This anouncement is 4 days old and snuck past all of us. The Giants have signed a middle infielder from this year's IFA class for a reported $115K. Here's the info that I currently have.
Raiby Barias: 2B/SS, RHH, Bani, D.R. (6'1", 185) DOB=9/29/95
Trainer: Rafael ("Spilman") Montero
Barias turned 17 just under a month ago, so he's one of the oldest prospects in this year's IFA class. If he had been born 30 days sooner he could have been signed at the end of August 2011 instead of starting on July 2, 2012. Barias played in the Dominican Prospect League during the 2011/2012 season and was named a 2012 DPL All-Star and selected to the DPL Elite Travel Team that came to the USA and played in spring training camps in Florida and Arizona during March 2012.
PG.com's scouting report from May 2012:
PG Grade: 8.5
Barias has solid middle infield actions and tools, with his best single tool being his raw arm strength. He’s a bit awkward in his exchange and arm action but they work for him and he makes the routine plays without any problem. His right handed swing comes from a high hand set and is somewhat rotational, but he stays on a line-drive plane with the ball and has some present bat speed. He’s a 7.23 runner right now and doesn’t have the athletic stride to project to get much faster as he gets stronger, so shortstop range could become a question. Barias is a solid player but it’s a testament to the overall quality of the DPL talent that he falls near the bottom of this prospect list.
