Lincecum’s agent, Rick Thurman of the Beverly Hills Sports Council, emailed this statement to me: "Although we were not able to work out a longer-term deal, we found common ground in a two-year deal," Thurman stated. "This doesn’t preclude continued negotiations for Tim to remain a Giant for the rest of his career."

I could not tell you
The not so exciting answer is
They exceeded expectations and cannot be expected to maintain this pace, especially with ongoing Foxconn stuff.

Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
I call him gerald. he’s a pristine white handkerchief, though? nediB eoJ Joe Biden ‽ Joe Biden.
I've been listening for over a decade.
They’re a pretty remarkably consistent band for the amount of horrible things Isaac Brock does to himself. I actually only like about half of good news for people who love bad news, but the rest of the catalogue is decent to amazing. The Moon and Antarctica is in my all time top 5 if you go by the one album per artist rule.
i still like the first two albums
and parts of M&A, I just don’t listen to them.
But the last two are just way too… smooth, idk.

I call him gerald. he’s a pristine white handkerchief, though? nediB eoJ Joe Biden ‽ Joe Biden.
We Were Dead too smooth? I acknowledge Missed the Boat and Dashboard
The theory/joke around the house is that Good News was the album that paid for the drugs, and We Were Dead is what came of it.
parting of the sensory and spitting venom are good
rest i liked for awhile, but it just grew off of me.
can’t believe it’s been 5 years since WWD came out though.

I call him gerald. he’s a pristine white handkerchief, though? nediB eoJ Joe Biden ‽ Joe Biden.
Yeah, it's kinda weird, innit?
Most of those kinda bands were while I was dating someone, but that’s okay. Still like the Decemberists through The Hazards of Love (which I LOVE but everyone else hates) and Modest Mouse and an album or two by others here and there
You're not the only one
I think Hazards of Love is pretty awesome overall. A couple forgettable tracks, but mostly very solid and really unique.

Hey, so it goes. I went through a period of liking many bands temporarily.
I’ve cut out whole subgenres from listening experience. Mostly because I’m not in brutal death metal bands anymore, but I also kinda gave up on Ska once I stopped dating this one chick a few years back.
We just like what we like. In tribute of that, album of the night is my number one album ever. Ocean Machine

It all had to do with the balance of power between European countries.
Sort of a pre-nuclear arms race enabled by the Industrial Revolution. And Russia lusting for a warm-water port. So an Austrian Archduke gets bumped off in Serbia, and every country gets pulled in by treaties and allegiances.

Yeah, I think so.
As the 20th Century fades into the rear-view mirror, those two conflicts are going to be studied more as a single unit, a la the Hundred Years and Thirty Years Wars. If the Treaty of Versailles doesn’t incorrectly dump all the blame and cost onto Germany, Germany doesn’t go off the deep end in the subsequent decades.
Hitler’s military motivations for revenge on those who humiliated Germany in 1918 could not have been more clearly summed up than by his forcing the French to sign their surrender in the same train car as the one used to end WWI.

Do we really teach that much about slavery, getting into the details of it and how horrible it was? Maybe it’s because I’m oldish but it was referred to and discussed but never in detail and never to the point where you realized what a horror it was. Considering how the Civil War is still being refought in certain ways, it’s probably important for everyone to know just what exactly the Civil War was about

Every teacher in the United States faces the dilemma of teaching depth or breadth.
Depending greatly on where you grew up, what teachers you had, and WHEN you grew up affects the student GREATLY. The political pendulum is constantly swinging on how much freedom a teacher has to teach whatever s/he deems relevant within a given subject. Currently, your average U.S. teacher is getting more pressure to teach every single point on the mandatory standardized tests, but I would anticipate that in the next 5-10 years public thought will begin to move back toward letting teachers incorporate more thematic work rather than “drill and kill” rote memorization to meet state/federal standards.

Thus, from February 3 to March 3, 1945, much of the city was destroyed during the Battle of Manila and 100 000 civilians were killed during the Manila Massacre. Well, it wasn’t the only factor, but it sure did a lot.
Hell, it's why we were so reluctant to enter the first one.

Before studying the war of 1870, we studied the nation building phases of all the major european nations so it all made a lot of sense when we ended up getting to the war.

To elaborate
In the Holy Roman Empire, there were only two kingdoms: Germany and Italy. By the end of the Thirty Years’ War, both of those titles were securely in the hands of the Emperor, making them useless, since the Emperor obviously referred to himself as Emperor and not as King of Germany or Italy. As a result, all the rulers within the Empire had to either content themselves with lesser titles or use titles from some realm outside the Empire, where the rules were less strict. That was why the House of Hohenzollern lived in Brandenburg but didn’t use its title; King of Prussia sounded a lot better than Elector of Brandenburg, even if Prussia itself was a remote territory on the Baltic Sea. Likewise, because Sardinia was outside the bounds of the Empire, it was a kingdom, and so the Piedmontese rulers used their title of King of Sardinia, even though they didn’t live there.

Ah.
Something that never made sense to me was the huge bribes that people would pay to become Electors. Wouldn’t their expected value be negative unless they expected to outlive at least one or even two emperors? How else do you recoup your investment without someone who wants to be emperor to bribe you?
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
An electorate wasn’t just a lifetime thing, though. It was passed on to descendants. A lot of it was a prestige thing, too; the family of an elector could marry much better than the family of a count.

Oh. Then how the hell do you bribe? You bribe the heir or something?
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
If you weren’t already an elector, you would have to either inherit an electorate (difficult when you’re not the heir of an elector) or get one granted by the Emperor (this only happened twice before Napoleon). There were a variety of ways to achieve the former, of course.

John Buchan! Churchill! Sgt. York! The Hobbit! TE Lawrence died in a motorcycle accident!
Let me know when we get to WWII. I just read an interesting theory that Patton’s death was more, er, planned than it was accidental.
I'm as tall as Mel. Why can't I hit 500 home runs?
I’m going off what I remember and it was in the middle of a bunch of other interesting stuff, so my details may not be perfect. But best as I recall his, er, enthusiasm for pushing on to Berlin was not well received by the higher ups. The plan was already in place for Russia to get it’s slice of Germany, so they’d been siphoning off Patton’s supplies and sending them elsewhere so we wouldn’t reach Berlin first. After the war, Patton supposedly found out and threatened to make a public stink.
The author that said all this(Graeme Donald) then quotes an officer named Bazata who claimed to be the guy that offered Patton. Bazata was instructed by a guy in the OSS to take care of Patton, and had an accident planned just up the road from where Patton actually ran into somebody else. They had to finish the job in the hospital with a lethal injection after the accident didn’t kill him.
I’m not entirely convinced. It’s pretty much just one guy (Bazata) saying all this, and what I’ve read of that author (Donald) has skewed to the conspiracy side of research. Nothing insane, but a fair bit of unsubstantiated rumor is used to reach his conclusions. So take it for what you will.
I'm as tall as Mel. Why can't I hit 500 home runs?

For me it became a potentiality issue.
What is set up in the first two or three seasons is awesome, but leaves so much to the imagination that most viewers envisioned something cooler than some of what is actually revealed later.
Throw in the increasing sense that they’re just pulling plot lines from nether regions, and it can get a bit frustrating. Watching it all in one run ruins its greatest strength: all those BAM! moments at the end of episodes that had people talking for at LEAST a week afterwards about what may or may not be going on. If you just hit “next” on the remote and find out, there’s no time for the red herrings to percolate.
Better to be a Giants fan than an Athletic supporter!
that’s a good way of putting it. For me, the most fun was right after an episode aired when everybody ran to the internet to discuss what happened, debate possible clues and come up with theories (which were never right). The ending, however, wasn’t really built for those people (who were probably the show’s most fanatical fans) but for those who watched it but didn’t spend hours reading Doc Jensen or on the AV Club afterwards.

You’re in a good position. You can get a taste for it through your friends and make a more informed decision later.
That said, in addition to all the social events, fraternities are one of the few opportunities I know of where (if you choose to) you can gain experience in managing a large budget (often up to 500K per year), planning complex events, marketing and become surprisingly educated on legal issues and risk management.
But if all you’re looking for is parties I probably wouldn’t bother with it.

Oh shoot. I'm sorry I glanced over that.
For some reason I thought it was a less specific reason to join a frat, you’re right about that.
I was lucky to learn all of that stuff by running productions and working on the annual award show for my department.
he is not saying
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
I think also i gained a ton of experience with philanthropy, setting up events with other fraternities/sororities. Cash management is another way to get some experience to put on your resume. But i found it pretty interesting, the whole election process was an absolute joke though in our fraternity unfortunately.
Overall, you’re right, if all you’re doing is looking for parties and stuff like that, not worth it

We had a long conversation about this a month ago
I tend to agree, it’s just slightly out of affordability for me right now
I have it and love it.
It’s only $99 for the unit. After that the cost vs. cable really depends on how many shows you watch/subscribe to, whether or not they’re available on Apple TV, and how much of your TV watching is appointment viewing vs. just turning it on and watching whatever is on.
What I generally like it for is Netflix (yes, I still have it), OnDemand movies (generally about $1 cheaper than cable OnDemand), and streaming all my music (via iCloud) though my surround sound.

I don’t know if it’s really fair to count the prequels
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
I liked Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson and nothing else. The prequels should have just been them having awesome Jedi adventures that did not at all involve Jar Jar Binks.
by WhatsAMataHari on Jan 24, 2012 11:31 PM PST up reply actions
The prequels were only good for the villains and even then they f**ked that up.
There should have been a Darth Maul lightsaber duel in all 3 of the movies. Jango Fett was the only person who survived a throw-down with Obi-Wan and then doesn’t make it into the last 20 minutes of film. By the time you get to Grievous, you just know it’s not worth getting attached to him.

True. Consistent villain Lieutenants (ala Darth Vader) would have made better films. The books / Clone Wars animation are better about this.

Star Wars itself is one great movie (Empire), one movie that’s great but also kind of crappy (New Whatever), and a good half a movie (Jedi). Then there’s the prequels. And the constant commercialization. And the realization that none of it is really clever or anything more advanced than something I could come up with when I was 8.
I love Star Wars memes, though, and I’ll watch Empire any time I see it, but still, I’ve long been over it

by WhatsAMataHari on Jan 24, 2012 11:41 PM PST up reply actions
this case is fascinating
I don’t see how you’re going to be insightful, though. Paintings were stolen, court gave them back to the successor to the original owner, case closed. The cold war angle is nifty, and the details of the theft are interesting.
How the asshole Princeton grad who stole them got them back to the US is an open question.
He bought them from an ex-Serviceman. The paintings mysteriously disappeared after the US pulled out of East Germany.
by WhatsAMataHari on Jan 24, 2012 11:46 PM PST up reply actions
The point I think we are supposed to take from the case is NY’s special stolen art statute of limitations. An innocent purchaser of stolen goods becomes a wrongdoer only after refusing the rightful owner’s demand for their return.
And the statute of limitations only starts to run once they make the demand and are refused. Otherwise they couldn’t get the art back because the statute of limitations would have already run out.
by WhatsAMataHari on Jan 24, 2012 11:52 PM PST up reply actions
Probably the heart of this guy’s case, if he ever had one. There’s a bunch of other neat stuff in that judgment: German law, usucaption and its antecedents in Roman law and transference of title.
What reading this makes me want to know is, who was this Elicofon clown? $450 in 1946 was a lot of money, and he paid it. Then he comes forward in 1966 when he finds out they are Dürers, but fights like hell to keep them, clearly flogging some lawyer within an inch of his life to hold on to stolen artwork.
Must have been quite a character.
Apparently he primarily collected oriental art and had roughly 2,000 pieces of art in his house, which he “regularly used for numerous charity functions and other large gatherings”
Sounds like he might have be receiving a lot of artwork that he shouldn’t have been able to import legally. Probably got away with it usually because he apparently had money and the owners weren’t usually Grand Duchesses
by WhatsAMataHari on Jan 25, 2012 12:08 AM PST up reply actions
You mean, countries. The Kunstsammlung was East Germany. The Hereditary Grand Duchess tried to horn in on the action at one point, but was dismissed early on, with cause. There is a long history of heirs asserting ownership like this. It’s pretty much always hooey.

from a nerdy book blogger I like (in a post about AFFC, btw)

Only spots for the Newscast Unit. This is a feature.

What’s the difference?
/is ignorant
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
The NPR Newscast Unit produces the top-of-the-hour newscasts heard every hour, every day. The newscast is five minutes long, and composed of short versions of the hour’s top stories. If you’ve heard the newscasts, you know what I mean. Those short pieces (typically no more than 40 seconds) are called spots.
Now think about the structure of the newsmagazines themselves. The newscast signs out at 06:00 past the hour, and you get into the actual program (be it Morning Edition, ATC or something else). The hose will introduce a long piece about a given subject. Those are called features or pieces, and they can run from 3:30 in length, up to 8:00, depending on the subject.
I’ve filed more than a dozen spots for the Newscast Unit, but never a feature for one of the newsmags. If this one goes through, it will be my first, and it will air as a piece in one of the national programs, which is nice.

Most of what we think of as “cleansing” the body probably isn’t all that healthy. The body likes to cleanse itself. Give it good food and drink and, barring disorder, it generally works it out on its own.
Once more, coming to you by proxy.

I think there’s some kind of psychological penance going on with this kind of austerity diet stuff. Like if you can deny yourself long enough, you can make up for your sins of eating Twinkees. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t work that way.
2012 is going to be awesome!
And that’s my biggest source of confusion on the subject. If all food “poisons” your body, you’re screwed because you’re eventually going to eat again. If not all food poisons the body, why don’t you just eat that food? How does spicy, acidic, sugar water and starvation help your body do anything other than be mad at you?

Well, what the hell -- Today's Weather
Practically the entire nation is enjoying above-average temperatures for late January. In parts of the South, highs today will run 20 degrees warmer than normal, and even in the usually-frozen Rockies, highs will be in the 40s and 50s today.
The Storm Prediction Center has outlooked eastern Texas and western Louisiana for the possibility of severe thunderstorms today. Warm, moist air ahead of a warm front will destabilize the atmosphere over that portion of the country, opening the door to thunderstorm development. The activity is expected to begin in Texas late this morning and track eastward into Louisiana this afternoon.
Rain is forecast for a sizable area of the southern Plains today. Areas of rain stretch from St. Louis to the Gulf Coast. Flood watches and warnings are already up for portions of Oklahoma and Texas, where one to three inches of rain is predicted. That rain mass will move east today, bringing showers to the Deep South tonight.
Another low is forecast to move onshore in the Pacific Northwest today, but it won’t pack the same wallop previous systems did. Heavy snow (up to 24 inches) will be restricted to the higher elevations of the Cascade Range. The system will whip up some high seas off the northwest coast — 25 feet in many areas. Heavy rain from that storm will reach down the coast to northern counties of California.
Strong winds will blow across eastern Montana; sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph are likely, with gusts as high as 60 mph.
Our pick city today is Orlando, Florida, Zack Greinke’s hometown. Mostly sunny with a high of 79.

Then you should speak to the manager.
Not tipping is pretty much never ok. If you have a problem with your server, tell their supervisor. Lots of places run tip pools, so not tipping is screwing other people. And if you don’t tip and don’t explain why you’re unhappy, you just look like a douche who doesn’t tip, not like a customer whose experience could be improved.

If money is the reward for good service, and you pay despite having received bad service, how can the system work? I suppose you can pay and the restaurant can lose your business. But it just seems like the system is no longer purely performance based at that point.
It is not purely performance based.
Because the base salary is LOL low. If you really hated your server, drop the tip to 10% and speak to the manager. But don’t just not tip and bounce.

How do people feel about tipping when you pick up food for carry out?
I generally tip about 10% because I know the non-wait staff depend on their tip-outs and it does not matter to them whether I eat the food at home or at the restaurant. But then again, I do not generally tip at McDonalds (the last time I ate there which was about 1997).
I usually do something similar. I always feel awkward because at this point it’s no different than ordering food a bunch of places where it is perfectly acceptable not to tip.

It really depends what your area of specialization is. Some the average is around 200k. It also depends where you live / work.

I don’t see why she has to go to school to be a paralegal though, assuming she already has a bachelor’s
Andre Ethier: Gross-o-Matic 5000
-Adopted Giant: Dan Runzler
When I was looking for a job most of the paralegal listings said either the certificate or a bachelor’s.
The first six innings are overrated.
If you only have a bachelor’s they can’t give you the title until you have some work experience. Unless they changed the law again.
2012 is going to be awesome!
nah, that's the case
You can get a certificate or whatever but that’s just to toot your own horn, show off, whatever. I don’t think it much matters, though it probably doesn’t hurt.

I wouldn’t waste the money, though. Just call yourself a ‘Legal Assistant’ until you can officially go Paralegal.

At my firm, they’re called Legal Assistants, regardless if you have a certificate or not, or how much experience you have.

I’m trying to figure out how to do that very thing. I’m thinking I may bring it up and ask what path I need to take to get there rather than just ask for the title. Only thing is I’m worried that it leaves open the possibility of them laying out many hoops to jump through.

With her looks, she will be able to catch a good one as a paralegal and not have to worry about serving coffee for the rest of her life.
Serving coffee will only get her ogled by married men and men who wants something on the side. She needs a legitimate job to marry someone with prospects.

The problem with being a paralegal
is that you have to work crazy hours and the lawyers make all the money. Well, actually, the partners make all the money and the rest of the lawyers take their resentment out on the help. (I’M EXAGGERATING FOR EFFECT, I KNOW A LOT OF GREAT LAWYERS. But the hours thing is true.)
2012 is going to be awesome!
It's true
The partners delegate to the associates, and the associates delegate to the legal assistants. Just last season, a bunch of us had tickets to a Giants game that we planned for weeks in advance, and at the last second, a legal assistant had to cancel because he was asked to do some project, that really didn’t even have to be done that day.

No, I’m saying if there is 100 to be spent on payroll, I’d like to see the top guy stay put at 20 for awhile so the bottom guys can earn more when the payroll goes up to 105. Still the same money coming out of the owners pockets, just distributing it more evenly. Communist stuff and all that.

Yes. And Andres. Guys like Buster who got a big signing bonus I don’t have a problem with it, but I always feel bad for the guys who didn’t get a signing bonus and then spent several years in the minors, probably accruing all kinds of debt, so they could make league minimum for a year or 2 and then be released.

Yesterday was the 8th anniversary of the Opportunity Rover landing on Mars
It is currently parked for the Martian winter with it’s solar panels pointed at the Sun to keep it warm. The rover is currently very dusty which reduces the efficiency of its solar panels. JPL is hoping for some wind to clean it off.

I've actually seen this question asked before
The answer is that it would add to an already paper thin energy budget. The rovers were designed for a 90 day mission. The fact that it is still there and running after 8 years was never expected so they never anticipated dust to become an issue.

Mars has an atmosphere so it isn't impossible
Of course, you would have to spend energy condensing it until you had enough pressure to use it to blow dust off.
An easier solution would probably be a wiper. But again, there is energy cost with the actuators and they probably wanted to use all available energy for science related stuff during what they thought would be a 90 day mission.
