Who is the backup to Williams as a return man?
Williams made a really, really dangerous sliding catch on one return, called for a fair catch on another with plenty room to run, all before his fumbles. Shouldn’t Seely have seen this and replaced him with someone who had more experience?

I dunno
I’d say that Harbaugh is the kind of guy who sticks with “his guys”, but Williams was just so clearly a mess back there, that he probably should have been replaced after the diving catch.

There are usually two guys back there on kickoffs. You just usually don’t see the second guy end up with it, but it happens.

don’t they usually defer to the better returner once the ball is in flight? perhaps with Ginn out, they said whoever’s side the ball comes to takes it, no deferring.

Not removing Williams was Harbaugh's biggest mistake
It was obvious from his first 2 returns that he was going to do something stupid. He should have been taken out before he had a chance to lose the game.
I think Harbaugh is one of those “we had the right guy up there” kinda folk.

It still boggles my mind that he wants to stay in SF. I mean, I’m all for it, but really?
The first six innings are overrated.
The team has averaged 89 wins the last three seasons.
The fans by all accounts have been great. The organization by all accounts is great. He was drafted, developed, and leaned upon by the Giants. He started his family while he was a Giant and is raising a family here. The Giants have a large payroll to pay both him and good teammates. He can cement a legacy by staying with one team. He feels wanted here.
Makes perfect sense to me.

You know that isn’t true. A turnover that sets the opponent up with prime field position is way more damaging that 3-and-out and a decent punt.

If you have one turnover that sets the other team up, and one drive that goes three plays, 25 seconds, and puts them back on their side of the field, no, you’re absolutely right. Those two things are not equal.
If you have two turnovers that sets the other team up, and 7* three-and-outs that last a grand total of 6 minutes, you may be approaching some sort of equivalency there.
*I’ve been saying 9, but looking closer, two of those short drives were the TDs so I’ll stop putting them in there.

Wide open
He threw to Davis several times before VD was actually open. What I saw at the game was that Crabtree was throwing too many moves in the first five yards in order to shake his guy, and by the time he got open the pressure changed the play enough that he wasn’t a realistic choice.

Those ar the big three, but I think WR is where you can see the most immediate returns with a first round pick, unless they trade waaaaay up for, say, one of the O-linemen from Stanford.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong
I feel like good guards/centers are usually available near the end of the first
and I think RG and maybe C (longterm, since Goodwin is a bit older) is a need.
Like, O-line depth is one of the biggest needs. I think the main five is solid enough, but if one guy goes out and Chilo is forced in? Oh gawd.

He had a horrible game, but it’s not all bad. If Smith would have hit him on that deep route, we’d be singing his praises. He had a pretty solid second season for a WR drafted in the 6th round last year. He has the potential to be a dangerous player out of the slot.

Well, injuries could be blamed to some extent
Josh Morgan looked like he was putting together a good season before he got hurt, then Braylon Edwards couldn’t stay on the field, and then Ted Ginn got hurt last week.
Not that this group was a bunch of world-beaters or anything, but when healthy they were better than this.
The thing is that he’s actually a good returner when he catches the ball. He got some good returns tonight.
But his decision-making absolutely sucks. Some of that may just be from being a rookie, which is why Harbaugh should have had him on a short leash in a game like this. Not doing so came back to bite him.
The thing is that he’s actually a good returner when he catches the ball.

The 49ers offense played like the 49ers offense
Not a ton of points, but you get a couple of big plays and don’t turn it over. They did that, which is generally what has been expected of them. The defense played a great game too. The difference was 2 horrible fumbles on punt returns.
That’s not to say that we couldn’t have won if the offense had been better, but against the Giants D, did you really expect that? The Niners O played about like I expected them to play.
I think Kyle Williams is most immediately responsible for the loss. There’s a very direct line of cause and effect that puts a lot of responsibility in his hands*. However, the series of events that took place to make his mistakes relevant can be attributed to virtually everybody on the team who wasn’t part of the defense, including the coaches.

Looking at the replay, the guy tackling him didn’t even really go for the strip. It almost looked like the contact was incidental.

It was probably not a good idea to try returning that punt in so much traffic (fair catch is better). And if you do, BOTH ARMS around the ball, son!

when I was 14, I played the most in organized baseball than I ever had (a lot more), and in the playoffs I caught what I thought was the final out in the 9th of a tie game, but there were only two outs. My errant throw got by the third baseman, and the winning run scored. Our season was over. Never heard a peep about it from my teammates, which is remarkable. I never made that mistake again. So, I feel for Kyle Williams, and I like that his teammates are sticking by him. He looks pretty talented, so I hope he bounces back next year. (Although, not as a punt returner, perhaps!)

He was probably the third or fourth most effective runner from the 2011 draft, and that number goes down if you don’t include Cam Newton.

They should just line up with Hunter and Gore in the backfield. Gore is a good blocker, and it doesn’t let the defense know what you’re trying to do.

I don't expect Jackson to anything except ra-ra drivel, what else is he going to do?
I still think he’s a sacrificial lamb, though. He talks a good game about the defense, but I think it’s pretty obvious that he’s confused pace with performance. The warriors are built to be a fast-paced team. They can’t defend OR score in a half court pace. It’s the classic coaching mistake of putting the scheme ahead of the talent.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
I really do like what he’s doing with the team, their assistant coach is one of the best assistants in the game, and could very well be a head coach. They’re actually playing slightly better defense than last year, but it hurts when you have no big man. But i like Jackson, just need pieces, it’s a players league, and talent driven
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker
One of the best moments in Giants history, 11/1/2010
At what cost? You can’t play half court with no big man and a completely perimeter focus and expect to get anywhere but higher in the draft rankings. Which is fine with me, but I don’t think that’s his plan. They’re trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, and it’s failing miserably.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
That’s why eventually they’ll have to blow this team up. You have got to trade Steph/Monta either, and get some sort of value back for a pick, or a piece to the puzzle.
Udoh is great against 4s his size, Lee is nothing on D, they have no center. This is why i’d rather see the team just play Jenkins, Thompson, and Tyler a ton, what’s there to lose
Proud adoptive father of the fastest guy in the Giants system, Jarrett Parker

It's just so tough to rebuild in the NBA
It seems like you have to assemble a team all at once or not at all. You can’t just sit back and acquire pieces to work your way out of the cellar, because the window of team control on draftees is so short and the salary cap/luxury tax so restrictive.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
Well, they have a prime opportunity now. You have the best draft class in a while coming up, and Steph/Monta to handle

They're not extending him either, at anything near to that price.
Which, at the moment, leaves the worst alternative of all: let him walk in two years.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
You'll get nothing for him in 2013.
If they wait that long, they’ll be better off settling for the draft pick (IIRC, they can still get draft picks out of players of Lincecum’s calibre)
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
What?
I admit I haven’t figured out the new rules, but I don’t see how Tim loses that much value.
2012 is going to be awesome!
So then they have to pony up like every other team.
Might as well just wait the two years and see if whether he breaks down first.
2012 is going to be awesome!
I'm not worried about him breaking down over the next two years, though.
If they’re going to cave, do it now. Signing him through age 35 would be bad enough, I don’t want to wait two years and then give him an 8 year deal.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
But if you have to pay full price now
you might as well wait to make sure he’s still worth it in two years.
2012 is going to be awesome!

The long you wait, the liess likely the deal will be worth it, and the more you’re probably going to end up spending.
I don’t want Lincecum on an 8 year deal, at all, but if the team’s going to do it, I’d rather it be over 8 years from now than 10.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
Let me put it this way, and take what you would do out of the equation.
1) I think the Giants will cave to his demands, ultimately, because they’re overly concerned about PR, and Lincecum’s hugely popular.
2) If they’re going to cave, like I think they are, I’d rather they do it now than two years from now.
3) If I had my druthers, they wouldn’t cave to an 8-year demand at all, and I believe you agree.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
I disagree with #1. This team has lots of heroes, even Tim isn’t worth whatever the hell he asks for. At least I hope they realise this.

He’s never been worth 2 fWAR in a year. Just because he’s not being overpaid by a ton doesn’t mean that he’s not being overpaid.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
fWAR gives added value to closers for leverage. So if he pitches as a closer as he has as a set-up man, one would expect his value to go up.

He pitched as their closer last year, and he was at 1.7 fWAR.
Dude is overpaid.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
My guess would be no. There are may be some at bats where the leverage is higher, but generally those are resolved after one at bat (with a decrease in the LI) or the manager will go to the closer at that point.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
To wit
Madson had a 2.25 FIP in 60 inning in 2011, and was worth 1.7 fWAR.
Wilson averaged about 73 IP and a 2.35 FIP in 2009 and 2010, and averaged 2.45 fWAR.
The IP makes a difference, but the number of save opportunities makes a big difference. I suspect Madson will get more than 32 saves next year.

I think Sabean balks at handing the job to a unknown commodity as long as the team has legitimate playoff hopes. He just doesn’t have it in him to go with an unproven closer unless it’s a lost season. It would take a mid-season injury to force that kind of move.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO

Some people look at the Giants lack of future obligations and see potential improvement.through massive change.
I fear the front office looks at it and has already decided to spend most of it on keeping what we have, with maybe a couple million left over for marginal upgrades.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
But what if it’s Timmy, Matt, Pablo, Baumgarner, and then when it’s his turn- Buster? They have a really good nucleus and so the decision is to keep it or blow it up a bit.
by Dingoes Ate My Baby on Jan 22, 2012 11:03 PM PST up reply actions
Because those aren't the only ones they'll keep.
They’ll also keep the overpriced middle relievers, the proven closers, and the expensive veteran filler (and if not the exact same players, then FA version of similar high cost). And we’ll end up with basically what we have now, just more and more expensive as the young guys move through arbitration and reach free agency.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
They’re basically clearing the decks in a couple of years salary and player wise so maybe it’s some plan to keep the nucleus intact. Or so I hope. You’re vision is probably much closer to mine but I do think the FO has some sort of plan mapped out.

Over $100M, not $100M on the button.
Also, this is how negotiation works of course. Tim says 8/200, the Giants say 5/110, and they see who is willing to slide past the middle, which I assume is somewhere around 6/150.
"I see these guys walking around with rings on, and I want one. That's what it's all about." -Ryan Vogelsong

Which team does everyone think suffered the most heartbreaking loss? The 49ers struggling with offensive ineptitude, Kyle Williams’ fumbles, and the quick whistle on forward progress? That was one of the most awful games I ever watched. The final score should have been something like 30-13 49ers if not for:
- Two picks thrown so poorly by Manning that not one, but two, defenders have such easy picks they actually knock each other out of the play.
- Terrible early whistle on a fumble by the Giants with ~2 minutes to go that would have almost ended the game.
- Kyle Williams. Holy lord Kyle Williams, what were you doing that game?

This line
Injuries to Morgan and Ginn really hurt us today. We needed WRs and we had none. We needed a punt returner and we had worse than none. Then T. Brown gets knocked out of the game by Goldson, replaced by the execrable Tramaine Brock, who promptly gets burned on the TD by Manningham.
The conditions were supposed to be our ally, but I thought they hurt us more than them. Lee didn’t seem to be as comfortable as the NYG punter. Crabtree couldn’t get open, although that may have been more due to the fact that he was the 49ers’ only WR. Either way, Crabtree was of no value. I thought he disappeared after getting the TD early in the Saints game, and he never came back.
I also thought the Niners had a chance to put a stranglehold on the game when they had 2nd and 4, and 3rd and 1 inside NYG territory and failed to keep the drive going.

Its a tough call, no doubt. But I personally would have preferred to not risk giving the NYG a little momentum shift by turning it over on downs. And the fact they used Dixon on 3rd and 1 doesn’t inspire confidence in what their 4th and 1 playcall would have been
On the other hand, getting that 4th and 1 gives the Niners a little push too, maybe it gets going and turns into points. At that point, given the tempo of the game, I think it was the right call.

I’m disappointed and frustrated that we beat ourselves, but hey…5 times we’ve won in my lifetime. We’ve had more than our fair share. We’ve had the greatest WR ever (arguably player) and two of the best QBs. We have the coach that basically changed the way the game was played.

MLB: Okay.
Prince Namor: It would be underwater, of course. And we would use oars instead of bats. And there wouldn’t be grass, just long, flowing strands of seaweed. Also, pods of dolphins would watch the game from the dugout, and they’d make horrific dolphin shrieking sounds while shining laser pointers in the eyes of opposing batters. Also, the game wouldn’t be determined by how many runs each team scores, but rather if it was the pitcher or hitter who could fit the most scallops in his mouth in the bloleventh inning. Also, there’s a bloleventh inning now.

It feels weird reading the postgame wraps on SI and ESPN, etc for the Niners/Giants.
They’re telling the game story with lines like “the Giants appeared on the verge of collapsing but their talent preservered”, or “the Giants proved their mental toughness” without really acknowledging the fact they assuredly lose that game without those Williams fumbles or the Giants fumble that wasn’t called- a 13 point swing at the low end.
I suppose I can see that the media has to write it that way, but there is a serious disconnect between the way I view that game in my head vs the way the game stories have been written.

I have to give him a lot of credit- some QBs get the yips (I think Rodgers did last week) after that or get a bad case of the Favre’s yet Eli just took it and took it in stride. God only knows what his body looks like right now

you could say that about the Saints against the Niners last week.
Ultimately this why I am not that upset. Niners got a lot of bounces this season. Just didn’t happen today.

Both those fumbles were due to the 49ers going after the ball though. Definitely Williams’ first one was due to him just being dumb.

I know but it was the result of injuries putting Williams in that position. I think Brooks Conrad is a very good analogy.

I thought the same about the NY Giants' last two games
They played well, but the other team also did a good job of handing it to them. Yet, the narrative was that they were on a dominant roll.

So I finished Mass Effect 2. I thought it was great and more fun to play than the first
I kinda missed the lengthy mission of say, Noveria, but I still enjoyed the hell out of it.
I also didn’t get the criticism of the final boss, it wasn’t like Saren was much better, and this one was FREAKY
the best part was that the way I played it, unless you were generic and cerberus
everyone got their time to shine in the end.
My favorite when Jack finally proved her worth despite reminding me way too much of my exgirlfriend.
What that the crazy tattooed chick would remind me of my exgf? OHHHHH
Yeah, I was aware of the death thing, so I did as much as I could before the endgame. Also all of the DLC, and everything.
I bought all of em
But because that was always the intent for me. Lair of the Shadow Broker’s a must. It’s fantastic.
Kasumi: Stolen Memory and Overlord were also really fun.
Found myself waiting for the arrival to be over even though it’s the one that leads into 3.
Same, that psycho chick (Jack? It’s been a long time since played) hated my guts though.

But it was fun to clear out the random planets with him and Grunt, just gunning down the poor scared little vorcha.
Kasumi was the better of the two DLC characters by far.
I usually ran with Garrus, Tali or Samara though. I wish Legion came sooner, loved him.
I think I just went around with Garrus and Miranda. Then again its been years. This was the last non sports game I played before Skyrim too /has a sad reflective moment.

I prefer doing a one handed backhand. Then again I picked up tennis so I could play with my wife and my instructor insisted that a two handed swing was “barbaric”

I had a one handed bh when I played in high school.
Then when I took it up again in my twenties, my wrist just wasn’t strong enough so I learned two handed. One hand has definite advantages, especially if you rush the net, but two is easier.

So Cain is staying?
And Lincecum wants crazy money?

Sounds about right. But they are probably both going to want crazy money

Cain and Lincecum will both be signed for reasonable deals by the Giants. Optimism! Hooray!
Don't think he can cut it in the bigs? Brock Bond will be the bigger man and walk walk walk away.
I’m in this line because I NEED GOOD NEWS!

Moar tennis talk
Of the next round matches Nadal – Berdych and Djokovic (because he is so going to make it through) – Ferrer might be the most entertaining.

Not sure which is more frightening...
Sharapova’s shrieks or this picture of Iveta Benesova…

I’d truly be frightened to play her. Or be her doubles partner.
Thank you Edgar Renteria, for hitting the ball three feet higher.
Murray had a pretty lucky draw against Kukushkin, who never looked right all game. He got to play and warm up without having to exert himself

That sounds like a lot of ink for your first tattoo
by WhatsAMataHari on Jan 23, 2012 12:01 AM PST up reply actions
it is alot of ink.
I was going to do it in stages, though. like an outline, then the inner lines, then shading. I have good pain tolerance, so I can probably handle 3 or 4 8 hour days of it. I just want to be sure that is what I want, yknow? Too many people with tats that want their skin back

Is it worth seeing the English version of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” if you’ve already seen the original?
Because I have a hard time imagining it being better. A very hard time.

Consensus for the reason on the 49ers loss?
The 1 for 13 on first downs(actually 0 for 12) was a huge reason for the loss, but they still would have won if not for the two Williams turnovers?

I’m going to say, probably would have won. Directly led to 10 NYG points.

yep. still led 14-10 and added a FG, Giants never scored in reg again. and the Giants didn’t look like they’d score in reg again, either. they never put together another drive from the 2nd QTR to the end
