But while you're right to be scared about things like this tweet ...
Lincecum and #SFGiants still far apart on long deal, like 2-3 yrs and maybe $80M-plus. good to avoid arb tho
... it's not necessarily a bad thing that the Giants and Lincecum didn't agree on a long-term deal. From a cold analytical perspective, a two-year deal for a pitcher -- no matter how good -- is always, always, always preferable than a six- or seven-year deal, save an ability to look into the future, which I'm told you can do if you snort some of the pineapple chunks from a Cha Cha Bowl. No, seriously, try it.
Worst-case scenario: Lincecum is on the Giants for two more years. Oh, there are ways to flesh out the details of that worst-case scenario. There's no point in speaking them aloud, such as a division rival getting new owners who will be looking to spend money to make a big ol' statement, but in that worst-case scenario, the Giants have two more years of Tim Lincecum.
The upside to waiting, though, is that the Giants get to watch Lincecum for two more years before deciding what to pay him. A rebound to his '08/'09 form? A year of August 2010s? Something like last year? All of those pitchers get vastly different deals. And based on that Heyman tweet up there, it looks like the Giants offered a 5/$100M deal, or something similar, and Lincecum's camp countered with something like 8/$180M, which would be a bananers deal. Even if that tweet is off by 33%, it would still be a crazy, risky contract.
If Lincecum is someone capable of staying healthy and otherworldly -- and I have no real reason to doubt that he can -- then the Giants will have quite the scrum of rich teams jostling for position after 2013. The good news is that Lincecum's not going to cut them any deals either. If the Giants really want to pay Tim Lincecum hundreds of millions of dollars for over a half-decade, they'll still have their chance.
Pretend that Lincecum was already a super-free-agent. He's on the market already, courting, dining, and negotiating. There are rumors. There are rumors of the rumors. There is that guy that knows a guy who didn't want to tweet this but here goes. The Yankees are in. The rumor du jour is six years, $155 million. Can the Giants top it? Will they? Someone with knowledge of the organization's thinking about a source close to Lincecum says that the Giants are willing to come over the top. Seven years, $180 million. Chaos. Looting. Horrible Barry Zito jokes.
Then after all of that, the announcement is made: Tim Lincecum signs. Two years, $40.5 million. Imagine how giddy you'd be. Imagine how reasonable that would seem, what little risk there would be. It would seem like a coup.
That's where the Giants are right now. Not a bad place to be, all told. The merits and pitfalls of a super-deal to Tim Lincecum can be explored later. Right now the Giants can busy themselves by destroying those Lincecum-has-halitosis dittos they were running off for the arbitration hearing.
Lincecum's around for two years, at least. It's cool if you think of it like that.

They were like, “Hey, so, ex was asking us if it’d be okay to room together next year.” I was moving out of the city and, naively, assumed that everyone should be cool by now, bygones would be bygones and so on. As such, I gave them my blessing and went on my merry way.
Little did I know. She immediately began sewing the seeds of discord, wound up in a relationship with one of them, and essentially vaporized four or five different friendships. And, of course, did the same thing to the friend she dated what she did to me (shock). What a mess.

We've all had a similar experience I'm sure.
My one friend had his ex stalk him (as in she would show up several minutes after he’d left a given place, hide in the bushes outside his house, etc), hand deliver a box of steak knives to his doorstep, each knife adorned with a red ribbon, and finally accuse him of rape. That’s the gold standard as far as I’m concerned.

If his performance stays the same or even improves, he is going to make way more money than the Giants should pay him. If his performance declines, he is going to want way more money than his performance warrants.

The only scenario I see changing that is he stays about where he is now and the Giants win the WS while he’s still here. I could see how that might tip the scales just right for him to want to stay for a reasonable dollar amount and the team wanting to keep him.

I probably haven’t been to a River Cats game since 2006, which was the first year Barton was on the team. I probably went to 40 or so River Cats games between 2001-2006, and a quick search of BB-Ref indicates that the 1B for most of those games was either Dan Johnson or Graham Koontz, which is a name I was certain I was never going to think about again. Man, brings back memories.

Appears according to FanGraphs he is losing 6 career WAR in baserunning and fielding. It’s amazing what fielding does to WAR, he is about 1 WAR over Maybin last year, or Chris Young. Different position, but vastly different hitting numbers too.

Anyway, I’m psyched about the Lincecum contract for all the reasons outlined above. In celebrating the short-term contract, I was about to write something along the lines of “hard-throwing ace pitchers of slight build can’t be counted on for more than 6 or 7 good seasons.” Then I checked and saw that Pedro turned in 13 quality years, and even Ron Guidry was good for 9, despite basically starting his career at 26 after throwing a zillion innings in the minors. So let’s assume Timmy falls somewhere between the two and has 11 years in him—fine, we’ll give him the monster contract next time around, when Zito’s contract is finally a memory.

Between 1980 and 1986 (1979-5th full year in the league and 28), Guidry had an average rWAR of 3.2
Between 1999 and 2005 (1998-5th full year and 26), Pedro had at average rWAR of 6.6.
There is a big different between the two. Pedro also dropped off the cliff performance wise after 33. Timmy will be 29.5 by the time the contract ends.

Probably zero surplus value at any point in the contract, but it’s possible that he is only slightly overpaid by the end of it, too. Again, assuming salaries keep rising at these substantial rates.

Prince Fielder was 23 years old in 2007. It’s far more likely his wild inconsistency was the result of youth and not some Aubrey Huff-esque DNA.

I know that when I first started following the $-per-marginal-WAR discussion, it was generally agreed to be $4mil per additional win, but now its more like $5mil. So its been close to $500K in inflation per year.

They don’t really go up every year, do they? This year’s spate of deals aren’t much of an advance on the ones ARod and Manny Ramirez signed ten years ago.
Crawford & Werth deals are a couple of examples of above average players
getting paid like elite-level performers.
I mean, you’re not wrong, but if the minimum salary is going to be half a million dollars starting in 2012, it doesn’t seem outlandish to say that baseball salaries are rising.
So maybe the elite players are holding steady but the second tier are getting more? Could be. Trying to think of some Crawford/Werth types from ten years ago…

And it seems like those mid-level contracts were a lot more restrictive, but that was a big FA year. That was the Neagle/Hampton year, A-Rod & Manny, Ellis Burks got 3 years $20MM to DH for Cleveland, Lofton got $8MM, Charles Johnson got 5/35…
maybe, maybe not. I guess we’d have to look at those players’ previous performances and salaries and see how they inflated, then compare them to current players to establish the equivalents.
He has been barely worth this contract over the last 3 years, the best 3 year stretch of his career. This won’t be a good contract.

Go for it, especially if the player left on good terms. I wouldn’t wear a guy’s jersey who went to the Dodgers, for example. You have to have some self-dignity while being an adult and wearing a shirt with someone else’s last name on the back like you wish you where them or wanted to give them tribute.

Seems the Giants “won” in the negotiations, as well. Lincecum was asking $44m and only got $40.5m, just a half-million dollar increase from their initial offer. Good to get this out of the way. And as much as I love Lincecum, I would much rather this 2 yr arbitration avoiding deal than an insane 8 year deal. No way.

It is amazing how similar this played out to his last deal. In both cases, Lincecum asked for too much, and they settled on 2 year deals where the first deal paid slightly more than the Giants offered and the second year paid around what Tim asked for the first year.

Well..
I get your point, but as far as the negotiations for the two year deal itself, the Giants clearly won. They didn’t get the 5 year deal they asked for, but I think there were two routes all along. 1) Long term deal. 2) Avoid arbitration. The 2nd route was the one taken, and the Giants only budged $500,000, while Lincecum budged $3,500,000.

I want to find some good ones for working out. I like the earbuds that have the dealie that goes around my ear because it keeps them from falling out. But I can’t seem to find any that will stay tightly in my ear.
I’m considering trying some over the ear ones because it would eliminate that problem and possibly allow me to crank it up a bit without bothering others. I am worried about the sweat factor with those though.

It’s not like it’s that tough to be taxed at the 15% bracket. You work your whole life and make the money he did, transfer it to investments, and bam, you pretty much just pay capital gains. It’s really not the big deal everyone makes it out to be.

Ok…but why the hate on Romney for this? He’s working within the current tax code. It’s something that anyone would do if they were in his position.

This is such a crucial 2 seasons for the Giants’ future.
We could easily see ourselves in a sticky situation and not be competitors for the rest of the 2010s.
Sabes and the FO need to take a long and hard look at what they have in Linceum, Cain, Brian Wilson, Bumgardner, and Romo.
If we still have all 5 of these players on our roster opening day 2014, and we’re talking about the Giants staying around the salary cap they set for themselves, I honestly feel like we might have a problem.
I love the Beard, but it is time to let him go while he has value, even if it was for a B prospect. I look at how much Papelbon just got paid and I have to believe that Brian Wilson is going to be asking for a high arb number in 2013 and then something like a 4/$50mil in 2014.
I love Timmy. But if he is honestly asking for 8/$180, I just don’t know if I have the balls to give him that much and rely on him to give us 93mph corner fastballs at 34, 35, 36, or 37 years old.
We have to decide if Romo can close for us (which I believe he can), and trade Wilson this deadline (unless we’re seriously competing for the world series).
We have to lock up Cain and eventually Bum. And in doing so, then start explore trade options for Timmy in 2013. As heartbreaking as that sounds, the returns of that trade would be historic, and it sure beats losing out in the FA market by the Yankees and end up with nothing but a bid that was $15 million short.

2017 is the number I've heard.
Raises to Cain, Lincecum, Sandoval, Posey, and Bumgarner will cancel out some of the payroll due to open up when Huff, Affeldt, Sanchez, Pagan, Melky, and Rowand are due to come off the books after next season, but there will be some wiggle room, and then again in 2014 as Lincecum’s deal is up and Zito’s buyout happens, and then again in 2015 with the Zito buyout paid for. During this time payroll projects to continue to expand, and yes, in 2017 the stadium is paid off.
I’ve been saying for a while now that this offseason and next are two of the most crucial for the Giants in terms of juggling payroll, and so far it looks like they’re doing a decent job (lack of big bat aside).

Mostly agree
Hembree is who the scouts think will be Giants closer of future. He can save 6-10 mil a year until he gets to arb years, still wil have savings at that point.
Giants next year will start to have more money, with Melky, Pagan, Sanchez, and Rowand coming off the books, that is 30 mil. Panda is locked in. Tim locked in. Cain is unknown, but hopefully there but not much more than the 15 already given to him in 2012.
And 2014 will have even more with Zito gone.
Even if we lose 1 or 2 of our homegrown guys to FA, we will still have flexibility to sign others. This will hopefully be the last painful off season in the near future.

I spent most of last Jan, feb, and march terrified about the outbreak of whooping cough in CA, because of ignorant fuck-tads who refuse to vaccinate their children. You can’t vaccinate against whooping cough until 3 months old.
Babies have been dying in CA, because of this ignorant anti-vaccine drivel, and I was terrified for my daughters life, because of a disease that had been almost entirely wiped out in this country for over 4 decades.
Ignorance and demagoguery and cynical manipulation of said ignorance sux.

For the first time in two decades, California went a year without any whooping cough deaths, public health officials announced Tuesday.
In 2011, no one died from whooping cough, also known as pertussis, despite high levels of infection. The year before, 10 infants died.A nurse at the Garden Grove Unified School District’s Assessment and Registration Center gets a whooping cough booster shot ready to give to a student in August 2011.
The last time the state went without a whooping cough death was 1991.
State and local health officials credited greater awareness and a massive vaccination campaign. For the first time, a new law required all 7-12 grade students to get the booster shot before enrolling in school last fall.

I had a nurse once tell a patient that vaccines cause autism. I wanted so badly to punch and choke her. If people keep believing this shit and not vaccinating their kids, then there is going to be a measles epidemic. Oh yeah, measles kills 25% of kids that contract it.

One of the things that upsets me about the pro-vaccine movement is the way they disregard the anecdotal evidence of thousands of parents who know that their children were injured by vaccines, as if those people are just brainless monkeys who grunt at each other and can’t tell when their children have been injured. When it happens to a Doctor’s child they don’t even listen.

Unfortunately this is not just an issue in vaccination. There are plenty of examples out there these days. The US Preventative Services Task Force recommending against mammograms for women in their 40s and against PSA-based prostate cancer screening period. The breast cancer drug Avastin losing its FDA approval. Heck, oncology in general these days. These decision all met with much controversy despite the opponents having no good scientific evidence to back their claims. Joe Torre recently said he was certain that a PSA test saved his life. And how many men have been killed or suffered serious harm because of an elevated PSA? Anecdotal evidence makes for bad science and for bad medicine. Google all-metal hip replacements. Pretty sad stuff.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

I understander your anger. Our pediatrician felt like she had to walk on egg shells to convince us to get Aubrey vacinated. The doctor looked so relieved when we basically interrupted her “sales pitch” and said, yes, how soon can we get it.

Sure they overpaid, but about 2-3 mil maybe between the two? Alternative options were either Runzler (and no depth after him) or bidding on Oliver Perez, who still got 4+ mil, or taking a downgrade. Trading for a LH reliever at the deadline is the price that causes Bowker freakout threads.
It was conservative and an overpay, but not by that much.

Everything that held true for the Albert Pujols contract — great for the team in the short term, very risky in the long term — holds true for Fielder and the Tigers as well. He’ll add a little less value in the next year or two than Pujols will to the Los Angeles Angels, but I like Fielder’s chance to hold value deeper into his contract because, at 27, he’s five years younger than Pujols is. That said, Fielder’s still a corner position player with no speed and no defensive value, a player profile that ages very poorly, and he is going to have to get his weight under control if he wants to be a productive player in the back half of this deal, even though there’s no financial incentive for him to do so.

My ex housemate was a good example of this. She was vegan, but she ate so many processed foods (but they’re from the health food store!) that she was always overweight.

I have a vegetarian friend that’s a little thick. He’s not fat, but certainly doesn’t fit the stereotype.
Still, I’m absolutely amazed at just how bad of a diet and/or exercise regimen you have to have to be 275lbs as a vegetarian while being a professional athlete. You can be 2 of those 3 things, but not all 3.
Either that, or Fielder’s meals are like a whale eating plankton.

It wouldn’t be bad if people would keep up with their shit, and learn how stuff works. The washers run 28 minutes, the dryers 60, but 2 washer loads will fit into one dryer. Instead people go one washer to one dryer creating a backlog with the washing machines.

That sucks. When I lived in an apt complex, people used to leave their stuff in the washer or dryer, and forget about it for hours. It was so inconsiderate.
My girlfriend just removes it and does her laundry.
A risky move, but she is diligent about the timing.
I don’t mind taking stuff out of dryers. At the last place we lived I’d fold it up and stack it on top of the dryer. That never seems to be the problem here though, it’s always cold wet muck left in the washers.

Hey, I want to wash my clothes, not cook them. A lot wear happens in the dryer after the clothes are dry and they keep tumbling in high heat…
I have heavy and light coloreds, whites that I cook the shit out of, and delicates (buttoned shirts and so forth). They all get washed separately and they all get dried separately, but I always make damn sure that I’m there when the cycle ends and move them out immediately.
Reading this back, it sounds like I have Jim Crow laundry habits…

I don’t see who you are referring to, but in general I think they are going for platinum blonde and do it inexpertly.
To create platinum blonde hair one dyes with peroxide and then follows with a rinse of methylene blue to take out the yellow, creating a platinum white. But if you use too much methylene blue it can look blueish.

I really honestly don't understand how anyone buys any of it.
