The McCovey Chronicles Fantasy League, For Money.

********* ATTENTION *************

I HAVE NOW RECEIVED ENOUGH SUBMISSIONS TO FILL THE LEAGUE. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE CONSIDERED, YOU MAY SEND IN AN EMAIL AND I WILL PLACE YOU ON THE WAITING LIST IN CASE SOMEONE DROPS.

********** END ATTENTION ***********

Welcome to the official organizing thread for the first (?) ever McC fantasy league played for cold, hard cash. I am embarking on this endeavor to attempt to create a more intense, passionate fantasy league, one motivated not only by passion and pride, but that greatest of motivators, cash money money.

I'm sure this will not be a particularly pleasant herd of cats to corral, but I'm nonetheless going to attempt to organize this thing. If you would like to participate, please read the following very, very carefully. I will attempt to answer all questions here. At the end of this post will be the information for signing up. If you could, please rec this post so that it'll stay up long enough to attract interest.

POINT THE FIRST: The entrance fee for this league shall be $40. This seems to balance the desires of those who would like to play for a significant sum with those who are looking for something more affordable. I understand that there are some people who will be priced out at this level. I apologize for that.

POINT THE SECOND: The payments for this league shall be administered by the fantasy league payment company Leaguesafe. Please go to their website and read all about them and all their processes. The payment for this league will be done via "e-check", which requires that you give your checking account number to Leaguesafe, which then withdraws the funds. There is an option to pay with a credit card, but if I enable that option for the league, there is a 3% skim off all donations. We will, therefore, be using the "e-check" option. I have done this before with Leaguesafe, as have many of my friends, and have had no problems and enjoyed using their service. I've yet to see complaints anywhere about this company, and I'm happy to use them again. Using this service prevents you from having to trust me with your money, which makes the whole thing better for everyone.

POINT THE THIRD: The winnings of the league shall be distributed thusly: Third place shall receive 40$. Second place shall receive 80$. First place shall receive the rest of the money, which will depend on how many people sign up for the league. Note: If 8 or fewer people sign up, we may eliminate the third place prize.

POINT THE FOURTH: This will be a head-to-head league with a snake (non-auction) draft. This league will be played on Yahoo fantasy baseball, the playform with which I have had the most enjoyment. This league will allow drafting of players in both leagues.

POINT THE FIFTH: The scoring categories will be the standard 5x5, with just three minor adjustments. We will use OBP instead of AVG, Net Saves instead of Saves, and Net Stolen Bases instead of Stolen Bases. Therefore, the 10 scoring categories will be: OBP, HR, RBI, NSB, Runs, Wins, Strikeouts, ERA, NS, WHIP.

************

Holy shit, you read all that and you still want to play in this league? Awesome.

Here's what you have to do: Send an email to mccfantasy@gmail.com.

In this email should be: Your name, your MCC username (with a link to your profile, if you could), and a statement that you're interested in playing in this league and willing to pay $40 through the Leaguesafe service. I'd also like you to include which day of the week/time of day would generally work best for you to participate in the draft (i.e. Saturday afternoons).

I will be reviewing these emails. If there are more people interested than we have room for, preference will be given to more established MCC regulars, people who have been on the site longer, have more comments, etc, but newer members should be free to sign up too.

Within a week or two, I will be sending out invitations to the people who have registered who the league has room for. I'm not sure how many people will be interested, so the league could be anywhere from 8 to 16 people. If I get less than 8 people interested, we'll call this off.

Not really question

But if it’s only 8 people I don’t really want to play. 10 or more and I’m in.

Is this NL/AL, or NL only?

Will there be playoffs, and if so, how many teams will get in?

by Sawtooth on Feb 13, 2012 2:04 PM PST reply actions

Yes, there will be playoffs

How many teams get in will depend how many people join the league.

by GiantPain on Feb 13, 2012 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

Never played a head-to-head, always standard roto. Love the OBP, Net Saves and Net SBs.

Question: Please define the waiver wire process.

I’m in if there are more than 10 teams. Prefer 12-team plus so you have to dig, but don’t want to be too picky.

by shankbone on Feb 13, 2012 2:16 PM PST reply actions

Waiver wire process will be whatever the standard Yahoo setting is

Which I believe is a 2 day waiver with a continual rolling list.

You’re the second person to say they want 10 minimum, so we’ll probably go with that as the minimum number. Please send me an email as described above!

by GiantPain on Feb 13, 2012 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

Just looked it up, that is correct the standard is a 2 day waiver for any player cut off a team, with a priority list based initially on reverse draft order and then updated by each waiver claim going to the back of the line.

More questions:
Overall roster size? # of active players/pitchers? 1 DH?
1 DL spot as standard in yahoo? Only can use DL for a real life DL’d player?
7 inning minimum thrown per pitcher as standard in H2H? Other requirements for min/max innings, games played?

Sorry to bother you with a bunch of questions, but I’d rather ask now then later. I would be interested in a league where player scarcity makes for hard choices and more possible trades. Not so interested in an All-star league where everybody is comfortable with most their positions and hoards surplus talent.

So actually, I am too picky, I change my vote, it has to be a 12 team league and would much prefer if you could get 14. I think its a very cool idea, thanks for organizing. If you could give the actual numbers for roster spots, positions played, etc instead of just saying its whatever the standard yahoo league #s are I’d appreciate it.

by shankbone on Feb 13, 2012 2:49 PM PST up reply actions

Roster will be

C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, Util, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL

We’ll probably bump the minimum IP up to something like 25 total in your pitching staff, reachable but requiring you to use starting pitchers.

I believe you can only use the DL slot for actually DL players. You’ll have lots of room on your bench.

Not sure what you want me to do about the number of players available, but it’s going to be both-leagues. I would also prefer a larger league, so here’s hoping.

by GiantPain on Feb 13, 2012 4:21 PM PST up reply actions

Right on. I wouldn’t call a 5 player bench a lot of room, but that addresses the concern of hoarding players. I’ll grouse if its only 10 teams, but I’ve been wanting to try an obp league.

Yet another damn question – because I’ve never done H2H – you have 8 pitcher slots you have to fill, 2 SP, 2 RP and 4 of your choice. Doesn’t that become a poker game? When do you have to have your lineup set, and is there some bait and switch action going on there?

Anyways, I’m in, 10 or more, hoping for bigger.

by shankbone on Feb 13, 2012 5:31 PM PST up reply actions

You have to have each player in your lineup set before he plays that day

Once the game that that player is involved in starts that day, you can’t move that player.

by GiantPain on Feb 13, 2012 6:07 PM PST up reply actions

My mistake. I thought it was a set weekly lineup. So you can make adjustments to each category as the games play out to match your opponent, down in NSB’s, you pull your Giants, for example.

I spent like $40 on alcohol last night

So I guess I could spare it for a year’s worth of entertainment. I’m in.

Nice

We’re up to ~ 8 people right now. Steady progress.

by GiantPain on Feb 13, 2012 5:26 PM PST up reply actions

any possibility of us convincing you to use ESPN?? as much as I hate that network, over the years I’ve had too many problems with yahoo and espn just seems to be a much smoother interface. If we play on ESPN, then I am totally in.

I'm firmly in the yahoo camp

Hate ESPN’s fantasy setup. Tons of junk and littered with ads

interesting

i’ve heard you can customize more features on yahoo’s site, but i really dislike their setup. I feel like i’m taking crazy pills!

I’ve used Yahoo for years for other fantasy leagues (not baseball) and have really liked it.

Sorry, 'tis Yahoo

It’s always been the most popular and easy to use option. I hope it doesn’t keep you from playing!

I vote Yahoo.

Wow, thanks for setting it up

Like the format, and I love H2H. I’m a bit sad that Holds aren’t a category.

Also, 16 teams would be downright crazy.

I hope that I can play with you guys.

Proud of both my adopted son, Baggs, and my ward, Ryan LOLlis.

Small change:

Suggested by one of you guys. The winner of the regular season will get $40 in addition to whatever they win in the playoffs. If the person with the best regular season record gets 3rd, they get 80, if they get second, they get 120, if they get first, they get (first place money + 40). If they don’t place in the money in the playoffs, they get 40. I think the regular season winner should get a little something extra.

We're now up to 12 people, including me

I think once I get to 16 I’ll make a note in the fanpost that any further entrants will be wait-listed. I will then send out league and payment info to the 16 people I have registered, and hopefully they’ll all respond to both. If that doesn’t happen, I might invite some people up off the wait list.

by GiantPain on Feb 14, 2012 6:36 AM PST reply actions

Added a note to the top

I believe we are full up. I’ll be sending an email out to the people involved, but, fair warning, not everyone who sent in an email will be accepted, as I ended up getting a few extras, and, as I indicated, I’ll be giving greater preference to MCC regulars.

Hey GP

I was thinking about setting up a free Yahoo league for McC’ers, but I didn’t want to step on your toes before I read this thread. Now that it seems like a significant number of people have signed up, would it be cool to open up a thread for people interested in playing a free league?

I just ask because I didn’t want it to seem like I was trying to undercut this league or anything. I would totally do this if I had an extra $40 to spend, but unfortunately I don’t. (LOLcollege student)

Yeah, same boat here

I don’t have $40, but I want to play fantasy baseball with a good community. If you set up a new fantasy league, I’m in.
