The Making Of "Homer At The Bat," The Episode That Conquered Prime Time 20 Years Ago Tonight
The fantastic Erik Malinowski digs into one of the greatest moments in American history. At the intersection of baseball nerddom and Simpsons nerddom, there is "Homer at the Bat." Here's how it got made.
Also, that episode is 20 years old, and you are old.

I'm saying that most animation isn't detailed enough for HD to make a significant difference..
It’s not like baseball or Hockey, where you’re trying to track a 4-pixel wide object moving around at a 100 MPH.
Actually, it doesn’t matter for a lot of TV. Just gilding the lily most of the time (or worse, revealing the actors’ many wrinkles and pores, a la Fox’s excrable postseason closeups).

I think Three Men and a Comic Book deserves some mention because, for my money, it was the first time the show really made good on its potential. I used to call it the “first perfect episode.” But I think it’s more reasonable to say it was the first time the show was simply great.

I just was never all that impressed by the Walking Dead TV series. The pace already seemed extremely slow, and then I just got really annoyed when they branched away from the books to milk the Shane/ Lori/Rick triangle for all it’s worth. Then really annoyed when they spent like 8 episodes first looking for the girl, then completely forgetting about her, and then “surprise!” she was undead in the barn the whole time!

It’s not like season one was flawless when Darabont ran things, though. It feels like they’re undergoing a course correction, but these two-person, two-page scenes in between quick zombie battles doesn’t work as well on TV as they do in the comics… mainly because the characters are frighteningly dull or just pointless.

It’s never made me laugh. Whenever I’ve seen it, I find it confusing. I think they are supposed to be doctors but I can’t suspend the disbelief and just sit there thinking…these guys aren’t doctors. They have to be nurses. This is supposed to be a comedy, right? What else is on?

I dont get why people pile on the contemporary Simpsons episodes. Especially in comparison with Seinfeld.

I can’t speak for everyone, but I haven’t seen a new episode in several years that I found to be funny at all.
I also haven’t watched many of them, because I don’t like that feeling.

I find them good compared to everything except their best. My point is that everyone seems to be repeating the “Simpson’s sucks now” mantra, but I havent heard actual criticism.
Again, I’ll grant to each their own, I hate Seinfeld for its structured predictability. If you’ve seen it you can see those show-ending “twists” from a mile away.
One way or another, this darkness got to give.
There was a period where the writing legit sucked. Somewhere around the 14th season, I think, where the writers really started scraping the bottom of the barrel.
They have since found a second wind, but I think during that period a lot of people left and never looked back. What I’ve seen since then has been at least okay, but it hasn’t felt like the Simpsons for whatever reason.
Andrew Susac models himself after Buster Posey: Throwin' darts and breakin' hearts.
I promise not to argue incessantly about Brandon Crawford. Maybe.
I think at one point there was a fundamental shift in the comedy of the show. My experience was that the older episodes that I loved had a really conversational, organic humor, and the newer episodes that hurt me had a more punchline, slapstick humor.
Maybe this hasn’t been as much of a thing in the newest episodes, but it was killing me for a while.

It lacked a coherent throughline, and even as a Giants fan I was a little bothered by the “Rah rah! Giants are awesome and can do no wrong!”
One of the nice things about HBO’s 24/7 is that they follow two opposing teams for a month or so. So they are not beholden to making one team look awesome all the time. The ability to compare/contrast the strengths and weakness of two different groups was pretty nice.

The lack of a decent timeline style plot is kind of weird… I get that they’re trying to highlight players lives and personalities, but hard knocks does this well and manages to keep a good plot. Still, it doesn’t bother me too much given that I know the team and how the season went…

Agreed. I liked the first episode, maybe the first two…behind the scenes with Cain and his family was neat. Holy Shit.
According to fangraphs Halladay, Lee and Hamels had a combined WAR of 19.8. For reference, the combined pitching WAR of the Giants for 2011 was 22.9 and 22 teams had a team pitching WAR of 19.6 or less.
Roy Halladay’s WAR of 8.2 alone was higher that the Orioles, Reds, Pirates and Astros combined pitching WAR (8.1, 7.0, 6.9 and 4.1, respectively) All three had higher WAR’s that the Astros.

video Ratto and Baggs on Chronicle Live
Ratto says it’s pointless to speculate on Buster Posey’s physical condition and whether he’s able to catch complete games until late March because he’s been reporting no pain and is on a “normal schedule”. Ratto says he doesn’t think the Giants “have many concerns” that Buster will be able to catch next season and he won’t be in the mix for first base until Bochy figures out what he’s going to do with Belt, Huff, and Pill.
Baggs says that even though many assume Chris Stewart will be the backup next season, in part because he outplayed Eli Whiteside, Whiteside is “probably the incumbent” for the job because he’s a “favorite” of Bruce Bochy and the pitching staff and because he was dealing with injury last season.

If the HBO show continues, it won’t get to the next book, which is call The Winds of Winter, until about 2017 (assuming SoS is 2 seasons). It’s the final book that will be interesting timewise. HBO won’t wait 4 years to do the next season.
I actually bet he’s going to get a ton of pressure from HBO to speed things up if the second season of GoT is really successful.

Tiny excerpt:
Now one could argue that the Giants are saving their cash in an attempt to sign Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum to long-term deals. That’s fair, but simply signing Beltran and Barmes while letting Belt play first would have gone a long way toward improving the club for 2012 and would not have cost it that much in terms of talent or dollars.

People love Alderson and Towers. What’s the first things they do, improve the bullpen.
Anthopoulos (our favorite GM golden child) goes out and signs Oliver for $4.5 million and sign Cordero for $4.5 million and trades for two other bullpen arms. He also sign Janssen for 2/$5.9 with a club option $4 million.

Signed by Giants area scout (and former big leaguer) Dan Murray in the 16th round, Blackburn would touch 94-95 mph, sitting in the low 90s, with good feel for locating the pitch, and both his curveball and changeup project as above-average pitches.

Affeldt:

Loading up a bullpen should be one of the last parts to building a playoff team and can be done at the trade deadline. It shouldn’t take priority over improving one of the worst offensive ballclubs in MLB.

But I’m petrified of our bullpen this year. I think it’s going to regress very hard, and I think the Giants trusting (and committing millions of dollars based on the idea) that relievers being as good next year as they were last year is profoundly dumb.
They say they want to keep their pitching staff intact, but if you keep a pitching staff intact long enough, it will start to suck. And our bullpen is ripe for age and statistical regression. I’d much have preferred to get younger relievers in their starting next year, and be rid of these 30+ expensive lefties with poor peripherals.

Small point about Barmes – they did try and sign him. He wanted the starting job with the Pirates. You can definitely argue they should have given him the job over Crawford though. I thought Barmes would be a nice 1-2 of Crawford platoon or sucks backup/Freddy Sanchez rests and injured backup as well, but his bat isn’t great, he’s got a lot of Coors inflation.
I’ve said this before – you want to go with Dan Runzler in a high leverage situation, you are a braver man than me. The guys making the decisions obviously do not trust him for that roll at this point in his career.

GP laid out above what it would take. He didn’t count the 6M to Melky. So don’t get Melky and add 6M more to sign Beltran.
So many issues rolled into one
1) My comment talked about whether it would have cost more to sign Beltran had the Giants been in on the bidding. The answer is most definitely yes. He got 2/$26 million with a full no-trade. Had the Giants offered the same deal, it is likely that Beltran would have gotten $2-4 million more and maybe even a third year. The Giants were not going to outbid the Cardinals with the Cardinals losing Pujols.
2) The Melky trade came much earlier in the year. The Giants had to decide whether they were going to offer Sanchez arbitration or trade him for Melky. This was way before Beltran signed his deal, which no one really knew was going to be.
3) Affeldt and Lopez decision were also made at a much earlier time frame, with the Giants having to make a decision on Affeldt’s option very early on. Okay, let’s assume the Giants went all in. They don’t sign either and keep $8.5 million and trade Sanchez for nothing. That would get you somewhere near $13-$14 million. Would that have gotten Beltran…certainly no guarantee, especially in October/November.
Oh, do you pull the switch on the Pagan trade? Pagan cost more than the combo of Torres and Ramirez. Do you trade Ramirez knowing that you have already let Lopez and Affeldt go.
So there was a good chance that you would not have Affeldt, Lopez, and Sanchez and lost out on Beltran. By the time Beltran signed, all of the other OF options (Willingham, Kubel, Cuddyer) had signed. Now, what do you do with $14 million budget but no one to sign.

1) the triggering point was Affeldt’s option. Once you decided to sign Affeldt, there wasn’t going to be enough money to sign Beltran. Heck, there may not been enough money to sign Beltran even if they don’t sign Affeldt.
2) the question isn’t whether they were going to make a decision on Sanchez. They may have decided that they were going to keep him this year but then KC offered Melky. No one could say that the Giants traded away a sure thing in Sanchez.

1) The Giants only had one player they wanted to spend money on to improve the offense: Beltran. When Beltran told them that he wanted, the Giants did a risk/benefit analysis and decided that it was not worth risking losing the players that they were going to lose in return for a chance at Beltran

If that’s the case, then it’s an error in judgment on their part again. There were, for example, quite a few decent shortstops on the FA and trade market this year. The Giants starting SS is currently projected for something like a 70 OPS+. If they decided Beltran wasn’t worth it, rather than say, “Okay, then, time to spend $10 million on relievers!”, they might have said, “Well, okay then, let’s sign one of Affeldt/Lopez and then try to acquire a decent SS.”

I never said that he would have gotten 3/45…just that’s what Beltran was looking for. As the timeline showed, Beltran was waiting out for all other OFs to sign their deals before agreeing to something.
The question is whether the Giants could have gone to 2/$30-32 mil or 3/$36-$40 mil. Even assuming the Giants match, there was no reason to expect that Beltran would have picked the Giants.

Why wouldn’t he pick us? Or are we back to the thing that hitters hate our home park and never want to play here.
Ask me about my blog.
Beltran left no doubt: It wouldn’t be enough for Giants management to pin hopes on re-signing him plus banking on and health and production from catcher Buster Posey and second baseman Freddy Sanchez
.
“I would consider this organization for sure, because the pitching is unbelievable, and adding those guys back, of course you’re adding more offense to the ballclub,” Beltran said. […]
“But I believe there should be a little bit more than [Posey and Sanchez],” he said.

I thought trading for Angel Pagan was in part a way of enticing Beltran to re-sign with the Giants. Beltran had made clear the Giants needed a better lead off hitter and Pagan was also his former teammate from the Mets.

I do like this quote from Baggs’ blog:
But here’s the key: Belt understands all this now. He doesn’t plan to let his self esteem ebb and flow with every clue or every roster decision, as it did last year. He mentioned a conversation in the Dominincan with scouting director John Barr, who gave him a simple message: "We believe in you. We know the kind of player you are and who you will be." video Baggs and Schulman on Chronicle Live
Baggs says he and Schulman think the interview Brian Wilson had with them yesterday was one of the most “subdued” he’s had. Wilson seems “very focused on getting back to where he needs to be” and isn’t partaking in the kind of antics he did last spring. He wants to be the “guy everyone can count on”.
Schulman believes Wilson was “embarrassed” he couldn’t pitch at the end of last season. He thinks Wilson decided he needed to put aside extra non-baseball stuff until he can return to pitching form. Schulman says the first time he saw Wilson at spring training camp, he was sitting by his locker reading the Bible.
Schulman says Ryan Vogelsong worked hard this past off season because he knows people question whether he’s a one-year-wonder. Vogelsong “has something to prove” but his back injury could complicate things like it did Wilson last season. He’s probably really upset about the injury situation.
Schulman thinks Mota and Clay Hensley will probably make the team and could be used to start games if needed.
Baggs says that ever since 2003/04, when Barry Zito’s fastball velocity started to decline, “he’s had to find new ways to generate momentum, and generate movement, and try and trick hitters”. Baggs gives credit to Zito for trying to improve and “not just cashing his very large paychecks”.
Baggs also says there is still too much money left on Zito’s contract for the Giants to “eat” it this year. Schulman on the other hand believes Zito could be released sometime later in the season.
Baggs says the Matt Cain extension deal isn’t close to being done. The Giants want to sign Lincecum long term and “they know it’s going to be wildly expensive”. The more cost certainty and control the Giants have the better it will be. Buying out Bumgarner’s arbitration years could help with budgeting for Lincecum. The Giants think they can afford to build a team around Lincecum.
Schulman doesn’t think it’s essential the Giants buy out Bumgarner’s arbitration years. He doesn’t think Bumgarner is the type of person who would “take it personally”. Matt Cain is the focus right now and Schulman doesn’t think the Giants will work out a deal with Bumgarner before Cain and Lincecum.

He pitched well at the start of last year. Then he had injury problems. I don’t mind seeing what he has to offer to start out this year. I do think if he sucks though that there is a real probability of a DFA by mid-season.
He had a bad year last year due to injuries and a bad year in 2008.
Otherwise, he has been a decent 5th start (1.5 rWAR in 2007, 2.0 in 2009, 1.5 in 2010).

A young top-20 pitcher in baseball is willing to give you a hometown discount and you show little interest in re-signing him. Yeah, that’s the smart thing to do.
I can see it now: the team is 5 games back at the All-Star break with one of the worst offenses in baseball. Fans are screaming for Sabean to get a hitter, and he gives it to them by trading Cain. And McCovey Chronicles organizes its first-ever Jump off the Golden Gate meet-up.

That was probably overstating it, but if you’re stating that you can’t get offensive pieces because you’re going to lock up your pitching, and said free-agent-to-be pitcher goes on record saying he’d take a hometown discount, and then you go all offseason without getting a deal done, it sure seems like there’s a lack of urgency for something that’s supposedly so important.

Baggs says he and Schulman think the interview Brian Wilson had with them yesterday was one of the most "subdued" he’s had. Wilson seems "very focused on getting back to where he needs to be" and isn’t partaking in the kind of antics he did last spring. He wants to be the "guy everyone can count on".
Schulman believes Wilson was "embarrassed" he couldn’t pitch at the end of last season. He thinks Wilson decided he needed to put aside extra non-baseball stuff until he can return to pitching form.
You know what? I don’t think his about Wilson. I think he’s a savvy guy. I think he knows where his market value is. I think he’s run a pretty extraordinary and carefully constructed self-marketing campaign for a few years now. I think that before he was ever successful, he never did anything like the beard or the public non sequiturs. I think that he knows when he’s in a position to push his project and when he needs to back off. I think we saw him backing off already last year.
Now that it’s here, the beard’s not going anywhere—at least not until he needs a new mascot. It’s the keystone of his campaign. But the antics have always gone away when he’s not performing. They have, because he knows when he can and can’t get away with it.
He’s not subdued right now because he was embarrassed about his performance last season. He’s subdued right now because he can’t get away with being a sideshow. Any additional attention he brings to himself is attention he brings to his arm, and that’s a problem for him.

This could be a case of too many ribs for Lincecum. He should definitely contact Lowry for treatment recommendations.

I like coming to a thread late, finding a freakout, not scrolling down to see if it was resolved, freaking out, and then finding the resolution only after participating. It’s like I was here when it was happening, except only from my perspective.
Once more, coming to you by proxy.

LOL Bochy...
I just watched the episode again for the hell of it and giggled when Mr. Burns pinch hit Homer for Straw because of the lefty/righty matchup…
You wonder if Boch would have pinch hit for Bonds facing a lefty…
