No idea. Crazy to have him over Panik, IMO.

I can’t believe Gillaspie still cracks anyone’s top 10.

Might not have him top 10
But he hit .297/.389/.453 in Fresno at 23. He’s never been below-average in a full season, and consistently shows good peripherals. Even if he’s not good defensively, the possibility of an .800 OPS can’t be ignored. Maybe he won’t be a first-division starter, but he’s worth a regular gig somewhere. I really think he’s getting overlooked around here – most of the rest of the top ten has at least a year to screw themselves (in most cases longer) and he looks major-league ready.

I find the lack of faith in Gilaspie here disturbing. Any time I bring up his markedly improved fielding, someone rambles on about scouts or how they saw him two years ago and he looked stiff.

I would really like him as a prospect
if he could play SS or 2b.
If he could play SS
He’d be a top 100 prospect. And he’d be the starting SS next year.

Would he be considered a better prospect than Tyler Pastornicky?

God, no
Pastornicky just had a great (tiny sample) performance at AAA and he’s two years younger. But if Peguero can make someone’s top 100 then Gillaspie as a SS definitely ought to (same age, Gillaspie would be playing a more important position and showed better offense).

Yeah, that’s why I ask. Pastornicky wasn’t on most of the Top 100s if I recall correctly (I’m too lazy to check ‘em all though). Then again, they’re so subjective, and especially toward the end of the list, there’s a lot of justifiable choices. Gillaspie as a shortstop would definitely be an example.

I think at least part of that is questions about his ability to stay at short – if Pastornicky isn’t viewed as a true SS by the evaluators then he won’t get that boost. In this hypothetical scenario Gillaspie would stick at SS; he wouldn’t necessarily be good, but we wouldn’t be looking to move him off the position anytime soon. Pastornicky doesn’t really profile the same way.

Speaking of which
(Top 100s that is), Kevin Golstein’s list had Brown at #18, third highest OF on the list if I’m not mistaken, behind only Harper and Trout! The bad news of course is that he’s the only Giant on the list. The opposite scenario is the Padres, who have an incredible 10 players on the list though the highest of those is #38. I prefer the upside, still they’ve built up incredible system depth in the last two years.
That’ll happen when you trade your best players for prospects, then trade some of those best prospects for more prospects.
/a little scared of what their system will look like when they repeat the cycle again.

He can surely play 2B as well as Todd Walker, and hit around the same level, though I see Gillaspie as potentially having more patience at the plate and otherwise having the same offensive profile.

Wow
A truly shizophrenic list, IMO. It’s almost as if several different people put it together.
Susac, Sanchez and Crick way too low, Dominguez and Gillaspie way too high. And, seriously, Galindo and Gregorio ahead of Susac and Sanchez is just crazy talk.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if several people put it together, good call. They just decided to roll out to 20 that’s 300 new guys to add. Is Mayo that familiar with each system?
Well, I mean, it’s his job. He should be that familiar.

No doubt that he gets input from several scouts and/or talent evaluators when he makes these lists, but he’s still responsible for merging those thoughts into a coherent package. I’m not saying that the list is ridiculous or laughable, just that it seems to be going in several different directions at once. To be fair to Manuel, this is a very difficult system to evaluate right now, because so many of the best prospects aren’t well known and haven’t played above A ball.

Oh, alright, I'll say it
It’s ridiculous AND laughable. Maybe he’s a really bad dart-thrower?

Weird list
mixes apples and oranges—-low minors prospects still wet behind the ears with high minors prospects who have some performance numbers.

Dominguez
Should be about 20 ranks lower

I don't know if I should be happy or insulted...
…that this is the only other list other than mine putting Peguero at #2.
Hector Sanchez so low? Kyle Crick so low? Joan Gregorio anywhere???
Yea, I agree. Wow. Just wow.

I’ve been reading and watching a lot of Ricky Oropesa lately and I think he’s my new favorite prospect dude hits bombs
I see he’s 22 already though so hopefully he can tear it up and move through the system quick

In an effort to play devils advocate, ...
I think it is defensible, if you make the following assumptions:
1) new draftees heavily penalized because they haven’t played a full season. This even applies to Panik’s, though he gets penalized less.
2) overweight Sanchez’s poor AAA performance ignoring his relative age to league.
That would drop Susac, Crick, Oropesa, Osich all down, shifting players like Dominguez/Conor into the top10.
Then how do you explain Blackburn at #11 and Gregorio at #12? Do their short stints in the AZL really trump Crick’s even shorter stint there? Do their short stints in the AZL really trump Galindo’s season in the NWL and Hector’s many years of pro ball and great results in A+ ball last season? Not to mention that I would rate Susac’s time in the Cape Cod League as higher competition than what Blackburn and Gregorio faced in the AZL.
