Sickels' list. He doesn't even rank Neal or Wheeler, which seems odd to me and my selective amnesia.

Sounds pretty good to me
1) Gary Brown, OF, Grade B+: Future center fielder. Outstanding speed, doubles power with occasional home runs, not a big walk guy but makes contact and should continue to hit for a high average. Combined with strong defense, you have an impressive package of tools and skills.

2) Joe Panik, SS-2B, Grade B: I was very impressed with him in the Arizona Fall League. Line drive bat with gap power, good plate discipline, uses speed well on the bases, plays with fire. I think he can be an average defensive shortstop or above-average at second base. Nice tablesetter when combined with Brown at the top of the future Giants order.

This is totally unfounded, but it seems to me that Sickles is generally more willing to change his opinion when new information comes to light. Law tends to stick by his initial assessment come hell or high water.

He was among the legions who were very “yeah, whatever” to Vogelsong’s early successes. When Vogelsong kept throwing strikes though, he retreated to a platform of “yeah, whatever.”

We’ll see how Panik pans out, Law’s utility-guy rap for him bugs me.

by shankbone on Jan 3, 2012 1:03 PM PST up reply actions

Utility guy doesn’t make much sense to me. What I’ve read doesn’t make him out like a versatile defender. He fits the profile of a contact, doubles power 2B very well.

It pretty much comes down to whether he keeps hitting as he moves up the levels. If he does, then he could be a solid regular for a contending team. If not, he could be a regular for a bad team, or he just flames out.

I think “utility guy” is his infield equivalent for a 4th outfielder. Probably somewhat backhanded in Panik’s case, but in two years we’ll have a much better idea.

I might be totally off on this, but I’ve gotten the impression that his ceiling is Freddy Sanchez. Obviously he’d be cool to have, but he’s not going to be some sort of savior.

I think he’ll walk a lot more than Freddy.

by Roger on Jan 3, 2012 1:14 PM PST up reply actions

As I say below, I have to imagine his walk rates will shrink as he goes up the levels, but 2010 and 2011, from whence we know him, has Freddy’s walk rate as around 6%, which is about 50 points worth of OBP.

Could be better than that, maybe more in the ballpark of what we’ve seen out of Jamey Carroll, but I won’t get my hopes up until he’s seen something better than the Cape Cod league and Salem-Kaizer.

by Solidarity on Jan 3, 2012 1:19 PM PST up reply actions

Walk rates normalize pretty quickly above the rookie levels, and many successful major leaguers actually improve their walk rate at the major league level.

As far as comparing with Franchez goes, a few things to consider: Sanchez began pro ball two years older. His walk rates in his minor league career were 7%, 6%, 8%, 12%, 8% (Panik was at 9% in his first year). He never in any minor league season had more walks than Ks (as Panik did last year).

by Roger on Jan 3, 2012 1:40 PM PST up reply actions

Question

do player walk more in the first years? I can see a player being more tentative the first years and taking walks rather than making contact.

Remember, pitching is worse at lower levels.

It’s easier to walk because they’re not seeing as many strikes.

That’s right. It’s sometimes hard to see the signal (good approach to hitting) for the noise (pitchers with awful control) at the lowest levels.

He can play a serviceable SS or 2B. That’s pretty much the definition of a utility IF because if he can play those two slots he can play the other two as well.

by Roger on Jan 3, 2012 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

There’s some question as to whether he can handle SS, which I suspect might push him to 2B in the long run. But without having seen him, I wouldn’t be surprised if he could play it at least as well as Fontenot.

I think I get the same vibe from shankbone that “utility guy” does have a certain pejorative feel to it, though that might be a misinterpretation on our part.

Sickels and BA have both said they think he can stick at SS. They both talk to alot of scouts. The questions seem to be coming from the internet community more than the scouting community.

by Roger on Jan 3, 2012 1:33 PM PST up reply actions

From my observations I see no reason he can’t stick as SS. Not amazing range but defintely has enough arm.

I don’t have the sources but it seems like the most common description of Panik’s defensive future is either a slightly below average but passable SS or an above average 2B. I suppose that could make him useful as a utility IF.

Though personally I think he’ll be better than that. Freddy Sanchez + OBP sounds like a perennial borderline All-star to me.

Bonds, age 21-27 seasons: .275/.380/.503

To be fair, Bonds has the higher OPS+ due to park and league adjustments. But it’s not by a lot. Fielder is very good.

Perhaps..
I saw Gillaspie play eight games last year. SSS I know, but he can hit. Sadly, the rumors of his poor defense are true. He played 3B all eight games that I saw. It’s not that he is a "hands of stone clankmitt ", it is more his footwork, lateral movement and read off the bat. He doesn’t seem comfortable on defense. I’d have to go with free fp here and say that maybe he could play 2B, but from what I saw last year, an awful lot of balls would get through up the middle.

It’s dumb, because he’s pretty much asking to be paid like a 1-WAR player for two years. Teams smell blood in the water, so they’re trying to barter him down for better value. If Cody stays firm, I suspect he’ll get a deal he likes sooner or later.

The more I think about it, the better I feel about the Giants having a shot at the division. Yeah, it sucks that they didn’t get Beltran or a decent shortstop, but this is what I keep thinking about:

-Huff probably won’t be worse than last year, and if he is, Belt will probably get regular playing time at 1st at least halfway through the year. Yeah, Brett Pill, I know, but I think the team really does know Belt is the better player going forward. They’ve intimated as much that if Huff struggles early, he has a short leash.

-I know the running joke is that Sanchez & Posey back = OFFENSE, but it will be true, even if it’s not to the extent the team might believe. The upgrade from those positions last year should be pretty significant.

-Cabrera and Pagan should be at least a little bit of an upgrade from last year’s outfield spots of Burrell, Torres, Ross & Huff.

-The only really significant areas that could regress from last year seem to be Sandoval, Vogelsong, and the general health of the pitching staff. Not saying they will regress, but as far as what went well for the Giants last year, those seem to be the areas that you’d question whether they could sustain.

Considering all that, and assuming the injury bug probably couldn’t be as prevalent as last year, I really do think this team has a good possibility of winning the division.

No

I said lean heavily…

Objectively speaking, the Giants will have a below average to average offense with an excellent pitching staff.

Cardinals will lean heavily on their lineup with Carpenter being 39 and Wainwright coming off injury.

Reds will lean heavily on their lineup with volatile pitching

Phillies will lean on their pitching as their lineup gets older and Howard being out.

D-backs will lean on their lineup but they are probably more balance than most teams.

Tigers leans heavily on their lineup and one stud SP.

Rangers leans heavily on their lineup with uncertainty in their rotation

Yankees leans heavily on their lineup and CC

Red Sox leans heavily on their lineup.

That is your observation of those teams. We know the Giants well enough to know what they think (for the most part), but you are missing out on what those other teams think. You are, in essence, ignoring their plans and looking at what they have and coming to a separate conclusion as to what they will need to lean on in order to be successful, however…

The Cardinals think they have above average pitching. IF the age of their pitching doesn’t get to him, Carpenter is an excellent pitcher. If they get a decent Wainwright, that will cover a big gap in their rotation. Garcia is good. The bullpen was good enough to win a World Series last year. They may have finally found their closer and such.

The Reds are working on their pitching and think that Latos and another good year from Cueto (improving) as well as Leake and possibly Bailey (and a bounce-back from Arroyo) will help them out. And they picked up Marshall and they might be able to get a solid beginning to end out of Chapman, too. They think they’re on the right track with their pitching.

The Phillies will lean on their pitching, of course they will, but they think Rollins and Utley (if/when healthy) are premiere offensive players. They get a whole year of Pence. They’ve still got Shitfacedieinafiretorino and maybe this is the year Brown does something for them.

D-Backs, yes, pretty well balanced.

The Tigers think Verlander, Scherzer and Fister is pretty damned solid and the bullpen might need a tweek or two, but they probably feel pretty good with Valverde closing.

Rangers, yes… uncertainty there. I don’t think Wilson is that big of a loss, but that’s why they went out to get Darvish.

Yankees and Red Sox both need their lineups to win, but they think their pitching is/could be better than it is with the current arms that they have.

Again, “lean heavily” is your analysis and not a description of what the teams listed have planned to do in the 2012 season or even in the past. The Giants plan is to hope. That’s it.

by Every6thDay on Jan 3, 2012 9:43 AM PST up reply actions

But

that’s because you are being objective about the other teams while being very critical about the Giants’ weakness. There are a lot of perhaps, ifs, and maybe’s in your analysis.

I disagree with their assessment. Just because they’re bad at signing FA bats and/or long-term deals doesn’t mean those are bad strategies. And it makes it difficult to build any sort of depth (at any position) if you have to keep making trades mid-season to correct your lack of offense which you could’ve fixed with some better strategy.

by Every6thDay on Jan 3, 2012 9:52 AM PST up reply actions

The midseason trades

were made to try and put the team over the top and get to the playoffs (more of the Beltran than the Cabrera).

I mean the Giants could have said last year, half the team is out with injuries and we’re giving up. Instead, they made a play to try and get in the playoffs.

I am not following you

Obviously the team offense was struggling and that’s why the FO gave up Wheeler to get Beltran.

This off season, Giants get Sanchez and Buster back. They believe they improved offensively in OF positions by getting Pagan and Melky. Some people here disagree but no one really knows until they play the season.

I mean people were angry (I mean angry) over at NN when the Niners lost out on all the major CBs and lost Franklin.

"Put the team over the top"
“We’re at an interesting place in time. We’re trying to get back to the playoffs by winning the division, and much like last year taking our chances,” Sabean said. “It’s timely. Our fans deserve this as well as the team.”

San Francisco lost reigning NL Rookie of the Year catcher Buster Posey for the season when he tore three ligaments in his ankle and fractured a bone in his lower left leg in a home-plate collision with Florida’s Scott Cousins on May 25.

It was a devastating blow.

“Once Buster went down, I thought we were dead in the water to have the chance to replace him,” Sabean said. “Carlos has the chance to do that.”

Well this is encouraging:
Jarrett Parker, OF, Grade C+: Good athlete, shows power, speed, draws walks, fine glove. Main problem is strikeouts: he struggles with contact and batting average/OBP will suffer at higher levels without adjustments in his approach. Fourth outfielder profile right now

OT

Finally saw Moneyball. Maybe a couple spoilers, even though I’m sure most have read the book, nothing too revealing.

I found it to be pretty meh. Pitt’s portrayal of Beane seemed very hollow—it just seemed like normal Brad Pitt trying to act like he was a know-it-all baseball executive. Wasn’t very believable.

Didn’t really seem to follow the book all that much, although had they done that it would have made for an even more plodding experience. The movie seemed to really center around his relationship with his daughter and the winning streak, two things that I don’t remember being much of a part of the book. Also, they didn’t even talk about the draft at all, which IIRC was a large part of the book, especially Jeremy Brown, who was Beane’s white whale and received barely a mention in the movie.

I still don’t get why the movie was necessary, but I guess you could say that about 90% of the movies put out these days.

According to Band of Misfits, Molina was played more than they wanted so they could showcase him. When they finally roped in the Rangers, they made the trade. Which makes some sense— you can’t suddenly announce you’re going to trade a player and then have it happen within a 24 hour period. Especially if the player’s not really that good to begin with.

And if he played crappy enough for Sabean to want to drop him for the roster (I’d love to see how bad that would be, considering that Huff was rated as the least valuable player in the NL last year, and still started games regularly all season long), do you really think any team would give up anything for him?

I’ll admit, I’ve never really understood how Bengie Molina was a clear example of these guys preferring a young guy. And then continued to be the preferred starter by the manager until the general manager literally ripped the option away.

Yeah. I wasn’t commenting on the possibility of Huff being gone. I’ve said a few times that I think he’s suddenly become exactly the kind of player that Sabean is okay with discarding.

I’ve seen the Molina trade mentioned many times, though, as an example of the team doing what it takes to get an exciting young bat in the lineup. And that doesn’t make sense to me.

The Goofus-scenario on the Molina trade is the only plausible rationale that suggests anything other than Molina playing his way out of a job that was going to be damned hard to lose.

They clearly wanted Posey in the minors and they clearly wanted Molina to keep him there for a while. And you know what? Their reasons for wanting Posey in the minors may very well have been wise. I don’t really know, and I’ve made no attempt to pass judgment on those reasons here. But that’s where they wanted him in 2010.

My version simply states that the Molina trade was not motivated by the burning desire to get Posey in the lineup, because they wanted him in the minors. The major league job was Molina’s because they believed his presence on the ML roster (20 HRs, etc.) made it reasonable to keep Posey in the minors.

That plan changed because Molina was awful. The fat tub of goo stuff was just descriptive.

This is what I’m talking about. I could just as easily say that the job was Molina’s because the team felt it was necessary to give Buster 2-3 months working with and being evaluated by Steve Decker before throwing him to the wolves. Also, Molina didn’t really start sucking hard until after Buster was called up.
The thing is, even with those extra months in the minors Buster had a meteoric rise from A-ball to the bigs. Getting all worked up about how Molina was blocking him seems odd to me.

But I dunno. They beat the Angels by 10 games but lost their best pitcher to the Angels (-3ish WAR from TEX and +3 to ANA) and had the Angels sign one of the best players in baseball to play a position that they were weak at last season?

There are two brands of 2Bs these days.

The gnattish defenders, like Eckstein, Altuve, Sanchez, and Carroll.

And then the Utleys Canos, and Ugglas of the world. It’s pretty hard to get a hold of one of those, though. A lesser example would be Kelly Johnson, which is kind of what I was hoping for out of Culberson after the 2010 AFL. Not so.

He’s definitely an above average pitcher but I wouldn’t categorize him with the players you mentioned. Although it looks like he’s getting good results, there’s no WOW factor.

Wheeler is also B+
although Sickels said he would rank him above Brown "without question".

I somehow feel better about him being a B+, though it sucks that he would still be the Giants’ best prospect.

I would also think that it’s a lot harder to project a Single-A pitcher than a single-A batter.

Question

Has there been examples of a pitcher who “found his control”? J. Sanchez had very similar stats as Wheeler early in his minor league career (Sanchez had a lower BB rate).

There was an analysis of Wheeler’s numbers in which it was stated that pitchers with his walkrate and K/BB ratio almost never made it. The only exception was Ubaldo and his control problems have gotten worse

Lots of pitchers improve their control over time. Randy Johnson is the prime example. He walked 5.2 per 9 in his 20s, 2.8 per 9 in his 30s, and 2.1 per 9 in his 40s.

But at least this suggests an actual ability that players are actually able to tap. It may not be especially useful, but it seems meaningful.

Curt Schilling was kind of nuts, though. After turning 30, he shaved a full walk per 9 off his BB rate while ADDING almost two strikeouts to the same per.

Hindsight dictates they should’ve traded him after 2010, but even with near-term hindsight and at the time, they probably moved Sanchez too fast this off-season and might’ve been able to get something better than Melky. Then again, as speckops says, it is far more likely a pitcher never figures it out.

I think they should have, but not because we should expect anything special out of his walk rate. I just think his value would have rebounded enough to make him interesting to more teams at a time when they might be more desperate for pitching.

Technically true. The Eagles went 8-8 this year.

Of course, they had to win their last four games (against the spectacular quartet of MIA, NYJ, DAL, and WAS) to get there, so that’s hardly a mark in his favor. In fact, the “Dream Team” he was handed only had to play five games against playoff-bound teams, and managed to go all of 1-4 against them. Mix in the well-documented issues with the two-minute drill and the fanbase howling for his head, and I am comfortable with my flabbergastation.

But you are correct that his overall record should earn him a mulligan or two.

Anyway, it sounds like Lurie has named 2012 Reid’s put up or shut up season.

There’s a point in The Princess Bride where Vizzini says the word “inconceivable” too many times for Inigo’s taste, and Inigo looks at him sideways and says, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

I bring this up because Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie used the word “unacceptable” several times in today’s news conference, and that’s one of those words that sports people use without thinking about what it really means. If something is “unacceptable” (as Lurie insists the Eagles’ 8-8 season was) yet elicits no consequences, then that makes it, by definition, “acceptable.” Lurie spent the first 15 minutes of his address to the Philadelphia media talking about his anger and frustration, called the first half of the season “dismal” and “terrible” and said he took little solace in the Eagles’ 4-0 finish because it came against teams that weren’t “that competitive.”

I find this whole post extremely depressing

The lack of minor league depth is sad. At least we are filling in the holes with big time free agents…wait. At least we are resigning our All-star pitchers…wait. At least we are rebuilding for future success…wait.

OK, I give up. Why exactly am I suppose to be excited about the Giants in 2112 and beyond? Buster Posey at 1B for years to come will be the answer I guess.

I might start drinking.

It kinda is

I suppose if Brown, Panik and Belt all pan out well while Panda and Buster don’t decline than I would put it in the “not horrible” category. However, you missed my sarcasm point of not having resigned any all star pictures yet. So you saying Lincecum and Cain are on this team I find horrible is a straw man. If the Giants do indeed have Lincecum and Cain on the same team the same year Brown and Panik are on the team and are good, then it is not a horrible team. That’s a lot of ifs and it’s exactly my point of not being too excited about the years to come.

by Daver321 on Jan 3, 2012 1:15 PM PST up reply actions

Sandoval and Buster are, like, 25 next season.

In two years, when Brown and Panik are more likely to be at the major league level, Panda and Posey should be getting close to their primes, not declining. Belt will also be a bit more grown into his frame.

It really doesn’t take that much for granted.

Brown is probably a top 40 prospect; Panik may sneak into the top 50, but maybe not. For what it’s worth, Sickels recently looked back at the top 50 hitting prospects from 2007 here. A couple of guys turned out really well after #30, but mostly a lot of meh. Projecting prospects, even hitters, is really hard.

Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.

by speckops on Jan 3, 2012 1:44 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, but neither is the grading reason for “Maybe I should start drinking.” It’s a crop that has enough potential that the odds are in the Giants’ favor that at least a few should pan out to be useful pieces.

The reason the Giants have a lot of ‘ifs’ is because we already have 4 ‘sure things,’ or the closest you can get to it, in the majors. Plus Sandoval, plus Belt.

It’s like people act like we’re the Pirates because they think they don’t have enough misery in their own lives.

I don’t think Panik will sneak into the Top 100, sadly. I think Brown will be our only top 100 guy this year. Which, along with the rest of your statement (which is quite true) doesn’t reflect all that well on our near term future.

by Roger on Jan 3, 2012 2:36 PM PST up reply actions

It’s going to stay reliant on graduated talent for another couple years at least. The good news is, payroll flexibility should improve in coming years, so FA might be a feasible stopgap. Also, I can’t imagine that the Giants are going to hang on to Posey, Sanchez, Joseph, and Susac. Depending on who they like, one or more of them could be traded for better pieces if they move at the right time.

Without meaning to be overly negative, to me if Cain and Lincecum both walk, I don’t see how we’re not immediately one of the bottom half dozen teams in MLB for several years.

by Roger on Jan 3, 2012 2:59 PM PST up reply actions

Hopefully, if they are going to walk, a decent haul of prospects will be coming the other way.

by BestHyperboleEver on Jan 3, 2012 3:02 PM PST up reply actions

Honestly, that almost never happens. If you put the three Cliff Lee trades together AND throw in the Roy Halladay deal you won’t end up with much of significance, certainly nothing that would radically improve the team in the mid-term. And that’s 14 prospects, only maybe two of whom (maybe three if you want to be optimistic) at this point hold out much hope for being really good major leaguers.

I know everyone thinks longingly about the Bartolo Colon deal but that was such a sui generis situation that it’s not really worth dreaming on.

Well if the Mariners had just traded for Jesus Montero, then that trade would look a lot better right now. And hey… Montero is still available! ;)

In the (to my mind unlikely) event that neither Cain nor Lincecum wanted to sign with us at all, that at least leaves us with a rather huge hole in our budget with which to pay free agents (especially as Rowand, Huff and Zito will all be off the books by then too). Plus whatever propects we get for them. It’s not like if they leave we have to go on pitching forever with Bumgarner, Vogelsong, Surkamp and Barry Zito’s zombified corpse.

by DiggingForFire on Jan 4, 2012 5:58 AM PST up reply actions

So once we finally get Rowand and Huff and Zito’s contracts off the books we’ll have the money to go out and build our team through FA? You’ll forgive me if that thought doesn’t fill me with comfort.

by Roger on Jan 4, 2012 6:11 AM PST up reply actions

Well, not just Rowand, Zito and Huff’s contracts. It would also be Lincecum’s and Cain’s current contracts, as they haven’t signed extensions in this scenario.

Added up, that’s what, close to $60m per year free that is currently tied up in payroll. That’s a lot of dough to replace Lincecum and Cain and get filler to cover for the non-production we’re currently getting from Zito, Rowand and Huff. Plus the prospects.

Don’t get me wrong, I desperately don’t want Lincecum or Cain to leave. But I don’t agree at all that we would suddenly be terrible if they did.

by DiggingForFire on Jan 4, 2012 6:25 AM PST up reply actions

I think you missed my point.

by Roger on Jan 4, 2012 6:27 AM PST up reply actions

That’s entirely possible.

by DiggingForFire on Jan 4, 2012 6:34 AM PST up reply actions

My point was that you’re relying on the team that made the Zito, Rowand, and Huff decisions to construct a competitive team off the FA market when their history of FA signings is not a particularly positive ones. We know that Sabean believes in getting a lot of “solid” guys as opposed to pursuing superstars, and he tends to overpay for veterans. While he’s found some bargain gems over the years, the worst Giants teams in our recent history were almost entirely put together from the FA market.

by Roger on Jan 4, 2012 6:41 AM PST up reply actions

Ah, I thought that might have been it. I think it’s fair point. I definitely don’t love the idea of them trying to replace Cain and Lincecum in the FA market in consequtive years, even with a great big pot of money to do it with (which is why I want to keep at least one of them).

On the other hand, hopefully the Giants will have learned a lot from those contracts

by DiggingForFire on Jan 4, 2012 6:47 AM PST up reply actions

Personally, I would be quite happy if they re-signed both. I’d be half as happy if they just signed Lincecum and slightly less so if they just signed Cain.

But if I were either Cain or Lincecum’s agents I would certainly be pushing them to explore the market. Sadly.

I am not nearly so pessimistic about it. That we have no premium talent is hardly news. But it seems to me that we have some good talent in the system, much of it is just not close to the majors.

We’re at a juncture where we don’t have many good trade chips, but in two years this crop may look much better; some of the chaff will drop off of course, but we’ll have more talent coming in underneath them.

But, of course, the pitching won’t be the same, since the Giants can’t afford Lincecum, Cain and Bumgarner.

by boonitez on Jan 3, 2012 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

Bear in mind

Belt and Crawford aren’t on the list because they’re already in the majors, even though in reality they are still really in the ‘prospect’ stage of their careers. Add them in and and the list looks a little better.

It would also look a fair bit nicer with Wheeler, of course. But I take comfort from the idea that he was considered expendable because the Giants are so committed to signing up Lincecum, Cain and Bumgarner, and so confident that Vogelsong is the real deal, that we are pretty stocked for pitching talent for the next several years. And/or they see something in Wheeler that suggests he may not be as good as most people think.
