Which NRIs have the best chance of making the roster?
So here's a little bit of a community project (as if I haven't gotten involved in enough of those already). Below, I will post a link to the official list of non-roster invitees to spring training. What I want to hear from all of you is, which ones are most likely to make the Opening Day roster? Obviously, the odds are against all of these guys, but there's a not-so-insignificant chance one or more will make the opening 25. So who has the best chance? The voting system is explained after the jump.
Here's how the voting will work. In the comments, I will post the names of the NRIs that I think are most likely to make the O-D roster. Any of y'all are welcome to post names I forgot. We'll vote using the +1 system, until it becomes clear that the majority of the community has settled on only a couple of candidates, then I'll edit the fanpost to include a poll. While we are using the +1 system, you are welcome to vote for as many candidate as you like.
TO CLARIFY: I said earlier to use the +1 system, but rec'ing that comment is fine as well. Both ways will count.
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Blanco has the best shot, due to concerns about finding an effective leadoff hitter. I think Jean Machi has the 2nd best chance, but he’ll likely need an injury by one of the other relievers to make the opening day roster.

I tend to agree
His speed, defense and ability to draw a walk makes him the most intriguing of the list
Bold Prediction: Pablo Sandoval finishes 1st or 2nd in 2012 NL MVP voting. I'm Twittering now (well maybe not literally now): @GoofusMcP

Blanco looks like a bit of a run away winner at the moment. Do you guys think thats down to his ability/performance, limited upside or experience from the rest or just that the roster looks pretty much right now?
by KingOfSpain on Feb 20, 2012 11:17 AM PST up reply actions
I think it’s mainly down to the possibiltiy that he seems to fill a role (leadoff hitter) that was sorely missed last year. Also, Angel Pagan appears to be the only other good choice for a leadoff hitter – and even he’s not a perfect fit.
It also comes down to Blanco appearing to have found a groove for his hitting stroke in winter league ball, plus roster logistics. The Giants would have to make room for Blanco on the 40-man before he can be added to the 25-man roster. The 40-man is currently all full, but I pretty sure that either Whiteside or Stewart (whoever loses the backup catcher battle) will be DFA’d and then sent to Fresno near the end of ST – thus opening up 1 slot on the 40-man roster.

Oh ok, thanks! Glad to know its at least partly down to his ability to help the team. Do teams really pay much attention to winter league stats?
by KingOfSpain on Feb 20, 2012 11:50 AM PST up reply actions
Not so much stats as they do scout their overall game. The Gaints signed Blanco after seeing him play for about 2 weeks in the VWL (he was Hector Sanchez’s teammate) and they’ve commented on how pleased they were with Brandon Belt’s play in the DWL in November and December.

This
And the fact that he’s not a prospect. It seems unlikely that the Giants would give a job to a less-highly-touted prospect like Noonan, and similarly unlikely they’d promote someone from the low minors. Considering the list is comprised of players who are either (1) low-minors prospects, (2) unimpressive upper-minors prospects, and (3) minor league deals, I’d say (3) is the only category likely to produce a guy who gets on the 25-man. Of those players, Blanco clearly has the best shot with a pitching addition possible from any of Hensley/Runzler/Correa/Edlefsen/Otero diluting each others’ chances. There’s plenty of infielders, but of the six OFs on the 40-man, Peguero, Graham, and Kieschnick are all longshots make the team, and that leaves three OFs for five spots.
Lorenzo Mendoza's name almost rhymes. It's so close he can taste it. Sometimes it keeps him up nights.
Giants baseball: We're stupid enough to WIN that (TM)
Graham, since he is on the 40, is my longshot to see some major league time this year.

Maybe if injuries ravage the roster
But I think it’s just as likely, if not more so, that he gets DFA’d.

I can see Graham getting the call at some point. While not known for his offensive prowess he is a huge threat on the basepaths as well as a ++ defender so that gives him a leg up the others in my opinion. Kiesch has been too inconsistant and Peguero, well, I like Peguero too so we’ll just have to see.

"GM Jack Zduriencik is one of the sharper tools in the shed. Elsewhere in that shed, Brian Sabean continues to pound screws into bricks with a garden rake."
I have to think we’ll see Peguero in September once rosters expand at the latest, unless he completely tanks in Fresno or gets hurt. Could he potentially be the right-handed half of a platoon with Schierholtz in RF in 2013?
I suppose Graham could make the team ahead of Blanco, since he’s already on the 40-man, but if Blanco makes the team this spring and justifies 40-man inclusion, I don’t see why they’d promote Graham ahead of Peguero if they need a fifth outfielder. I imagine that if a need arises due to injury, they could give Peguero a cameo in midseason as well.
Don’t forget Burriss is hanging around to be the speed guy off the bench too. Makes it less likely they keep a guy purely to be a baserunning weapon.

Are we talking Opening Day or anytime this season, because if it’s anytime then Runzler’s the clearest choice isn’t he? He’s been on the team each of the past three season’s and mostly performed pretty well. If he doesn’t make opening day (and he seems likely to do so to me) then he’s certainly the first guy called up when a bullpen pitcher goes on the DL.
Of course, Runzler’s not a NRI anyway so I guyess he doesn’t qualify.

Not sure if any of the following were NRI's. They may all be major league deals:
Chris Stewart
Eli Whiteside
Clay Hensley
Boof Bonser
Yusmeiro Petit
Travis Blackley
I believe Stewart, Whitey and Hensley are all on the 40-man. Bonser is out until summer with an injury; Petit was a nice starter-insurance pickup to pitch in Fresno. I’ve never heard of Blackley.
Australian born lefty, pitched a few innings for Giants around 2009 or so. Maybe even a start or 2.
