2012 Adoption Draft: Who's In?

We're almost there! This is our sign-up thread. EVEN IF YOU SAID YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE BEFORE, PLEASE COMMENT HERE. It makes it easier for me, nvsfg, and Merope if we can just keep this kind of thing all in one place. Also, please calculate your draft points and put that in your comment. The formula we have decided on is: draft points=#comments + (20*#months of membership) + (35*#of FanPosts/FanShots). All of those are for McCovey Chronicles only, not SBN. We'll leave the window open for 5 days to make sure that everyone who wants to participate can. The draft will start sometime next week; most likely Friday.

So, to reiterate: comment on this post if you want to participate in the adoption thread, and include your draft points according to the formula above so we can build a draft order.

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

You've got to have more than that

you have lots of fanposts.

2012 is going to be awesome!

30 fanposts is only about 1000 points, sadly.

I guess you're right.

But I thought starting posts was supposed to weigh more. People who just say LOL to every Natto post will have more than the McCoven Newcomer Award Winner.

there ought to be a way to figure in other crap too. People organize minor league get togethers, Natto did the brick thing, fp’s organizing this mess.

I mean yeah, I do the McCoven and McCovey’s thing, but I doubt I’ll change my draft dude. I mean I adopted him, and that very year TSFGWTWS so…

I'm in.

I have 18,920 draft points.

(Where it says “FanPosts/FanShots” in the equation, I assumed we were counting our total number of both. If that is not correct, I can recalculate.)

Me too. I almost joined during the 2010 postseason run but I was too afraid that if I joined and they lost I would think that I jinxed them or something.

by WhatsAMataHari on Feb 11, 2012 4:11 PM PST up reply actions

I’ve lurked for a long long time. Mainly just reading Grant, but I noticed the uptick in discussions, just never thought about joining in.

Actually JCTgamer’s videos made me join. I think there was some link he published for members only and I loved his video, can’t remember exactly.

by shankbone on Feb 11, 2012 4:19 PM PST up reply actions

ditto!
I think I started lurking mid-season 2010, I was feeling terribly homesick and reading Grant’s articles did wonders because I could tell he was a fan, not just a journalist working for the llama overlords. But it was the comments that got me to jump in- the cake v. pie debates, the Doctor Who talk, the gifs, the game winning Tony Bennett sing-alongs, these were my kind of people! oh, and the giants baseball of course! ;)
I usually return to lurker status in the off season tho, I’m allergic to stats lol

I don’t particularly have a dog in this fight, but I think the coefficients for the months and the Fanposts/Fanshots—the latter in particular—is really underweighting their importance relative to comments. If I had to ballpark it, I think it’d be something more like 40 * months + 35 * Fanshots + 75 * Fanposts. The Fanposts are where a lot of interesting non-Grant discussion happens, and that takes significantly more thought and time than me typing “LOL CAL” or some such.

by speckops on Feb 11, 2012 4:11 PM PST reply actions

I suggested changing the fanpost/fanshot weighting to 5o in the rules thread, but nobody backed me up. That being said, I think it’s too late to change anything now due to inertia. We can try again next year.

Yeah, I missed the rules thread. I think without seeing people post their numbers, it’s a little abstract and difficult to judge. But there’s no way that I should have more draft points than you or Roger, for example—you guys are far more valuable members of the community than I am or ever will be.

Disadvantaged

I think season ticket holders are at a disadvantage, because we can’t comment on home game threads, while we are at the game. That leads to a low number of comments. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

And don’t tell me about an app for my phone. have you tried to use wifi or 3G at at&t park with 40,000 other people? LOL

In my research, I found out that I personally know one of the other unsigned picks. Which was kind of weird.

also, i couldnt find a post on when the draft will start. has it been set yet? aaaaand is there a reliable list of giants organization players we should refer to (like an acknowledged source)? im thinking for example when you play scrabble and you have to agree on a dictionary to use to determine whether a word counts? yea, that.

there is a list of current adoptees in the mcwiki

there’s this chart http://www.mlbdailydish.com/2012/2/7/2783329/san-francisco-giants-contracts-salaries-depth-chart-rosters-prospects-mlb
and there’s no requirement to take an actual player in the organization. LouSeal, the Foghorn, Crazy Crab, different members of the broadcasting team, electrical equipment and retired or deceased players have all been adopted at one time or another.

Adopted Giant: Eddie I Have It Grant.

Looks like I’d drop my draft position this year, and it won’t get much better than Chris Lofton.
I smell a breakout if they give him a shot in SJ.

Imagine you could have a do-over with Fred Lewis, without the bad routes and melancholy. I grant you Chris Lofton.

Community Poll

When should we start this thing? For me, it would be ideal if we could start it no earlier than Friday (LOLmidterms) but I understand that people probably don’t want to wait that long. I could definitely carve an hour or so out of my study schedule to set it up.

Thoughts?

Also, some housekeeping

HUGE hat tip to nvsfg and Merope for doing this, but here is a fully updated list of Giants already taken by McCoven. And a big thank you to Nivra as well for the list above, which I updated and organized into a Google Doc here.. It is not comprehensive, but its as good as I could do. I know it’s missing a few 2011 draftees, but I went by the rule that “if I don’t recognize the name, there’s a good chance no one else does either.”

and to the new drafters… remember it doesn’t HAVE to be a player. I think KnK and Baggs are available, Grant is available. Somebody could adopt the brick, or even Lou Seal’s mom or dad (usually only seen on mother’s day / father’s day) I think it might be neat to adopt the camera dude up in view reserved, the one who takes the splash hit pics and freezes his ass off … “Hi, I’m your adopted McCoven parent, here’s some cocoa. Matther Sartor, Scott Munter and Brad Boyer are no longer with the Giants, and I’m 99% certain that Craig Whittaker is also gone.

I also have a question about the current adoptee list. I count 16 people that are counted as owners of players that are no longer Giants. Are people really holding onto these players?

Ford (Darren), Holm, Hougesen, Kroon,
Mercedes (Simon), Schoop, Sosa, Suppan,
Tanner (Clayton), Tejada, Torres (Andres), Turpen,
Uribe, Velez, Wellemeyer, Wheeler (Zack)

Probably a stupid question, but...

Is the list of current players otherwise going to stay the same? Or will the Giants release some other minor leaguers leading up to the season?

Also, as far as people with non-Giants, I assume they are free to join the adoption draft. Otherwise, it would seem that they don’t have an adoptee any longer.

I find it hard to believe that people are holding onto Todd Wellmeyer, Miguel Tejada, Henry Sosa, Dan Turpen, Steve Holm and Caleb Hougesen (who never played a single inning in the org). I think we need to post all of the 16 players that I listed in my OP above and have the members confirm that they still want to keep them.

Notes for the Rules Post

All rules would need to be agreed upon prior to the draft. As for your questions, my opinions would be..

1) We allow dead Giants to be adopted. I don’t see why former Giants could not stay adopted.

2) If someone now has a “Non-Giant” player due to FA/trades/release/retirement and wants to draft, they need to voice that opinion here. We cannot update the list unless they chime in. Everyone has been given a fair amount of time to voice their preference of keeping or releasing their adoptee.

3) Since this is an all volunteer army at this point, I feel like we should just go with the proposed dates and run the draft. We could pick apart the draft and rules until July and there would likely still be folks we have not heard from.

The first discussions ( Fan Shots) on the 2012 Adoption Draft went up on December 29, 2011. Six weeks seems like a long enough period of visibility for those wanting to participate.

You’ve misunderstood my point. I’m with you on the rules, but my question was are we sure that none of those members have dhimed in over the past 10 days witht the desire to be a part of the draft?

Again, one man army. OK..more like one woman and two men. Merope is researching the posts to verify anyone that has given up their adopted Giant. I am taking her list and comments from the posts to publish what we know. Free FP is creating and posting the adoption threads.

We have given people ample time to voice their preference. Free FP has asked, Merope has asked, and I have asked. Short of knocking on their inbox and asking “Is anyone home” ? I’m not sure what else we can do.

I think next year this could be made even easier.

Sorta like this year, with one official thread, but …
(a) Start the rules thread 3-4 weeks before the draft so that the formula gets decided on.
(b)Start the official sign-up thread right after that ends and keep it on the rec list until it falls off.
© state categorically that anyone who doesn’t post in that thread doesn’t get in the draft
(d) state that all official declarations have to be a main comment on the thread and contain the points in the title, and not a reply to a sub-comment (should make it easier to actually see who’s declaring)

Interesting. I would’ve pegged him for Scottsdale.

by Nivra on Feb 14, 2012 12:43 PM PST up reply actions

I’d say it’s about 50/50, but i went positive based on the thought that they might want to keep Mejia and DeJesus together for familiarity and competition.

by Fla-Giant on Feb 14, 2012 2:32 PM PST up reply actions

Seriously? I think it’s 50/50 that he’ll be in the AZL. I think there’s no chance he’s anywhere above that.

by Roger on Feb 14, 2012 2:44 PM PST up reply actions

I think a lot depends on where Mejia ends up.

"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner

by Fla-Giant on Feb 14, 2012 2:46 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t think so at all. I think with DeJesus the options are back to the DSL or the AZL and I’d put the odds of those two things at 50/50. Mejia will obviously be here, so I’ll give him a 50/50 shot between being in the AZL and SK. there is absolutely no chance in the world that DeJesus gets promoted to SK. They’ll send Taylor Rogers back there to fill out the rotation before that happens.

by Roger on Feb 14, 2012 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

I’m a lot closer to Roger’s position than FLA. I think he most likely ends up AZL, but the possibility that he ends up in the DSL is higher than him ending up in SK.

by Nivra on Feb 14, 2012 4:14 PM PST up reply actions

Surprising

I’m surprised that you think DeJesus could go back to the DSL. I think that he’s got nothing left to prove there, and when you look at the Giants recent experience with top pitchers from the Caribbean you’ll see:

Kendry Flores: 1 yr in DSL (age 17), IP=66, stats very good, promoted to AZL following year
Lor. Mendoza: 1 yr in DSL (age 17/18), IP=61, stats good, promoted to AZL following year
Luis Angeles: 1 yr in DSL (age 20), IP=77, stats very good, promoted to AZL following year
Adalb. Mejia: 1 yr in DSL (age 18), IP=76, stats fantastic, promoted to ? following year
En. DeJesus: 1 yr in DSL (age 17), IP=47, stats fantastic, promoted to ? following year

Both Mejia and DeJesus have the added edge of having played in the DPL before the DSL and both have the physical size and frame to handle pitching lots of innings in the USA this
season.

"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner

by Fla-Giant on Feb 14, 2012 8:52 PM PST up reply actions

Sure but you see other things as well. Marvin Barrios and Ariel Hernandez (I’d say better than teammate Luis Angeles, even without considering the extreme difference in age) both had very good numbers in their age 17 seasons and were returned to the DSL at 18.

Bertoni Garcia had quite good and intriguing numbers in both his age 17 and 16 seasons and he never has been brought over, having just completed his 4th year in the DSL. Franklin Noel has been there 5 years despite some scintillating seasons (including back to back years with over 9.0 k/9 and an ERA below 0.50.

Miguel Ferrer was down there three years despite some nice numbers. Edward Concepcion was there three years (and when he was brought to the states he’d never put up good numbers in the DSL).

In the end the decision is a scouting one and not based on numbers at all, I suspect, and we’ve received no signs from the organization at all regarding DeJesus that would lead us to believe he’s on any kind of special development track (which skipping over AZL entirely would definitely be).

by Roger on Feb 15, 2012 5:48 AM PST up reply actions

Marte

Speaking of DSL pitchers, I was reminded by Joe Ritzo’s summation of the organization’s pitching (and anyone interested in these things should definitely read both of Ritzo’s two articles previewing the organization’s pitching and hitting, as he’s definitely getting a lot of the placement information from talks he’s had with Stanley and Evans), that one prospect I think we lost sight of in the CPL is Kelvin Marte. A lefty who throws hard and seems to have overcome arm troubles is definitely someone to watch.

He’s old, no doubt, but he was once upon a time a real good looking prospect, and any lefty who can pump it up there in the 90s is going to keep getting chances.

by Roger on Feb 15, 2012 5:53 AM PST up reply actions

I read both of Ritzo’s articles and they were interesting, although I was hoping for more specific info on the tools that the prospects posess rather than the rehashing of stats that he provided.

I like Marte as a prospect and have him ticketed for the starting rotation in Richmond. He’s one of those pitchers that always seems to pitch well, but almost always gets victimized by one bad inning every start.

One other prospect that Ritzo neglected to mention (perhaps ominously?) was Chuckie Jones.

Good Job & thanks

I wasn’t trying to stamp on your work. It was just that I was worried that some of the adopters with a limited knowledge of the farm system would be confused by that list. The original Daily Dish list that you were working from had several errors and made it look like prospects who played a few games in AAA and AA last season (due to emergency situations) would be on those higher level rosters to start the 2012 season. There seems to be a lot more adopters this year, so I have a feeling that we’ll be seeing a lot of the more obscure minor leaguers being adopted.

BTW, you have 1 error on your doc. At the bottom of the Augusta list you have Stephen Snodgrass listed with (Jack) as his last name.

scout, I believe you pick 2nd. I’m at work and the list is on my home computer (d’oh) but I’m certain you’re in the top 10.

If anyone wants to ask, I’d be glad to tell them (after I get off work, of course) but the truth of the matter is I had a midterm today and two more, one each on Wednesday and Thursday, and so it would just work best for me if we started the draft on Friday. In the meantime, I see no reason to allow the list to stay open.

Full, complete list will be ready to go when drafting starts. The rule last year, and the rule I intend to use this year, is that if you choose to get involved after drafting starts, you go to the bottom of the list no questions asked.

I expect the people to join between now and Friday to be more infrequent posters, so if you have a number in the top half or so I can tell you a two or three pick range that you’re likely to be in.

Do we have an official list of available players to be adopted? There are several docs floating around, but I think we should decide on an official doc and publish the link so that everybody will have someplace to look to see who is available when they’re on the clock.

by Fla-Giant on Feb 16, 2012 8:49 AM PST up reply actions

Define "complete" and state your preference for the list format. What is the error ?

Since FP is running the draft, he should probably tell me which type of document he wants to work from. The only error I can see so far is the GiantPain is not listed as keeping Pagan. Anything else I missed ? I don’t know if we can get perfect Fla, I can combine the lists this afternoon and post a link here and the list to the mcwiki. It would likely be best to format the list as a vertical worksheet that has the adopted parents and blanks next to available players so that it is easier to update as the draft progresses. I would prefer that I get some feedback from FP prior to posting an official list.

Multiple sets of eyes are preferred, but we all need to agree on the document format and tracking.

FP what document do you want to work from ? Do you have a listing that you want posted ? You can reply off line if you need to. Just tell me what you need me to do.

Complete: The first doc that I linked to in my comment wasn’t comlete, because it didn’t have a list staff, execs, retirees, and miscell. things that are currently unavailable. Although, I see that you’ve updated that doc now to include Staff & execs.

Errors: The 2nd doc that I linked to above has many errors and omissions. Everything from listing minor leaguers that are no longer in the org (Mattt Sartor, Craig Whittaker, Brad Boyer, …) to listing available adoptees as belonging to teams that are well above the level that they will be playing this season (Yarrow, Downing, Cuevas, Fleet, …)

The data looks good to me. I would suggest 2 things to prettify the way it looks:

1. Move the “Staff/Execs/Retired/Non-Giants/Other” column from the far right over to just before, or just after, the “MLB” column. That column contains so many names that are already adopted that I think it would be easier for it to be one of the first columns that people see when they open the doc.

2. Merge the AZL and DSL columns into 1 single column. Most of those players are on a fairly even stage of development, and by merging the 2 columns it will visually balance out the doc.
If you decide to do it that way you would have:

ROOKIE – AZL & DSL
(Unavailable) Marvin Barrios
(Unavailable) Sundrendy Windster
Alexis Almeida
Royel Astacio
Carlos Cartagena
Carlos Diaz
Noel Diaz
Rey Duran
Victor Feliz

Isn't the list kinda easy for the user to check?

Is the player/person/noun already adopted? If not you can adopt .

Rather than list all possible draft choices, which since it includes the entire system past and present, the press, the FO, the mascots, the idon’tevenknows is pretty hard to do, lets just make sure the list of adopted players is correct.

I think we really only NEED a list of adopted Giants that we can check against before we draft. A list of available players is nice to have and look at but not necessary.

Bye Travis and thanks for 2010! Good luck with the Brewers!

It was necessary last year, and this year’s draft has way more participants than last year’s. By the time we get to the last 25% of drafters people are going to need a source to see who is still available.

I see PacBellBooser still has Nate Schierholtz, but I haven’t seen the Boozer in these parts for quite a while (and he was on the list of absentee parents in a previous thread). If I missed him coming in to reclaim him, I’m super sorry to sully his name. Seems like the other names have been removed from the list.

I’d say Nate and Theriot are the best available players who may put up > 1 WAR. Affeldt and Mota after them.

Nate needs an active dad

There is gonna be a knife fight over getting Belt major league ABs, and Schierholtz needs someone in his corner. I would be pretty surprised if Nate dropped to my lowly draft spot.

The logic of starting Nate over Belt completely escapes me, though it does seem that the team is committed to it as a year opening philosophy.

by Roger on Feb 17, 2012 8:25 AM PST up reply actions

Or calling Nate the starting RF is yet again the kiss of death.

by shankbone on Feb 17, 2012 8:38 AM PST up reply actions

Depends on your perspective I suppose. Mine is that Nate actually being the starting RF is a pretty poisonous as well.

by Roger on Feb 17, 2012 9:47 AM PST up reply actions

As much as I love rooting for local guys, Nate has been monkeying around on the Gints roster for 5 years now, and has over 1100 MLB ABs. There is a strong chance he is who he is, 275/315/415 with good defense and a cannon of an arm.

Would more ABs tilt him up or knock him down? He may not get the chance to get that question answered.

Nate had a good year last year.

He had 2.5 WAR/650 PA last season, and he did that with negative defensive value.

His UZR/150 was -1.7 runs. His career UZR/150 is 10.7 runs.

Assuming his offense stays the same, and his defense regresses to career, he’d be worth 3.7 WAR/650 PA. Assuming his defense regresses to +5, he’d be worth 3.2 wins. Above league average.

Now, you may say that his 2011 offense was an aberration. He had a .327 wOBA while his career is .313. However, Bill James projects 2012 to be .328, and owlcroft has often said that fulltime play results in an increase in performance.

Even if we regress offense to his career of .313, it would cost him 8 runs/650 PA. So he would be worth 2.9 wins using his career UZR or 2.4 wins with only +5 UZR/150.

So using the worst regression assumptions we get 0.4 wins above league average and using the rosiest of regression assumptions we get 1.7 wins above league average.

by Nivra on Feb 17, 2012 10:02 AM PST up reply actions

I am very much on this side of the debate. Nate did a lot with regular playing time last year. It is probably to his disadvantage that most of the premium corner OF talent is in right field these days, but I don’t see him as particularly “poisonous to the team.” He’ll never be better than #6 hitter, but his defensive value makes him around a league average player as he approaches peak value.

Of Nate, Huff, and Melky, Nate is the one I am least concerned about getting playing time over Belt.

I promise not to argue incessantly about Brandon Crawford. Maybe.

by Solidarity on Feb 17, 2012 11:06 AM PST up reply actions

Which makes him a second division starter to me. Steve Young always says that in the playoffs every time you kick a FG you’re that much closer to losing. The baseball corollary for me is every starting position you give to a guy like Schierholtz puts you that much further from being a championship contending team. He’s an upgradeable player, we have a potential upgrade most likely playing in Fresno. To me that doesn’t make much sense.

by Roger on Feb 17, 2012 11:15 AM PST up reply actions

Yah... I'd have to disagree.

The problems with the lineup last year were the gaping holes at 1B, SS, 2B, C, UT.

If the Giants could have gotten league average from those four positions, they would’ve made the playoffs.

The problem will be Huff. 2011 Huff was nowhere near league average.

by Nivra on Feb 17, 2012 12:29 PM PST up reply actions

fight fight fight!

Bye Travis and thanks for 2010! Good luck with the Brewers!

by kennv on Feb 17, 2012 1:43 PM PST up reply actions

My point:

2011 Huff: -0.6 WAR in 580 PA
2011 SS: 0.9 WAR in 940 PA
2011 2B: 0.5 WAR in 930 PA (-0.5 WAR in 670 PA after Franchez)
2011 C: 2.6 WAR in 650 PA (1 WAR in 450 PA after Buster)
2011 UT not included above:
3B: .2 WAR in 461 PA

Total after Franchez/Posey: 1 WAR in 3100 PA.
If we had gotten league average in those 3100 PA, say 2 WAR/650 PA, that would have netted 9.5 more wins, easily enough to get the Giants past the D-backs in the playoffs.

Baseball isn't football

Hell, baseball isn’t any other major sport. Much, much different dynamic. Not only do I think that what applies in playoff football probably has no corollary to regular season baseball, as much as I like Steve Young he’s not exactly a statistical analyst. Plenty of great players have little idea what actually matters in the game, and the best irony of all is that Young’s own 49ers won a lot of games with field goals last year. His opinion certainly isn’t worthless and he is one of the smarter guys I’ve heard speak, but I prefer numbers to platitudes.

As for RF, it’s possibly an upgradeable position. But every year that we don’t look at Schierholtz as an option is another one wasted. We should have just given him the RF job going into 2008, and then we should have given it to him in 2009, and then last year he set a career high in ABs, WAR, and wOBA (excepting 20 games in 2008). The fact that the FO/manager screwed up by putting useless veterans in RF for several seasons doesn’t mean we should keep doing that. Considering we’ve got Belt for several more seasons, and it’s not impossible he needs more time in AAA, I would rather make sure Schierholtz can’t handle RF before giving Belt that job, particularly considering Belt might be better utilized in LF or at 1B. IMO, considering things like service time and ML-readiness, I would rather put a guy like Nate in right and put Belt in the minors to start the season, and then make changes if necessary. If they’re both capable of being productive starters, TBH I’d rather put Schierholtz in right because Belt can make use of time in Fresno. Nate’s as ready as he’s ever going to be, and the same might not be true of Belt.

But why should they have made him a starter in 2008 or 2009 when nothing he does suggests that he’ll ever be an above average starter in RF? He’s a classic tweener with no power for the corner and not enough speed for center. He doesn’t get on base well, he doesn’t hit well, and I personally think his defensive abilities are somewhat overstated around here. He’s certainly sure handed but I’m not sure his range is really exceptional. In other words, he’s a prototypical UT OF. But he’s hardly a championship profile and starting him just gives you another position where you’re below average. Nivra’s point that Huff was a bigger problem last year is obviously true, but I’ll believe Huff not starting when I see it personally, and Huff’s history at least suggests there’s a possibility he can be productive. Schierholtz’ does not.

by Roger on Feb 18, 2012 10:25 AM PST up reply actions

But why should they have made him a starter in 2008 or 2009 when nothing he does suggests that he’ll ever be an above average starter in RF?

You missed my point where Schierholtz is above average.

I projected offense and defense based on 4 scenarios, above, and all of them point to him as above average.

He was above average last year, with 2.5 WAR/650 PA.

He’s been above average for his career with 2.6 WAR/650 PA.

Maybe you don’t buy UZR which has him at +18.9 runs saved on defense for his career, but DRS also has him at +14 runs. Using that instead would dock him 5 runs over his career, which would keep him above average at 2.3 WAR/650 PA.

by Nivra on Feb 18, 2012 10:40 AM PST up reply actions

That being said, I can see the following reasoning:

(1) Huff will start, come seagulls, tornadoes, or tsunamis.

(2) Melky and Pagan are in the same boat.

(3) Belt is projected to produce 4 WAR/650 PA.

(4) Nate is projected to produce 3 WAR/650 PA.

(5) Therefore, the Giants gain a win by starting Belt over Nate.

However, that’s really missing the point that Huff shouldn’t be starting, that either Melky or Pagan might bomb, and that Nate is above average, and is a very serviceable RF starter.

by Nivra on Feb 18, 2012 10:44 AM PST up reply actions

Because he posted a .393 wOBA in Fresno at 23. And the Giants were coming off a season where they’d lost 91 games and finished last. Then they lost 90 games in 2008 while Schierholtz put up a .403 wOBA. While Winn was a good player in 2008, he was just terrible in ’09 (offensively at least) and a free agent in 2010 when he got even worse. There was no sense in playing a pending FA in RF every goddamn day when they had a 24-year-old tearing up Fresno that might hold down that job for awhile.

The argument against Schierholtz also applies to Belt, and it’s the exact same run-around that’s been annoying us all year. Belt’s history isn’t much more indicative of production than Nate’s; they both tore up the minors at similar ages then came up and hit decently in limited and sporadic playing time. Belt is just Nate from four years ago.

by quincy0191 on Feb 18, 2012 1:15 PM PST up reply actions

It’s not the same because scouts love Belt’s swing (and approach) and they always disliked Nate’s. It’s long and slow. He has to start it early to catch up to good velocity (and as a result gets fooled alot) and still doesn’t generate consistent power with it and doesn’t square balls up well.

IMO scouts trump stats when it comes to minor leaguers (essentially because you can compile very good numbers without ever having major league tools). The two players aren’t the same.

by Roger on Feb 20, 2012 6:34 AM PST up reply actions

Not the same

But similar. Scouts may not have liked his swing, but they can’t argue he got results with it, and that he’s never really gotten a shot at a starting gig. His defense has always been good enough, and the idea that he could hit is not ridiculous. I don’t see why that’s not worth trying out, particularly when Pagan, Cabrera, and Huff leaving in 2013 means we’ll almost certainly be looking for OF bats (with Belt at first). If he’s not hitting after a month or two, then he can go back to the bench and Belt can come up and play every day. But with so many uncertainties (Huff, Cabrera, Pagan) it seems prudent to explore every option.

Lorenzo Mendoza's name almost rhymes. It's so close he can taste it. Sometimes it keeps him up nights.
