Quick Poll
While staring at the Anthony Rizzo trade and waiting for it to make sense like one of those Magic Eye thingies, a poll question popped into my head. Between the Jason Kubel signing/Parra demotion, the Rizzo trade, the Cuddyer signing, the Hairston/Ellis/Kennedy utility jamboree in Los Angeles, and the Giants' ... whatever this offseason was, this is a fair question to ask.
And I'm not sure there's a right answer, either.

I vote Not-Dodgers.
All of the rest of the NL West FO are really good at one thing and mediocre-to- horsecrap at everything else.
Mark DeRosa , he had his moments.
See I was thinking Dodgers only because they are going to be sold right? which many times means new front office …. they are all a rather less than stellar group.

Looking at odd things
DBacks have had 3 good builds (RJ era, Webb\Haren era\ Upton era) in the time Giants have had 2 (Bonds era, and now).
Their new GM came in last year, fixed the pen and took a last place team into first. But I think the real money is their executive team. They seem to really know baseball. There was a reason in the early Dbacks era they went after Sandburg, Matt Williams, Randy Johnson, even Buck Showalter. They have old school grit and work well in new school world.
But if you want to just cherry pick one signing, then go for it. Barry Zito.

First version of DBacks ownership went after vets and threw money at Schilling and Johnson. Both Schilling and Johnson basically carried that 2001 team on their backs throughout the playoffs (see, you can win with just pitching. And Luis Gonzalez). Can’t really say it was smart management as it was just a lot of check throwing

We did? According to who, Boras?
I only saw two “journalist” reports … one quoted a “major league source” and the other was not attributed. No confirmation/denial from either FO. Anyone have anything else?
That whole scenario reeked of a failed Boras play.

I don't get the love for Towers
This offseason, Towers signed:
Hill 2/$11 milllion
2 backup MIs: Bloomquist 2/$3.8 million and MacDonald 2/$3 million
(with Blum under contract for $1.35M)
Kubel for 2/$15 milion when they already have Parra
Those four signings equals $16.4 million a year for the next two years with a current payroll of $45 million.
Diamondbacks did well last year but Towers basically got some bullpen guys and the remainders were players he inherited.

If Sabean signed those guys for a third of the Giants’ budget, then, yes, I imagine there would be a real problem.
As it stands, people aren’t too enamored with the money Sabean did spend.
Sure
but we’re talking 1) the signing of one extra lefty and 2) talent evaluation as to Pagan/Melky v. Torres/Beltran. Not to mention all those issue basically go away next year.

The bulk of the payroll/roster was pretty well settled for the Diamondbacks. Their cheap talent is pretty damned great. Our cheap talent is, for the most part, no longer that cheap. Towers spent 1/3 of his team’s payroll on spare parts (or, in baseball terms, “complimentary pieces”) and “hole-plugging”, while the Giants are spending nearly that percentage on Zito, Rowand and Huff.
That makes no sense
if you have 1/3 of the budget to spend, you shouldn’t hole plug. You should sign someone who is going to make an impact on the team.

This
If Magowan was responsible the Zito/Rowand signings, then he is culpable. If not, the blame falls on Sabean.
As much as I dislike some (many) of Sabean’s moves, there is NO WAY he signs Zito for 7 years at $127M. That was a McGowan move, clear and simple; a PR move that he has slipped past us as the savior of the Giants disappears. Conveniently. Maybe they were going to Tampa, maybe not, but Zito and Rowand signings (as CalBear points out) are indefensible. And they were at the time of the signings.
Don't believe everything you think.
re Zito signing
It’s so much easier to bid when you know everyone else’s bids.
Putting a roster together is a inexact science, very good GMs swing and miss often.
In response to how huge the Zito contract was
Right because none of the top payroll teams have horrible contracts.
so the Giants are basically par for the course.
All I said was that the Giants are in line with other teams in offering bad contracts.
How is that not defending the signing?
You’re not saying it’s a good signing; you’re not even saying it’s not a bad signing, but you’re saying "mistakes are going to happen, and it’s no worse than other people’s mistakes. That’s defending it.

Yeah, when you put it that way it doesn’t seem so bad. But then when you realize those moves basically constitute all the financial flexibility the Giants had this offseason and they could have probably have acquired an impact bat with that money, then it seems much worse.

I wonder whether Sabean was as surprised as we were that mgmt wasn’t going to give him any money to play with.
Perhaps, but I think it’s something he probably still knew going into the offseason. That’d be hilarious if he picked up Affeldt’s option, and then they told him he had $10 MM more to play with.

The rest of the league laughs at this division
and rightfully. There’s a lot of talent on the crew with chimps in pirate hats at the helm. Cute and may potentially bite your face off, but overall not threatening.
Last year was the first year since 2006 the NL West didn’t send a team to the NLCS.
The Central divisions are the runts of the league.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
The division has also been home to 10 of the last 13 Cy Young award winners; Johnson (4), Gagne (1), Webb (1), Peavy (1), Lincecum (2), Kershaw (1). The other winners are Clemens, Carpenter, and Halladay.
This division has its shortcomings, but there are a few thing is does incredibly well, and for the last half decade it has easily been been better than Houston, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Louis.
Another example: over the last 5 years, the Central has produced 12 teams over .500 (out of a possible 60), and four of those were the Cardinals. The East prouced 13 (out of a possible 45). The West produced 15 (out of a possible 45).
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Wait, how are there so few teams over .500? Interleague and the AL East? Skewed distribution?
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
Well first of all, I had a serious brain fart with math. That should be 30 and 25. That’s a pretty obvious, stupid error on my part, so sorry for that. Anyway, 60% of NL West teams, 55% of NL East teams, and 40% of NL Central teams finished over .500. As a whole, the league produced 40 teams over .500, or 50%.
As for the AL, they produced 34 seasons of better than .500, 17 of which were by the AL East. The West produced 9 (out of 20), and the Central produced 8 (out of 25) That’s out of 70 total seasons, but there were two seasons of exactly .500. So, it pretty much carves out to a 50-50 split in the AL, too.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Ok, that makes much more sense. I mean, it’d be possible, but you’d have to have a really skewed distribution.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
SI’s write up of the NL West before the ‘11 season was how the division is what it is because everybody puts such an emphasis on pitching that there’s not a lot of runs being scored and every team has just enough good pitching (well, maybe not the Rockies) to constantly make the division close
by Dingoes Ate My Baby on Jan 9, 2012 11:01 AM PST up reply actions
It’s a pretty odd generalization, given that the division produced the bottom two run-scorers in the league, but also two of the top four.

this was at the start of last season so it’s based on old numbers. And the Rockies, of course, were seen as fluky but their pitching was thought to be better than it was

Not sure what team you're refering to
Doug Melvin took over for the Brewers in 2003 and inherited a terrible team. I think he’s done alright, turning them into a 500ish team from 2005-2007 and then 3 90+ seasons since then.
Jocketty had decent years with the Cardinals and took over GM of the Reds in April of 2008. I don’t think he’s done an awful job since then. I could be forgetting stuff though.
by GuyWhiteyCorngood on Jan 9, 2012 9:47 AM PST up reply actions
Just going off of the historical record we have to look at. The Brewers have built a strong team, but traded a lot of their farm system to get there and there’s some speculation that the Grienke trade was an indication that their window is closing. The Reds may turn into a perennial contender, but we’ve yet to see that solidify. The young pitching that got them there in 2010 regressed heavily in 2011, they’ve had to move some pieces, and there’s speculation that they won’t be able to hold onto Votto.
The Cubs and Astros have have brief flashes of competency in the last half decade or so, and a lot of futility. And the Pirates continue to scuffle. Meanwhile, the Cardinals keep turning in winning seasons on the shoulders of beating bad competition. It’s a division that’s more chaff than wheat, probably the worst in the sport until proven otherwise.

I am not so sure that the Reds are for real, especially after the Latos trade. The Brewers are good, but I could see them coming back to earth in as few as two years.
I’m more comfortable saying that they’ve been bad than I am saying that they are good.

No more unfair than people making the same accusations about the NL West, or praising the NL East.
For the last half-decade, it’s been the softest division in the sport. That might be different in 3-5 more years when Theo’s had time to get the Cubs pointed in the right direction, and there’s nothing to stop them from doing well next year, but I remain skeptical of the division supporting more than one or two good teams at a time, and with the Astros leaving after this year, their wild card chances will diminish significantly.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong

The Niners haven’t really attempted to score more than they need to in pretty much every game this year. The one game they ran away with, they only threw the ball 19 times. They didn’t want all those points. The Bucs just said, “here, have some points,” and the 49ers said, “Aw, shucks.”

Playing at home helps
But I’m not too optimistic. I’m not sure the Saints can be stopped even by a good defense, and I’m not sure the Niners can score much even against a bad defense.
Niners scored 30+ against Seahawks, Tampa and the Rams.
They scored in the mid-20s against Dallas, Detroit (@ Det), and the Giants.
I guess the question is how much of that scoring resulted from the defense and ST being really good.
Pressure on Brees is the key.

Really I think the key is Gore
Saints’ defense against the run is pretty bad. If the Niners can exploit that, they should win the game, because the defense should be able to at least keep NO from scoring 30.
The Niners scored at least 20 points in every one of their home games, and allowed more than 20 points at home only once (the loss to the Cowboys).
They Saints didn’t fare that well against decent defensive teams on the road.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
The only thing I see happening that will work against the 49ers is the graphic about how amazing they are at forcing turnovers and their + / – being best in the league… and then they have a bunch of turnovers themselves… I don’t imagine they’ll be able to pick off Brees many times or force too many fumbles, but, hey, it IS at home and they ARE the Saints (to some degree)…
Brees is accurate, but it’s not like he never gives up the ball.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Sure, but — as a fan, at least — I don’t bank on more than 1 INT by the defense. That’s not to say I think Brees will throw all over them, but he will very likely have more than 300 yards passing.
Yeah. But when you factor in QB pressure, tearing a ball out from Sproles, Thomas, or Ivory, punching a ball out from Colston or Graham… there are a lot of ways the Niners can get to the ball.

The last time you brought this up, I suspect you had to leave early since it was NYE. This is what I posted then:
They’ve improved by acquiring Quentin, but have you checked out the BABIPs of the position players who ranked #2, #3, and #4 by fWAR last year? Hundley (catcher): .362. Headley: .368. Guzman: .360. There’s really no reason to expect that they’ll sustain those rates. Rizzo might improve, but if they’re going to give Guzman time, they’d have to put him in the OF.
We’re getting a major contributor back (Posey), a solid contributor relative to the dreck we’d throw out there (Sanchez), and something in between a deadcat bounce and decent production (Huff). I could be wrong, but I don’t recall the Padres suffering any such catastrophic injuries/letdowns last year.
Yes, usually the top guys by WAR are going to have good BABIPs because of selection bias. But probably not that much above what I would expect. And then they traded Rizzo. I don’t think Alonso is all that good.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
I don't think they're going to get a solid contribution from Freddy Sanchez
on account of multiple DL stints, if not a season-ending injury that, that he will likely endure.
Yeah, I may have been a bit off with that. My point is that I think we’re going to get a substantial amount of regression (the way we want), whereas the Padres are going to get a substantial amount of regression leading to fewer runs.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
I believe that the Padres will score about as many runs as they did last year.
The regression you talk about offset by the acquisition of better offensive players.
I also believe the Giants will score about as many runs as they did last year.
The regression you talk about offset by aging, reliance on injured players, and inefficient allocation of playing time.

It counts to the extent that you're "returning" them at high levels of production and playing time.
Returning Sanchez doesn’t count for anything if he gets hurt again or plays poorly. Ditto for Posey.

Sure
2012 Padres Rizzo would have hit better than 2011 Padres Rizzo.

The Padres would have improved their 1B production with either of them. Probably moreso with Rizzo than Alonso, but either of them will improve the production.

I’m suspicious about how much we’re going to “get back” from Posey or Sanchez. Huff will probably get a bit better, but he’ll likely be worse than what we could get out of Belt, who he’ll play over.

Those three guys I mentioned totaled something like 1,000 PAs for the Padres, if memory serves, with a BABIP about .050 higher than would be expected. That’s about 50 hits. That’s a huge amount of regression down.
My point is that, if anything, there should be a moderate uptick in the Giants run production, and a probably pretty large dropoff in the Padres. I could easily see that bridging a 23 run gap.

I'm really not sure why the Padres aren't running away with this
I mean, just look at what Byrnes has done in just a few months.
Traded nothing for Huston Street.
Traded nothing for Carlos Quentin.
Traded Latos for Grandal, Volquez, Alsonso, Boxburger.
Traded Rizzo and Caters for Cashner and Na.
The first two, in terms of value recieved for value relinquished, are pretty clear wins for San Diego, and both those guys could theoretically be flipped at the deadline if needed.
The Latos trade I’d call a marginal win for the Padres. Hard to ever “win” a trade where you lose your best pitcher, but they got back a lot of value in guys who will be with them for years to come.
I’d give the win for the Rizzo trade to the Cubs, but it wasn’t that bad for the Padres.

With the resources (both financial and talent already signed/playing) I think the Giants have the best of the lot.
It’s a safe summary to say that the vast majority of the pissing going on around here during the offseason hasn’t been about how terrible things ARE, but rather how easily they could have been improved to varying degrees of domination in the coming year, but weren’t.
Last year was a black hole of suck plagued by injuries to key players and near-simultaneous regression to (and maybe past?) the mean for several others.
On paper, our Opening Day lineup should have been expected to contend deep into the season. The fact that it took so long for us to be eliminated using the schmoes who actually DID play the majority of the season is a minor miracle.
On paper, we already have enough of the pieces to be contenders in our division this year, without needing to rely on unreasonable resurgences from Posey or Sanchez. But damned if we didn’t have a few chances to really shore up our chances, but didn’t.

Under Barr’s guidance since 2008, the Giants have drafted impact players like 2010 Rookie of the Year Buster Posey. In addition, Barr has drafted top prospects Zachary Wheeler, who earned the 2009 Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year award, as well as hard-hitting backstop Tommy Joseph and speedster Gary Brown with their 1st overall pick in 2010.
Barr, who was instrumental in the selection and signing of current All-Star catcher Russell Martin as well as relievers Jonathan Broxton and Scott Proctor during his 10-year stint as the Dodgers East Coast scouting supervisor, will begin his 27th season as a baseball executive in 2010. He has served as a scouting director for the Baltimore Orioles (1989-90) and New York Mets (1994-97), while also working as the assistant general manager for the San Diego Padres (1991-93). After entering the baseball front office ranks in 1984 with the Mets as an administrative assistant to the minor leagues and scouting, the Audubon, NJ native became the East Coast scouting director for the Minnesota Twins in 1988.
The 53-year-old Barr was also responsible for selecting Mike Mussina (1990) and Ben McDonald (1989) with the Orioles’ first-round draft picks, while also tabbing Paul Wilson for the Mets in 1994. During his tenure as the scouting director for the Mets, he also picked right-handed pitcher A.J. Burnett, along with outfielders Jay Payton and Terrence Long.
Barr was inducted into the Mid-Atlantic Scouts Hall of Fame in November of 2008 and was inducted into the Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame during the summer of 2009.

related note. tidrow and evans kept sabean from seeing lincecum until right before he was drafted because they knew sabean would have nixed it based on his prejudices against non-cookie-cutter players. I thought this was pretty well known. and laughed about publicly after Lincecum’s first Cy Young.
by Roy Hobbs Jr on Jan 9, 2012 11:48 AM PST up reply actions
Just totally false
They kept Sabes away because they didn’t want to tip their hand that Timmy was their #1 guy. Having the #10 pick, the Giants knew that they were going to have to dodge some bullets in order for Timmy to still be on the board when they picked. If Tidrow loves a pitcher, Sabes isn’t going to overrule him unless it’s a money issue. Tidrow also was the first guy to spot MadBum when scouting for the 2007 draft.

Anyways, I’m ashamed to say that I’m not only here to say hi but to beg for homework help (though I’ll gladly stick around to discuss food). I missed a lecture an am apparently now paying for it. Chem is evil. Anyone?

This is like the o-chem half of undergrad general chem. So 500 people get droned at in a lecture all and the TAs never actual talk to the professor. Meh. But anyways…
Design a procedure to prepare 70 ml of .20 M potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution (KH2PO4) and 70 ml of .20 M dipotassium hydrogen phosphate solution (K2HPO4) from the solids.
It’s probably less interesting than chair formations. I’ll come back with those later. I don’t want anyone to do the problem outright, but someplace to start would be helpful.
Vroom. Walks. Five positions. Justin Christian
I've been fully suckered into the Twitterverse. Oops.
Bah...think I have it.
And now I feel like an idiot. But just to check…for KH2PO4…
You end up needing ~2 grams of solid which you then just mix with X amount of water. Would you be expected to calculate the amount of water too or do you just measure it out?
This is a prelab, by the way. One more thing after this that will hopefully be pretty quick.
Vroom. Walks. Five positions. Justin Christian
I've been fully suckered into the Twitterverse. Oops.
It's probably a stupid question.
Um, so can you dissolve 2 grams of whatsit in say 40 ml (arbitrary number) of water and then just add water into the beaker until you hit 70? Or should/can you calculate the amount of water you need to dissolve 2 grams of whatsit in order to up with 70 ml of solution? Or should I just stop thinking and write “Dissolve 2 grams of KH2PO4 into water.”
Vroom. Walks. Five positions. Justin Christian
I've been fully suckered into the Twitterverse. Oops.
Once the solute has fully dissolved into solvent, all you need to worry about is adding solvent until you hit the desired point (and hopefully the solute dissolves before 70 mL). Thus, your first answer should be sufficient (the arbitrary point is when the solute has fully dissolved).
Thanks! One more thing if you’re still around and then I’ll go back to a subject that I actually know something about…so I’ve got a table of stuff here…same compounds, different volumes…one of them being…
Solution #2 :15.00 ml of .1 M K2HPO4, 5.00 ml of .1 M KH2PO4, and 30.00 ml of water…
Is this a buffer and how do I know that?
Vroom. Walks. Five positions. Justin Christian
I've been fully suckered into the Twitterverse. Oops.
Going by the context of the experiment I kinda figure that all of the solutions are buffers. But I’m not sure I can write that up as my logic in the pre-lab.
Vroom. Walks. Five positions. Justin Christian
I've been fully suckered into the Twitterverse. Oops.
I mean, from a semantics point of view, everything is technically a buffer. It’s just a matter of what pH you’re operating at. But in this case, it’s definitely a buffer because those are a conjugate acid/base pair: one of them is simply the deprotonated form of the other.
It’d be like adding acetic acid (CH3COOH) and sodium acetate (CH3COONa): the acetate is simply the deprotonated form of the acid, so that makes it a buffering solution.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
So that would apply to all of the ones that contain both compounds then, yes?
What about…at the bottom and top of this table here I’ve got…
- 20ml K2HPO4 and 0ml KH2PO4 and
- 0ml K2HPO4 and 20ml KH2PO4
Are those not buffers since they only have an acid or a base respectively?
Vroom. Walks. Five positions. Justin Christian
I've been fully suckered into the Twitterverse. Oops.
Yeah, they’d probably not be terrific buffers since there’s no conjugate acid/base.

It's hard to say
A year ago I’d have said Joseph would be traded for sure because the club seems to place such a (largely unjustified) premium on catcher defense. But the reports about Joseph’s defense this year were pretty overwhelmingly positive, so I’m not sure what to think now.

Keep Susac and Hector, trade Joseph. Joseph has the youth and powr bat to bring back a major league caliber hitter or some pitching prospects. Sabes has to keep close attentioin, though, as Joseph might be at the peak of his value right about now (he has the distinct possibility of laying an egg on offense in Richmond this year).

In my international management class...
we did a bunch of case studies. And we were consistently reminded by the professor that “Do nothing” is and most likely always will be an option.
It is pretty clear the Giants FO chose the “do almost nothing” route this offseason.
Now I always chose the “do nothing” route for the case studies and tried to convince the professor I was confident that my managers in China were competent enough to fix the intellectual property protection problem or it would cost more for security in South America than the cost to keep our offices in North America.
But those were excuses. I chose “do nothing” because it was the easy way out and I was lazy in college.
What the hell is the Giants’ FO’s excuse?

There is 40 mil in dead money (Rowand, Zito, Huff)
There is 30-40 (more maybe) free to try to lock up Tim and Matt long term
They traded 3 guys to fill 2 OF spots
There is only so much wiggle room from those first 2 factors alone. Good news is that money will be free within 2 years.

Do we consider performance prior to their current position in this?
Because Towers in SD looked brilliant, but I don’t know how much I like the moves of AZ Towers. And Brynes in AZ was awful (or maybe he wasn’t – who was it that shipped Haren out? Was it Brynes or his interim replacement?), and I kind of like the things SD Brynes is doing.
I’m almost tempted to say Rockies, because in that scenario Cain, Lincecum, and Bumgarner would all be signed to massive 10 year extensions, and I like Giants teams with those guys on them.

It's not that unlikely

In spite of Sabean’s best rhetoric, the Giants will loose Lincecum or Cain. The question, then, becomes how the team will deal with it.

Giants really are screwed either way. If they sign Cain, they can’t sign Lincecum, unless they extend Lincecum this off-season. If they still re-sign Cain, then they can’t afford anybody else, as per club policy. So, the Giants will have another year of the same players or more expensive, average filler to go with the pitching. I say all this because I still can’t fathom a scenario where the Giants suddenly surrender to starting positions to rookies (brown and panik in ‘13) without $1 million+ backup plans (more like primary plans). They don’t have the flexibility to deal with any of this, financially, and they don’t have the creativity to work within the inflexibility.
Of course, it always comes down to the players on the field, and, so, we just have to hope like hell that Buster is a 4+-win player his entire career and that Pablo Sandoval is not some BABIP Master and that Belt gets playing time.
This logic doesn’t really follow at all.
If the Giants extend Cain, it will add probably $5-8M to their payroll. Meanwhile, they have close to $30M coming off the books after 2012, another $19M or so after 2013, and another $10M after that, not including Cain and Lincecum. Meanwhile, payroll is projected to continue expansion.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Payroll might increase by $5M, as it did this year. And the logic follows because of pay raises to their arb players, as was the case this year.

Great rundown on the HOF balloting. Highlights:
Jack Morris’ uptick from 53.5% in 2011 to 66.7% this year is, on the surface, a good thing for his candidacy. Not many guys who get that many votes fail to make it. So on one level you’d think he’d be a shoe-in for next year. The problem, however, is that so many worthy candidates — and candidates who will got lots of support but who maybe not enough for election — will be coming in next two years.
Jeff Bagwell’s elevation from 41.7% to 56% is quite encouraging, both for him personally and for the idea that people who are unfairly lumped in with PED users may actually get a fair shake eventually.
Speaking of forward, Tim Raines took a nice leap forward as well, going from 37.5% in 2011 to 48.7% this year. Still no lock — you really need to bust 50% before you get real momentum — but encouraging all the same.

Actually, given how many people there are, I wouldn’t be surprised if nobody gets inducted at all due to the voting limits.

Can we talk about next year's HOF ballot now?
Holdovers:
Barry Larkin
Jack Morris
Jeff Bagwell
Lee Smith
Tim Raines
Alan Trammell
Edgar Martinez
Fred McGriff
Larry Walker
Mark McGwire
Don Mattingly
Dale Murphy
Rafael Palmeiro
Bernie Williams
(Possible) First years:
Barry Bonds
Roger Clemens
Mike Piazza
Sammy Sosa
Curt Schilling
Craig Biggio
Jose Mesa
Roberto Hernandez
Kenny Lofton
David Wells
Steve Finley
Mike Stanton
Shawn Green
Bob Wickman
Julio Franco
Sandy Alomar
Jeff Cirillo
Mike Myers
Tony Batista
Royce Clayton
Jeff Conine
Steve Kline
Ryan Klesko
Aaron Sele
Preston Wilson
Woody Williams
Reggie Sanders
Mike Lieberthal
Damian Miller
Antonio Alfonseca
Jaret Wright
Todd Walker
So who do you vote for? Do you employ stratagem to make sure a marginal candidate you like stays on the ballot? Do you vote for Morris just to get him the hell off the ballot? Do you give a special nod to Dale Murphy in his last year of eligibility?
My ballot:
Bonds
Clemens
Piazza
Biggio
Lofton
Trammel
Bagwell
Raines
McGriff
Martinez
For the new ones, there are some I think should go in right away (Bonds, Clemens, Piazza), and some I like enough I want to be sure they stick around a little (Lofton and Biggio). I feel like I could support Sosa and Schilling, but would want to give it more thought, and I figure they would probably stick on the ballot without my help. For the holdovers, I’m split between throwing support behind guys that are close (Bagwell, Raines) and trying to help down ballot guys I like to stick around (Trammel, Martinez, and McGriff).
It feels like the most stacked ballot to come along in a long time, and the one with the biggest baggage. And it’s only going to get bigger. Oof.
I'm as tall as Mel. Why can't I hit 500 home runs?

I liked Jon Bois’s pseudo-defense of opposing the DH.
I’m a firm opponent of the designated hitter rule, because just as I love to watch a punter try to scoop up a bad snap and try to throw it, or see a 7’1" center with no range try to chuck up a last-second three, I love watching pitchers hit.
Never will I come closer to seeing what it would be like if someone with my skill set tried to perform on a professional level. I mean, how nuts is this: in the National League, five to 10 percent of all at-bats are taken by men who, by everyone’s admission, are profoundly bad at it! It’s Dada performance art, and the ubiquity of such comical nonsense — over the course of a game, a season, and the history of baseball — is unrivaled by anything in any other sport.
There is a way that letting pitchers hit is profoundly silly.
Anyway, I try to stay out of the DH conversation. Partly because, well, I’m okay with the DH. There’s something about having two leagues that are functionally different makes the whole idea of leagues… make sense to me. The AFC and the NFL are essentially interchangeable, for instance. The only functional reason for their alignment is to complicate tournament seeding. But the AL and NL are different fucking things! If you put an AL team in the NL, they have to change their shit! I love that.
The other reason I stay out, though, is that there’s no real argument against “Baseball is fielding and hitting, and players should do both.” Yeah. They probably should. I guess.
But just think if baseball had a third league, and in the third league you had unlimited designated hitters and expanded rosters, so that you could theoretically field a team with 9 defensive players and 9 entirely different offensive players, like football! Man, interleague would be so nuts! So many teams would have to change so much of their shit. Man.

I feel bad for teams that don’t have a guy in the hall. One of the reasons I am a Helton and Ichiro booster.
I know people have made an argument that Walker was better than Helton, but I think he might have the counting stats and reputation to get it done.

Dude stocked that farm system
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
I went with Sabes & Co over the Snakes BT, but just barely. It’s not as difficult to look good when you start with a stacked farm system and then you get the #3 and #6 picks in one of the best years of the history of the draft. In general, at the major league level the Giants have outperfromed their farm system and draft positions during the last 5 years, while the Snakes have underperformed in both areas over the last 5 years. Not to mention that the Snakes got incredibly lucky when they were able to find a problem with Barret Loux’s elbow back in the summer of 2010. Without that bit of luck they would have only had Bauer and Loux instead of Bauer and Bradley.
I will add that if Sabes blows the Matt Cain situation in the next 10 weeks then the nod clearly goes to the Snakes BT.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Fla said it much better than I ever could.
Plus, I’ll just throw in the fact that the Giants have a big resource advantage. Diamondbacks won 95 games last year and were still 12th in attendance while their payroll shrunk by $20M, or 22%.
The Giants do not have the depth that the Diamondbacks do, but project better for the long run in terms of resource and general organizational health.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Ok, give you that
But I always think of execuative team too. I don’t know the history of the Dbacks, but I love the baseball mindedness of that franchise, rebuilding itself a couple times. It may not have been Sabean, but the Zito and Rowand deals were made, yet the Dbacks seem to avoid those pitfalls.
I would like to see what Towers does a little more long term. I like what the Giants have drafted last 5 years, it was only after Tim and Posey emerged as superstars has the stench coming from the farm the first 10 years of Sabean really gone away.

But the question, as always when discussing teams like the DBacks, is if you’d put up with several seasons worth of sucking to put together a team that will have a 2-3 year “window of opportunity” before the front office blows it all up again
by Dingoes Ate My Baby on Jan 9, 2012 1:19 PM PST up reply actions
I put that as a product of payroll
More than anything else. DBacks were not going to give Haren 80 mil, so they recycled him for prospects in a down year. The Giants held Cain until they had something going.

The Diamondbacks don’t have the necessary payroll to sign Zito and Rowand deals. Or keep their good players.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
He has a Cain-like contract. Great for the team this year and next, but it jumps to nearly $15M in the last two years, and that is when they will probably move him to make payroll room to keep Kennedy and Hudson (or whoever) while they groom Bauer and co.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
They also need to try and keep Montero. Which makes this offense even more confusing.

just for shits and giggles.
What do we make of the albatross contracts on the Red Sox during Theo’s tenure. Crawford, Lackey, Drew, Matsuzaka… Do we see “ownership” moves on other teams in the same way we see them with Sabean vs. the Legion of Doom?

I am as ready as anybody to say that it is too early to pass judgment on the Crawford deal, so perhaps it is unfair in that respect to include him with the other perceived busts, but it is certainly a “zomg big money franchise player” contract that is perceived as being made to mollify fans.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Well I don't know as much about those situations
With Zito we’ve all read the stories and I have a bit of inside knowledge from a source I’m confident in that I can firmly place the Zito blame on Magowan.
Lets take each of your examples.
Crawford: I think that was all Theo and Crawford was his target along with Gonzalez. Didn’t work out year one. Not ready to call it a bust.
Lackey: Reeks of ownership freaking out because they weren’t signing anyone in that particular offseason
Drew: Not as bad as you think when you break it down by Drew’s WAR with the Sox.
Dice-K: Atrocious. Blame Theo, but lots of reports that Dice-K was stubborn in his workout routines and had poor work ethic. And he had one year that is better than anything Zito has or will ever give us.

Drinkers should have at least two alcohol-free days each week, a committee of British MPs has recommended.
“While we urge the UK health departments to re-evaluate the guidelines more thoroughly, the evidence we received suggests that the guidelines should not be increased and that people should be advised to take at least two drink-free days a week,” he said.
In 1987, the “sensible limits” for drinking were defined as 21 units of alcohol a week for men and 14 for women. By the early 1990s, scientific evidence had emerged suggesting that alcohol consumption might reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, prompting a review of the guidelines.
The government then recommended that drinking guidelines should be couched in daily terms: men should not regularly drink more than three to four units a day and women no more than two to three units a day.

I would agree with most of this. Having read the book, I knew what I was getting myself into in terms of graphic sex and violence, so that didn’t bother me too much.
They did a good job of condensing the book into a palatable story without skipping over too much valuable information, though the Wennerstrom thread as a driving motivation for Blomkvist was a little absent.
The biggest failing was the opening credits, hands down. I know Daniel Craig was in it, but JFC it’s not a Bond Movie. Completely incongruous with the attitude and pacing of the film.
They also telegraphed pretty obviously that it’s going to be a full trilogy of films.

D’Backs are pretty bad, too.
Interesting pole
And there are negatives for each option. The Dodgers are stuck with nowhere to turn right now. The Padres are the Padres. There aren’t really any negatives for the Rockies, it’s just to cold where they are.
Personally, I would consider two options: The Giants or the Diamondbacks. They still both have issues. The Giants have money. The payroll is after all 130 million, but that’s all tied up in three mostly to completely useless players. The Dbacks have a loaded farm system, and would probably be the least work right up front, but have no money (or so it seems) and I would be left without a team once all the contracts are up.
In the end, it comes down to one factor if I had to chose. You guys have this rainy day fund, for a rainy day that I don’t think is ever actually going to come. Sorry. I don’t think I would ever have money to spend even after Zito, Huff, and Rowand? is that right? came off the books. At least with the Dbacks, I go into it knowing that there is no money and never will be or could be.
isitspringtrainingyet.com
The correct answer is none of them
I agree with this…. Maybe Arizona which has had some decent runs, Arizona’s farm system is decent in that they have produced a number of both position players and pitchers. Right now they don’t seem to get stuck with the bad concrats or make a lot of dumb moves.
Sabean has made a number of bad moves in the past few years. I will give him a break for the WS but I think the team got hot at the right moment, he could not even get back to the playoffs the next year. I find most of his moves deplorable, Zito was a much his fault as anyone. Now manybe he was forced into the Zito contract will never know, but so many of his moves have just backfired.
In the past dozen years or so the Giants have had a very respectable payroll, they have just sunk it into players like Zito and Rowland. Traded for Beltran with no attempt to re-sign him, Tried with players like washed up Tejada. IMO the Giants just seem lost, they don’t seem to have a direction at all other then Posey, maybe Belt. I will grant them the starting pitching is generaly tops, but they have no balance, the farm system is not great and we have no stable lineup at all. Well maybe we might have a stable lineup but it sucks….. !!!!!!!!!!
