So glad we didn’t get Marco Scutaro. Lopez >> a SS who can barely be a league average bat.

C’mon. Lopez is really important for all those lefties (and righties) we’ll have late innings. Can’t rely on a Romosexual.

Romosexuals are inherently unreliable. If he were really good, he’d strike out at least half of the people that he faced.

Oh thank god. I was kind of looking forward to pointing out that Scutaro was 4x more valuable than Lopez last year, though.

It still bothers me that the Giants spent $9.5 million on two lefty relievers when they had other needs.

That’s my #1 complaint about this offseason. I think it’s weird they didn’t have much money to spend, but if that’s the case I understand. Their allocation of the available money, however, is mind-numbingly inexplicable.

The longer this off season goes on, the more I think they truly believe that Crawford will be worth at least 2 WAR. The optimist in me (it’s a very small, frail part of me, it should be on life support, but it isn’t) wants to say that having Field fx let them know that his defense is so good that even if he hits .200/.250/.275 he’ll be worth 1.5 WAR.
They’re hoping like hell for Burriss, but I think they truly believe in Crawford. I’ll just have to hope like hell they’re right.

I think they’re being cheap, and he probably sold more T-shirts than Miggy. They’ve been burned for years on bad SS, and probably have no confidence in their own ability to scout one anymore. So they’re giving Crawford a chance. If it fails miserably, they do something at the deadline.
Hey, you’re supposed to be fretting over Tim & Matt right now, get with the program!
2012 is going to be awesome!
While I am cynical enough to believe in the t-shirts part of this, I doubt that it was their primary concern. More likely, the ownership group really is holding the budget to 130 million without exception and having a league minimum shortstop allows the Giants to fill other spots they (stupidly) believe are more important.

The fact that Boston probably doesn’t make this deal under the old CBA, when Lopez and Affeldt were signed. Or the fact that we don’t know who initiated the trade talks. And the fact that we don’t know whether Scutaro was being openly shopped. Or the fact that the move was probably reactive in the face of the Yankees’ aggressive moves to acquire pitching (since at face value this move frees up payroll for Oswalt). Or the fact that we don’t know if the Giants inquired on Scutaro earlier, but the price dropped when it became a payroll move for the Sox.
I wish we had acquired him too, but it’s not like Scutaro was up on Craigslist with an OBO tag.

I’d just like to reiterate that there isn’t some bulletin board where players are posted with tags and phone numbers at the bottom. The Scutaro news came out of nowhere, so it was probably a recent development, so it seems unlikely that the Red Sox were actively shopping him until recently if at all.

I'm no businessman.
But it seems like a pretty basic principle that if you want to maximize your return, you get as many people bidding on your asset as possible. I can’t believe Cherington would just trade Scutaro to the first person to offer a bad pitcher and some salary relief. Scutaro was a 2.7 WAR player last year. Thats worth a lot.

Maybe they had interest in Mortensen for some reason (hell if I know why.)
My point remains the same that there are so many unknowns, including the nearly two months between the Affelt/Lopez signings and the Scutaro trade, that making this 1:1 analogy loses all sense of context.
There’s also the fact that the Giants would have to take on that $6M in payroll.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
It certainly suggests that the Giants did not turn over every rock looking for a shortstop this off-season. Coupled with the “pitching is our gold standard” comment(s), this seems 100% accurate.

I understand your argument, and it makes sense. It’s just frustrating seeing all these SSs moving around the MLB for such little cost. If not Scutaro, we could have had Lowrie. If not Lowrie, we could have had Aviles last year. Or Hardy, or Bartlett.
Carter Jurica!
"Has anyone really been for even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?"
by GrahamCrakalaka on Jan 24, 2012 12:05 AM PST up reply actions
Lowrie probably would’ve cost Romo, and probably another arm just because of 5 years of control the Red Sox got with Melancon. All the players you mention and the deals that netted them certainly seem(ed) within the realm of possibility for the Giants, but I think we should all just agree that improving shortstop wasn’t a priority for a team or if it was they weren’t very creative in figuring out how to do so. We might assume that because we don’t know that they didn’t try that they must have, but I’m just going to judge them by the results.
by Every6thDay on Jan 24, 2012 12:09 AM PST up reply actions
I think Hembree could have gotten Lowrie. He’s projected better than Melancon. The only problem being that he’s probably still about a year away, and the Red Sox likely wanted a major league ready player. But for an extra year of control, and likely a better player, I think they might have taken it.
Carter Jurica!
"Has anyone really been for even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?"
by GrahamCrakalaka on Jan 24, 2012 12:14 AM PST up reply actions
Maybe,
but Melancon has been pretty remarkable in his brief time up. He’s not a prospect at this point so there’s more certainty.
by Every6thDay on Jan 24, 2012 12:16 AM PST up reply actions
He's got about 2 seasons under his belt.
I think “remarkable” might be a little bit of an overstatement for a 3.21 ERA and a 3.47 FIP. It’s solid though. And the certainty is definitely a valid point. You could make an argument like this for just about every shortstop that was moved, but the Giants should have figured out a way to get one of them.

"Has anyone really been for even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?"
by GrahamCrakalaka on Jan 24, 2012 12:25 AM PST up reply actions
Well
Yeah, for whatever reason, the Giants seem relatively unwilling to give up minor leaguers at this point.
Believe me, I wish we had a better option than Crawford too, but at this point they have developed a very predictable approach. Hard cap on Opening Day that will be adjusted ad hoc as that season goes on, an emphasis on role players and increasingly an eye towards younger players where they can help it (possibly an issue with Scutaro, though they did reportedly go after Gonzalez), and protect our minor leaguers when we can help it.
I would have been as thrilled as anybody with a Runzler for Scutaro deal as anyone, but it didn’t happen. I don’t know why it didn’t happen, but given the evidence we have to go on, we have a few reasonable theories to look at.
A) The Giants don’t like Scutaro for whatever reason, be it age, medicals, or scouting of some kind.
B) The Giants really like Runzler (or whichever trade chip) for whatever reason.
C) The Red Sox didn’t like what the Giants had to offer for whatever reason.
D) The Giants never got a chance to elbow in on the bidding.
E) The Giants were unwilling to take on the salary.
F) All the other GMs hate dealing with Sabean, so they skipped him in the rolodex.
Of those, I’d consider B, C, and E the three most likely explanations, probably in tandem to some degree.
What doesn’t seem likely to me is this scenario where Sabean in November staring at a whiteboard with Lopez and Runzler on one side, and Scutaro on the other side, and him saying, “Yeah… Gotta go with the LOOGY here.”
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Not in that way. More like:
“Guys, first thing’s first: lock up our pitching. That’s our strength. We’ll figure out the rest after that.”
And, like you said, the new CBA was still an unknown. The Red Sox are suddenly spendthrift because of the luxury tax modifications. Scutaro probably wasn’t even available at that point. I think the annoyance with the Affeldt/Lopez deals was how they almost immediately took away all the Giants’ financial flexibility before the market even developed.
by Every6thDay on Jan 24, 2012 12:25 AM PST up reply actions
But at the end of the day, the Giants needed to improve the shortstop position and did not.
Unlike past seasons, I’ve yet to hear Sabean or the managing general partner du jour say that thing about payroll flexibility mid-season. I am not getting on you, Solidarity, for assuming this, because it really has been customary for the organization to do this, but as I recall, we usually hear a comment confirming this. We still might, as Spring Training has yet to begin, but this off-season certainly feels different in terms of financial flexibility.
by Every6thDay on Jan 24, 2012 12:29 AM PST up reply actions
Before the 2010 season, there was talk about the Giants having a hard cap at $90M, but… well, we all know what happened in 2010. Though I will concede that those rumors were much more isolated than what the Giants have been saying during this offseason.
I do know, however, that they are on the record as saying that they like to have room to maneuver during the season so they can fill in as needed.
I also think that they really do think Crawford will be passable at SS this season, if sub-optimal. I just Hope Like Hell™ that they’re right.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Seriously
Considering the Giants are an organization that would rather undergo a collective root canal than hand a young position player a job without any competition or back up plan, the fact that they are willing to go into the season with Crawford at short says all I need to know about whether he’s ready. For all the talk of pinching pennies, there’s no way this team would leave that big of a hole at short if they weren’t confident that Crawford could fill it. Besides, does anyone really want to see yet another grizzled, 90 year old vet there.
California Leaguers beware: Chris Gloor will strike you out faster than you can say "Quinnipiac", or he would have if he had pitched more than five innings this year before getting hurt...

I do know, however, that they are on the record as saying that they like to have room to maneuver during the season so they can fill in as needed.
The funny part is that they’re pretty good at guaranteeing there will be a hole (or a couple) that needs filling.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
I think it’s interesting that they said the payroll would come out to $130M, and after all the arb stuff, pending an agreement with Lincecum, they’re going to come out exactly where they said they would be. To me, that suggests a great amount of prior planning, and that they had very good estimates of what people were going to make (though I will acknowledge they could control their destiny somewhat in that respect).
As to the timing of the LOOGY deals? I still think it comes down to a matter of scarcity, and not liking the cheap alternatives in Runzler and Verdugo. By signing them early, they faced no competition from outside bids, which helped them maintain that hard $130M cap.
The one thing I don’t get it is where Alex Gonzalez fits in, other than the possibility that the money that would have gone to him was instead used to retain Mota, Whiteside, and Fontenot, given than the Pagan trade was effective a financial wash when you factor in Ramirez along with Torres.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
By signing them early, they faced no competition from outside bids
I can’t really say for sure that they got good deals on them though. Of all the relievers signed so far this offseason, Jeremy Affeldt is making more money this year than any other non-closer. Lopez is 3rd, only .25 million behind Darren Oliver. I will concede that that it is was/is a pretty weak market. It’s possible that Affeldt would have gotten much more on the open market. It was probably smart to sign one of them early, but they should have let the other one walk. It certainly is nice to have two good lefties in the pen, but I don’t think it is nearly as important as replacing Crawford would be.

I don’t know how much faith you have in ZiPs, but it projects Lopez to be below-average, with Runzler 2 ERA+ points worse than him. I’m not sure what the dollars-to-ERA+ points conversion factor is, but I don’t think it’s anywhere close to the difference in their salaries.

3.70 seems like a pretty negative projection on Lopez. Obviously his nightmare season in Boston counts, but I think he’s a bit better than ZiPS believes, especially if he’s being used as a LOOGY (something that having Affeldt definitely makes more likely).
I don’t think the Giants trust Runzler at this juncture, and I can’t blame them. I don’t mind him as the 11th man, but he looked fucking lost out there last season.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
His career ERA is 3.96, but I agree that the last few years should be weighted a little more heavily. For some reason, most people seem to disagree though. Bill James projects 3.68 and RotoChamp predicts 3.75. I would guess it has a lot to do with his age.

Yeah, I would have been fine with keeping only one as well. I’m just trying (hopelessly) to divine what their motivations were. I suspect that they knew that they were overpaying for Affeldt, but the extra cash pretty much bought them cost certainty, and what they regard as an alternative option for closer if Romo and Wilson should get injured again.
We can’t know obviously, but my suspicion is that if they don’t both go on the DL in August, then Affeldt becomes a free agent, Runzler is in the pen, Crawford is in Fresno and they sign a shortstop of some description. Perhaps Carroll.

It's an emotional move
Something that the Giants could stand to succumb to less often, in my estimation.
Casilla is half the price of Affeldt, though you never know if or when he’ll go all Denny Bautista on us.
They overvalue the bullpen, and are trying to avoid volatility (hence overpaying for the vets instead of throwing Runzler and Verdugo in there). But either way, the money is spent now, and the FO’s overreaction to last season has come and gone.

by GuyWhiteyCorngood on Jan 24, 2012 9:48 AM PST up reply actions
The word “dumpster”, first used commercially in 1936,1 came from the Dempster-Dumpster system of mechanically loading the contents of standardized containers onto garbage trucks, which was patented by Dempster Brothers in 1937.23 The containers were called Dumpsters, a portmanteau of the company’s name with the word dump. However, it took the Dempster Dumpmaster, the first successful front-loading garbage truck (which used this system), to popularize the word.
The word dumpster has had at least three trademarks associated with it by Dempster Brothers,456 but today it is often used as a genericized trademark.

I believe this is the case with jobs with major damage to the body, like feature running backs. Running backs have to get paid when they are young because they just don’t age well at all. Gore was only effective because he had chances to rest with Hunter being a total depth beast.

finding feature backs is pretty uncommon now. Teams are drafting small quick backs like Charles, McCluster, Hunter. They just can’t take the abuse despite being great athletes. Teams are trying to maximize their investments by limiting touches. Who can blame them? RB’s are expensive flashes in a pan.

And I know this is crazy, but I’d rather have Ross than both Affeldt/Lopez (if we’re still assuming we’re working with the strict budget).

From MLBTR’s summary of a recent Rosenthal column:
The Red Sox seem to have interest in acquiring an everyday shortstop and the Reds, Giants and Rays are looking for veteran shortstop help, Rosenthal writes.
If the Red Sox are interested in acquiring an everyday shortstop, why did they trade Scutaro?
If the Giants are looking for veteran shortstop help, why didn’t they trade for Scutaro?

Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
I've been holding this position ever since the trade happened
28 other teams passed on trading more than Mortensen for Scutaro.
The Boston Red Sox traded him for nothing just to dump his salary. They picked up his option hoping a trade market would exist for him. 28 other GMs don’t think he is worth his salary.
The bottom line is could the Giants have used him? Yes of course. But perhaps LOLOLD is one of the reason why he isn’t nearly as much of an upgrade as his 2010 numbers would indicate.
I’m disappointed the Giants didn’t get in, but I’m not going to go out of my way to question the FO knowing ultimately every team passed on the chance of having him play SS for them. (Rockies are using him at 2B) and I certainly ain’t gonna kill myself over it.

Another way to think about this is

They could do that while trading Scutaro for a better prospect
But they couldn’t find a deal better than Mortensen. So they took that. Because they picked up his option. Hey, Free Clayton Mortensen!

And then there's Lowrie.
I know the Giants would’ve been hard-pressed to match Melancon in terms of a prospect, but, yeah, the Red Sox had a surplus of average middle infielders, a desperate are of need for the Giants. I know that just because we didn’t hear about the Giants’ involvement doesn’t mean they were never involved, but I can’t help but think that they were not. Additionally, it’d be nice if someone close to the Giants who gets paid to ask questions asks this very question.

is making a big of an assumption regarding market efficiency in the majors.
Furthermore, it’s not like every team passed on him. Some of them already have competent shortstops.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
This is specious.
28 other teams did not pass on Scutaro, because 28 teams did not need Scutaro. The Giants desperately needed Scutaro, and chose not to acquire him.
And Marco Scutaro is not some sort of foreign player whose future need be viewed suspiciously. He has been playing in the major leagues for 10 years. You can go look at his stats. They exist. Scutaro missed some time with injury at the beginning of last year, but he had 250+ PAs after the all star break while hitting .329/.382/.467.
Your appeal to authority on this issue makes no sense at all. Scutaro was obviously available for nothing but salary, would have represented a significant upgrade for the Giants, and is a quality player and has been one for years.
The most delightful ecumenical contradiction in nomenclature.
Dursh nerf darsh narf. Poop.
Of course everything is available for salary
But 130M is the set payroll. And the front office obviously feel 6M for Scutaro is not as good as 4.5M for Javier Lopez.
You have a problem with that. I know. I MIGHT have a problem with that, but I’m not as convinced as you are about Scotaro’s 2011 potential because of age. So at the end of the day, I choose to believe that teams have scouting reports that says don’t take Scutaro at 6M

To be fair, I don’t know that it is obvious, given that they decided to spend the 4.5 M on Lopez before they knew that Scutaro would be available for 6 M.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
And...
The new CBA wasn’t in place when the Giants re-signed Lopez and I think the new luxury tax rules are what’s forcing Boston’s decision-making.
Why the CBA wasn’t worked out such that it would be put into affect at the beginning of an offseason is entirely beyond me.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
Yeah, that was weird.
Also, I’d like to amend my comment. “I think” makes it sound like I’m trying to drop some knowledge on everybody. It’s pretty damned obvious that the new luxury tax rules are influencing the Red Sox’s decision-making right now.
I think a couple things are fairly obvious
1) Sabean knew that the payroll was fixed at 130 million going into the offseason.
2) Sabean, knowing that the payroll was fixed, committed 9.5 million in 2012 salary to Lopez and Affeldt.
3) Sabean, therefore, knew that that 9.5 million dollars would be unavailable to upgrade the offense.
I do not think it is a stretch to say that Sabean prioritized left handed relievers over offensive upgrades.
Scutaro in particular? No, as you point out, he wasn’t available until later.
But it’s pretty clear what Sabean knew and when he knew it.
And knowing that, we see that he deliberately chose to commit most of his available money to left handed relievers instead of offensive help.
The most delightful ecumenical contradiction in nomenclature.
Dursh nerf darsh narf. Poop.
Oh, I agree with you. The allocation of funds has been pretty dumb if Sabean actually knew that there was a hard cap. And given everything I’ve seen this season, he absolutely knew there was a hard cap.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
I think that’s about right but I also think they decided to go with their strength, pitching— at the expense of their offense and didn’t want to possibly weaken their best attribute.

Why?
What made it special other than it was a mediocre crime movie, with decent acting and film student style with a budget?
Disclaimer: not an expert.
I’m not a film student and I definitely wouldn’t consider myself an expert, but I really enjoyed the film. First off, I thought the soundtrack was great. Second, even though the lack of dialogue early on was a little weird, as the movie went on I started to appreciate the way the emptiness made the movie feel. I think the contrast between drive and most movies I see was, in a way, refreshing for me. The big thing for me was the mood the whole movie had. I was completely drawn in. My experience might not be typical, but I think that’s why I enjoyed it so much.

I liked it as well, and I agree that that as the movie went on I appreciated the emptiness. It was like his driving – what made him such a good driver was as much what he didn’t do as what he did, and I felt his character was developed as much by what he didn’t say as what he said.

Nah, to me it was an entirely empty slate that others have been projecting into
I saw no development whatsoever. There was a defined character, but he just went through the motions of the movie, the vehicle to express the director’s “talents”
Most years are going to look pretty weak now that they’re nominating 9 films for Best Picture. The Oscars are suddenly like the NBA playoffs. If you limited it to the top 4 it wouldn’t look so bad. The thing I would like to see change is let movie theaters make money off of the first 3 weeks of release, or whatever it is. I feel like if movie theaters weren’t forced to make their money off of ridiculous concession stand prices, going to a movie might be affordable for a family to do, and then they would go and do it. And overall revenue would go up.
I’m no business major, and I have no proof that this would happen, but it seems plausible to me.

As TVs keep getting larger and their images sharper
movie theatre audiences keep getting smaller.
It’s too bad. There’s something very primal about entering a darkened room with a crowd and seeing huge stories flickering on the wall. The Allegory of the Cave springs to mind, obviously.

I’ve stopped going to movies primarily because most of the movies out there seem completely and totally blah and I’m finding that TV shows- either on now— or from a few years ago that I can find on Netflix and Roku are infinitely more entertaining and better. I’m watching both Twin Peaks and Friday Night Lights right now and I can’t think of any movie right now that’s more compelling

Counterpoint.
The Kids are Alright
The Social Network
True Grit
127 Hours
Avatar
The Blind Side
Precious
A Serious Man
This years does look weaker than those, but it is certainly intensified by the broadened field. Last year was an unusually strong year for movies. There are rarely more than 4 or 5 that merit any consideration.

I'm not sure I follow your counterpoint.
Are we for the expanded list? because other than Avatar and The Blind Side, those are all really good movies.
I am against the expanded list. Personally, I don’t think those are Academy Award worthy movies. There are a few Academy Award worthy performances within them, but in my opinion they are not great films.
by BestHyperboleEver on Jan 24, 2012 8:32 AM PST up reply actions
If you're going to give Avatar a nod
I don’t get why you don’t give Harry Potter a nod for all the franchise accomplished. Putting out 8 quality moves, even with expansive source material, is really impressive.

Upon reconsidering.
I maintain that there are rarely more than 4 or 5 films that warrant nomination but I agree that this year even those top 4 are a bit weak.
by BestHyperboleEver on Jan 24, 2012 8:40 AM PST up reply actions
Unfortunately since it's such a self-congratulatory whack-off fest
They’ll never not nominate 10 due there being less than 10 worthy nominees. However, in my idyllic outlook, they’d allow there to be up to 10 but usually only nominate 4-6
I disagree..
I think even the “Top 4 is weak”
Social Network, Kings Speech, Black Swan, True Grit/Fighter was pretty strong top 4 last year
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
Exactly. It's a weak year.
If Terrence Malick is your thing, Tree of Life’s pretty decent, but it comes with a heavy weight of being a Malick flick.
Tree of Life is in my queue right now
We’ll see.
I also don’t think I can get on board with this The Artist train
Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close got a straight-up 'F' from the AV Club.
I thought that there was no mandated number of nominees because the automatic ten was felt to be watering things down.

Yeah, but to be fair, the AV Club can be pretty damn pretentious
Even if I tend to agree most of the time.
Pretentiousness was exactly what they hated about the movie.
In the aftermath of 9/11, the question arose of when it would be appropriate for popular art to address the events head-on. For a national tragedy of that magnitude, when would it not be "too soon"? Yet Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close, an appalling adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, suggests that maybe that’s the wrong question. The 2006 docudrama United 93, once the trial balloon for "too soon," dodged exploitation by focusing rigorously on the minutiae of a single flight. But it will always be "too soon" for Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close, which processes the immense grief of a city and a family through a conceit so nauseatingly precious that it’s somehow both too literary and too sentimental, cloying yet aestheticized within an inch of its life. It’s 9/11 through the eyes of a caffeinated 9-year-old Harper’s contributor.

The Orioles announced that they have signed Wilson Betemit to a two-year, Major League contract that includes a vesting option for 2014. Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com adds that Betemit will be Baltimore’s primary DH and that the option is based on plate appearances (Twitter links). Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun first reported the move (via Twitter). Betemit is represented by the Wasserman Media Group.

Authorities say instead of stainless steel posts for root canals, he used sections of paper clips — which can cause pain and even infection — in an effort to save money.
Attorney General Martha Coakley says paper clips can sometimes be used temporarily, but the 53-year-old Clair used the paper clips as a permanent fix.

by Every6thDay on Jan 24, 2012 11:39 AM PST up reply actions
my take
Ron Moore: yay!
Brannon Braga: okay in small doses, but Voyager was all Braga, all the time. Meh.
Rene Echevarria: the only one on the staff who knew how to write episodes with emotional depth.
Taylor & Fuller: were only occasional writers on DS9 before becoming staff writers on VOY and Enterprise, so I don’t know as much about them.
Robert Hewitt Wolfe: he and Behr became tag-team writers later, but I like some of his earlier stuff like “The Wire” (not to be confused with the series).
Ira Steven Behr: eventually the staff boss. He tended toward wild and slightly unfocused action stories with Big Plot Events, mixed in with the occasional character study.
In the DS9 era, I also liked Hans Beimler and Peter Allan Fields.

meh, it's just focus
Generations focused on Picard and Data; Stewart did fine and Spiner really overacted
First Contact I thought everyone was fine
Insurrection focused on Picard and Stewart did ok (I think he and Spiner were right on in their assessment of the script)
Nemesis focused on Picard and Data and everybody stunk.
OTOH, Dorn was fine in DS9.
I think it took itself just a bit too seriously.
ST should have perspective on the fact that it’s just a Western with gadgets.

If the Kyle’s supposedly sore or separated shoulder is not to be used as an excuse and had no effect upon his performance, then why are you telling us about it?

"He thinks he may have separated his shoulder in the third quarter, so he is in the training room," Kenny Williams told ESPN by phone from San Francisco. "That information he has not said anything about publicly and will not because he felt strongly that he could get the job done. There are no excuses; we don’t do that. I don’t want that misconstrued."
If it had no bearing on his performance and the implication of it being an excuse is insulting, there’s no reason to talk about it. We know that football players are banged up by late January.

Wait. I thought this meant they were off on the nature of a long-term deal. Like, maybe the Giants want 5 and Team Tim wants 7-8. The Giants offer $100MM for those 5, Team Tim wants $180MM for 7/8. Isn’t that what that meant?
And, more importantly, isn’t that just Heyman’s speculation, as it seems like simply an amalgamation of reported figures from the past week and a half?

We're never going to have to hear about Tim Lincecum and the Giants and arbitration ever again.

They do, though it's much more restrictive.
Lincecum will almost certainly be eligible, though.

I think this was the last year. I believe the new thing is that you have extend a qualifying offer to the player that has an AAV = the top X at the position.

Anyone catch Lowell Cohn’s blog where he ripped Harbaugh and called him an 11 year old?
I found it quite douchey.
On Monday, Harbaugh held his season wrap-up news conference and it was revealing in ways Harbaugh probably doesn’t understand. Near the end of the session, the Chronicle’s Eric Branch, who used to work for The Press Democrat, asked an easy-to-answer human-interest question.
"How did you spend your time after the game? What did you do last night?"
Harbaugh shot Branch a look as if Branch had asked about Harbaugh’s sex life. Harbaugh giggled nervously.
"I was a …" He giggled again. "Is this California?" he demanded. "Where everybody just wants to know how you feel, what you thought, how you did, how your pinky feels?"
The pinky reference was a direct shot at me. I was the pinky asker. Harbaugh stood there, his jaw rigid.
"You’re part Californian," I reminded him.
Harbaugh still didn’t answer.
"We want to hear an answer to the question," I told Harbaugh.
"You demand an answer to the question?" he said.
I imagined the prepubescent buzz in the voice of an 11-year-old as he blew off his mommy.
What a fucking moron.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
Imagine, after a hard fought season and gut-wrenching loss, a coach not wanting to give adequate respect and due consideration to your ridiculously trivial little question.
If you ask me (and I’m not sure why you would) most reporters/media outlets have gotten a little big for their britches.

I think "how did you deal with the loss" is a fair question.
And “I really don’t want to talk about it just yet” is a fair answer.
Both sides could’ve stood to be a little less snippy with each other, but the real line-crossing is publishing a petulant finger-pointing story about it.

Quote from my adopted son Mike Krukow: "We're the Giants. We're San Francisco. And we're World Series Champions!"
So dumb
I thought, ‘We’re a well-coached team,’" Harbaugh said.
Note: My mother always told me, "Don’t blow your own horn, son."
There are other coaches on the team
Invoking the Tuck Rule was the living end. The notorious Tuck Rule and what it did to the Raiders against New England 10 years ago continues to be an outrage in the NFL. It is perceived as one of the greatest injustices any team had to endure. The ruling on
Bradshaw does not exist at that level and it certainly did not affect the outcome of the game as the Tuck Rule did.
I would argue that it was close.

I don’t think he’d have to be 5 WAR, we’ll have to see how the money is spread out to be sure, but he certainly needs to be worth 4 WAR, and 4 WAR DHs are pretty rare.

Has Fielder been inconsistant? It seems like the only things inconsistent in his numbers are the baserunning and fielding components to his WAR which are inherently relatively inconsistant and unreliable, aren’t they?
