whom presumably wouldn’t have been cut off the 2011 draft, unless the inactivity period then was only a couple months.

For example, say User adopted someone in the 2010 draft. They continue posting through Nov. 2010. In the 2011 draft, that person would not automatically lose their adoptee (only three months of inactivity: Dec., Jan., Feb.). But now, they haven’t posted since Nov. 2010, so that’s more than a year of inactivity, and they lose their adoptee.

Someone else who adopts in Feb. 2011, however, does get to keep their adoptee. I guess that part’s debatable – I would give a one year bye to adopters. Perhaps you disagree. I wouldn’t oppose moving it to Feb. 2011 – I suggested Jan because anyone who hasn’t posted since then has definitely been inactive for a year. Feb 2011 would catch almost everyone though.

I think the list was updated last draft though, no dead beat parents from the Feb 2010 draft should be on the list.

I don’t think, out of the 100 people left that there will be more than maybe 10? that haven’t commented in even the last 6 or 7 months.
TSFGWTWS in Nov of 2010 so in 2011 we had more newbs drafting.

Isn’t the point of the draft to support your son? If so, then any parent who missed their son’s whole 2011 season should have custody rights revokes. McCoven child services needs to step in.

by Nivra on Feb 8, 2012 11:21 PM PST via iPhone app up reply actions

I'm with Nivra

The point of the draft is so that a McMember is around to support and report on their draftee. To find the silver lining in their 6.5 ERA or .250 AVG. So that someone actually notices when the player moves from DL to inactive to Japan. Drafting then lurking doesn’t cut it. Nothing wrong with lurking – I read far more than I post – but I’ve walked into the other room, opened McC and waited as 1500 comments loaded just to type “IshiBOOM” in a GDT after Travis hit a dinger.
